MY SON IS A 2007 RHP. HE IS STILL 16. (17 BEFORE YEARS END). HE HAS GOT A FEW D1 OFFERS, ONE BEING JUST ABOUT A FULL RIDE BUT NOT TO ANY OF THE BIG BB SCHOOLS.HE TOPS OUT AT 90 AND I KNOW HE IS NOT ANYWHERE NEAR HIS POTENTIAL .A THOUGHT WOULD BE TO TRAIN FOR A YEAR TO MATURE A LITTLE MORE AND THEN GO TO SCHOOL.REMEMBER ITS JUST A THOUGHT.NEVER WOULD WANT TO SHORTCHANGE HIM. ANY ADVICE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Bryansdad,

Congrats to your son , and do not get to caught up in the level of D1 programs out there. At all levels at every level there are good and bad programs. The key is to find a home that your son feels comfortable with acedemically and athletically. Then which pitching coach (since he pitches) is going to provide the best knowledge available to him. If indeed he is looking to keep playing.

Wherever he lands, let the coaching staff determine if he is a redshirt guy(which is what you are basically talking about) If he is tapping 90, he needs to get to a school imo...
You see, you don't know when the growth will occur anyway, maybe a year, maybe 6 months.
Plus , a year away from school will only make it harder to go back.

Good luck this year, should be exciting for your family..

Bryan'sdad I think you ask a very good question but personally I think you’re being distracted. Baseball is a GAME. The whole purpose of baseball is playing the game. Sometime we get caught up in the preparation and forget the real purpose. Your assessment of your son and his untapped ability is just like my assessment of my son and probably most other parents here ---- but they don’t forgo the game and attempt to change baseball to an individual sport. What’s the drive to get better? The drive to get better is fueled by the fan's approval and the look given to you by your competitor. The game is the heart and soul of baseball and baseball is a team sport. You don’t judge yourself by looking in the mirror. Judge yourself by how you stack up against your competition.
You are like every other parent in that you want a good baseball program for your son. Where your son fits is very important but the way to find fit it to evaluate your son and seek out a college that will allow him to compete within that fit. Don’t get caught up in selecting a "stronger" college and then spend all your efforts attempting to modify your son to fit that college. If you do, he will eventually have to transfer to find a better fit.

Just my opinion
Fungo
I went back and read your last post in sept. At that time your son was getting a lot of attention but no offers.

Now you state he has offers one a full ride, but NOT to the bigger BB schools. Most parents here would have been thrilled if no interest in september and now offers. Why didn't he sign in the fall. Was it because the schools were not to your liking (or his) or just not the right fit. In fact in one post you are the dad, in another you are Bryan.

Fungo gives good advice, you don't give up the game to train in this sport, you play the game everyday to improve. Some people think that the opportunities get better, they keep looking but in some cases it may never come again.

Best of luck to you.
If he takes a year off, he'll almost certainly fall off of everyone's radar. That is definately not a good idea.

I wouldn't worry about the offers too much. Find a school that is a good fit for your son first and then see what the schools he finds can do for you. Being that young, he may want to find someplace closer to home and maybe redshirting for a year wouldn't be a terrible thing for him to adjust to college life, train, AND still be part of a team. What part of NY are in?
FIRST I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU TO ALL WHO TOOK THE TIME TO HELP.I WAS JUST LOOKING FOR SOME OUTSIDE OPINIONS.WE ARE VERY EXCITED AND GRATEFUL THAT HE EVEN GOT ONE OFFER.BELIEVE ME WE DO NOT TAKE THINGS FOR GRANTED.THE SCHOOL THAT HAS MADE THE BEST OFFER WOULD BE A NICE FIT FOR HIM AND THE STAFF HAS BEEN VERY RECEPTIVE. NOT GOING TO SCHOOL WAS JUST A THOUGT AND I JUST WANTED FEEDBACK.THERE IS ALOT OF KNOWLDEGE ON THIS SITE AND I AM JUST TRYING TO DO WHAT IS BEST FOR MY SON.NO MATTER WHAT SCHOOL HE GOES TO OUR FAMILY WILL ALL BE VERY PROUD OF HIM .ONCE AGAIN THANK YOU ALL AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS
Bryansdad - Thanks for coming and asking your question. It is a good one that I haven't seen before.

Fungo is our guru and he has given you very good advice. Read it and re-read it several times. There is much to be learned in his words that you may not pick up the first time through.

This is very important. I love the kid who can throw 90, but moves it around, keeps the hitter off-balance, toys with the hitter. You only see that in a game situation. That command and knowledge of how to pitch and that competitiveness can only be pulled out and become evident in a game.

Find a good place for your son to play baseball. Sit back and enjoy. Lots of fun times ahead for your son (and you Wink ).
