Local8SS,

You're amazed that "The Incredible Shrinking Newspaper" didn't cover this?

You've got to be kidding!

Earlier this week they ran a series of defensive articles trying to put a spin on their declining circulation in the internet age. Then they indicated that they were responding to challenges by combining some sections, eliminating others.

In other words, they're responding to market rejection of their product by downgrading it still some more. Kind of like trying to save a shinking ship by boring more holes in the hull.

There's about 1 guy assigned to high school spring sports, and he gets pretty frazzled. One guy writes human interest stories on athletes and someone at the night desk receives and formats game reports for printing. That's the extent of the resources devoted to covering who knows how many HS boys' and girls' sports.

When we get to playoff time, they hire freelancers to cover things because they don't have the staff to do it themselves. Up until then, you can forget about any kind of actual news reporting where HS baseball is concerned.

It's pretty sad, really. Pretty much you have to go to Virginiapreps.com or digitalsports.com to get your HS sports news these days.
