My son started having right big toe area pain 5 or 6 weeks ago, around the beginning of the HS season here.  He has apparently been working through some significant pain,  I caught him limping on his foot last week and to prevent something chronic down the road, we saw our Dr., who ordered an x-ray.  Based on that and his observations, he diagnosed sesamoiditis.  He is out for the remainder of the season, and we are hopeful that 3 weeks of complete rest will be enough for him to play pain-free this summer.  In addition to rest, we are doing 2 alleve twice daily, icing at least twice daily, and a metatarsal gel pad for the affected foot.  Looking for anyone else who has had this diagnosis and the timeframe for recovery.  Any helpful advice is very much appreciated!

My daughter was diagnosed with sesamoiditis. Took being in a boot for 3 weeks, a cast for six weeks, having a special metatarsal pad made for her, cut holes in the padding in her running shoes at the sesamoid bones, two doctors and 13 months and the pain was still there.  It wasn't sever pain but she didn't want to train make it worse and be out another 13 months.

I went on several running web sites and basically they suggested rest, but also said it was almost impossible to rest because it would require staying completely off the foot. They suggested doing ice dips. She did them before school and before bed for two weeks. After about 10 days the pain was gone and has not been back. I don't know if the ice dips cured it or it may have just been ready to heal, but I still tell her two doctors could not heal her in 13 months and I did it in two weeks.

Get a large pot fill with ice and water. Put his submerge his foot past the affected area for 30 seconds. Take out for 1 minute. Repeat 10 times.

Hope you son has better results!!!!

Well I can share my experience!

I started having severe pain in my ball joint of my foot and it was swollen! My dr thought I had gout, um I was like 28, female, etc, I didn't fit the profile. She wouldn't take an X-ray and said to take Motrin and rest!

6 weeks went by and it was still awful, sent me to a podiatrist and he shoots an X-ray and comes in laughing that my sesmoid is broken! He then proceeds to tell me that I am going to have a very hard time healing it as it doesn't get any blood supply.

So i was in a boot forever and I finally just decided to have surgery! It took years for it to fully recover from surgery.

I did remember that I stepped on my kids metal toy airplane and that's how I broke it!

Good luck!!!

Appreciate the honest feedback!  Based on your experiences, we have decided to amputate.

JK!!!   But in all honesty, really hoping my son's did not progress to the point it will require a year to recover...

Thanks for the well wishes, fingers crossed that he will be pain free for our opening summer game on June 2nd!
