I want to provide the players and parents with a "good news" story and possibly help get some other player back on the baseball field. My son is the centerfielder for the University of Virginia, On March 2, 2004, he crashed into the centerfield fence at the University of Richmond going after a deeply hit ball. He sustained multiple injuries but the broken scaphoid bone in his wrist nearly ended his baseball career. After the first surgery with a screw inserted in the bone, it failed to heal. A real nightmare insued from there. Finally, an Othropaepic Surgeon at Yale Medical center in New Haven,CT successfully fixed the bone--a real miracle. Statistically speaking, there are probably ten to fifteen players reading this board that are suffering from this injury. Advice: contact Dr. Joseph Slade at Yale Medical Center (Google his name, and you will find his email and address--and his research and articles). Thanks to all the players and parents who prayed for Mike Mitchell and showed concern for him. He started in the outfield for UVA against UNC yesterday. I have never seen a prettier sight than that kid striking out swinging.

Mitch, my son, 16, also broke his scaphoid bone after being undercut in a basketball game. As you stated, that is a very small bone, and one that fairly often goes undiagnosed as being broken. The first x-rays RARELY show the fracture, but a subsequent MRI did show the fracture. This bone is in a very weird place and the blood flow is poor to aid healing. My son didn't require the surgery, but he did miss 8 weeks and fortunately showed a clean x-ray. He's showing no ill effects and I've hidden his basketball for the rest of baseball season.

Mitch, Kind of ironic that I found this thread and see that your son plays for U of Virginia. My son received an invitation to attend Coach O'Connor's HS Elite Prospect Camp on 6/24-6/28. Unfortunately my son has a conflict with his summer team but coach wrote and said that there will be other camps later in the summer. I would love for my son to attend, if possible, and see how a big time program operates.

My congratulations to your son on being a player at a top program and great academic university. You should be very proud. Have a great season.
