I agree with CoachB's ideas too! I think anytime a moderator makes a decision to edit or delete something, they should make it known that they did it. No moderator should exercise some kind of random "clean up" button doing as she or he feels. That just contributes to bitter, negative, and perhaps a feeling of paranoia where none should exist. If I'm going to make a moderator decision, then I can stand behind why I chose to do what I did.
I also think we should respect Julie for the job she does and the moderators she chooses. Rather than be upset about one, send our concerns to Julie. Regardless of who sends you an inappropriate PM - moderator or poster - copy and send it to Julie. I'm sure she wants no one harassing or contributing to that kind of behavior. If moderators claim responsibility, then Julie can also see for herself if there is some sort of harassing pattern by a particular moderator.
I was reminded last night by a friend of the "ignor button". I haven't used it for anyone as I just choose to ignor on my own the posters that I find annoying or obnoxious in some way.
I've compared this place to real life before and I'll continue to do so. There's some folks you'd like for your neighbor and there are some (probably very few) that none of us would want to be around very long.
And Bobblehead - please refrain from use of "girl's club" or whatever. Just because you may have concerns with one or two of the moms, respect that we each have our individual thoughts and behaviors. We're each independent in how we think and act.

Yes. Unbeknownst to you I have been siphoning the ethanol laced gasoline from your tank for the past month and a half! My ol' Chrysler really loves it...
Of course everything I have illegally gained by siphoning your tank is gone after the long drive back to Chicago. But it is all worth the drive and the risk because I always stop at the Maid-Rite© up on 1st Ave. for one of their scrumptious loose meat sandwiches and a thick, creamy shake.

I would second Darrell's excellent idea of having moderators step aside from moderating posts they are participating in and ask for and respect outside opinion. I have seen some thin skin, which is fine from a poster, but not for a moderator.
Other than that, I'm not too worried about deleted or locked threads. They usually have personalities involved and drifted away from point. I've never said anything that important that it needs to be archived anyway.

I don't know CPLZ. I think this is definitely archival material...
Do you walk to work, or carry your lunch?

gotwood4sale,
Even if you are a moderator, I’m calling you on that one! That is pure BS! I've been told that Ethanol gives you worse mileage, so I don’t buy it!
Now your talking! I had two of those maid rites for lunch today. Next time stop in. We are located less than half a mile from that Maid Rite Shop!
You know... Siphoning gasoline might become real popular in the near future.
Off topic, but something I can't figure out... Why do some of those gas stations shut you off after $75 on the credit card? That seems kind of dumb if you ask me. Guess they don't want any more money than that?

first julie thank you so much for keeping this place going. it is a thankless job i'm sure. but again thank you.
i have been visiting this place for awhile.i came here to learn things that could help my kids, and because i love the game of baseball. i have learned a lot. i've tried to share things when i think i can be of help. touched on a topic or two that are best not talked about, at times. but i have learned a lot here. i read here everyday, now i'm learning things to help my friends kids. that is just as satisfying to me.
like pg i really don't see a problem. i even enjoy the occasional verbal battle's that go on. kind of like a train wreck........you just have to look. my coach told me this a long time ago. when i think of it, it works. maybe it will do some good here.
it's nice to be important.............but
it's more important to be nice.

Same experience.quote:I believe within my first few posts that I somehow ran afoul while trying to discuss a difference with an "Old-timer", I reacted and responded in a manner I, upon reflection, felt was too harsh and withdrew my offering...it was then made clear to me two things... First, I was being discussed by folks I didn't know and wasn't invited to present my side and secondly, it seemed that "Old-timers" were given a special defference...I'm not new to forums and it certainly made me step back and consider further contributions (Good/Bad? Ha! who knows...I've got a big mouth too). My decision to continue (My apologies to those who think it was the wrong decision ) was based on my desire to talk about the art..not my need to feel how good others feel about me.
Couple of things, I am sure some are awaiting a response here.
BHD,
Julie came here to ask us advice. Your posts in this thread show why things go sour, often. Instead of helping to solve a problem, you keep repeating the same things. You have a problem with me, take it to the headmaster. As far as mentioning "The Ladies", that's targeting a group in particular. There should be no direct comments made here as to who is a male, female. The reason it was mentioned by FBM (memeber of the Ladies Guild), is because that is what someone addressed the moms here once, and it wasn't right, those comments were intentioanlly made to begin a series of arguments and showed gender bias towards a group of individuals. That's trolling.
I wouldn't have brought it to your attention but you seem to not be staying with the topic here.
And FYI, if I get on your case, it's not because I am a moderator, but a poster here just like everyone else and that's me. You came here in a very negative mood the other day in a few other posts. So put it away before I really say what's on my mind.
I am a moderator, I've closed a few threads in maybe 4 years. If you have never gotten a pm from me that I deleted something, I didn't delete it. I also myself at times question why some posts are deleted and have had some that I have been in, which was not in an argument, just part of the conversation someone didn't like. I myself was upset at the time, but I do understand it is not an easy call. And as someone suggested, moderators are asked to send along anything that is deleted for review.
As far as whoever deleted all those posts the other day, whoever did it had a good reason and I am sure that it was forwarded to Julie. Why can't some of you let it go? I myself would have preferred it stay in place, so that others can see who said what and let them form their own opinions.
How about this one, Lord knows I have had several attacks over the years and lately, some really nasty stuff thrown at me, and not ONCE did I ever delete any of it but I could have. I recently closed a thread, only because the person posting really wasn't supposed to be here anyway, they came through the back door. The other one was someone having conversation with themselves. And once, just once I almost deleted a post where someone who posts here often was very nasty to another poster under disguise. I did send both a pm, the one in disguise and the one who was the target. That's just downright mean adult stuff. And I have no problem letting anyone know who that was. The one thing I can say about some people here, they'll tell it like it is, whether nice or mean, they don't hide behind another name.
Most of us are pretty intelligent here, even if we don't have all the baseball knowledge, it's pretty easy to figure out who has issues and who doesn't. In fact, it's very evident in this topic. Last week there was a post regarding people being able to read private messages, with the person who began it DEMANDING answers from me. I know that was on purpose to speculate that I have some priveledges which I don't. IMO, that post was meant to stir up trouble for the owner.
How about some comments regarding that?
As far as thinking this place is too strict, some of the sites I read, as mentioned before, you get one chance. Julie is pretty tolerant. Again posting is not a right, it's a priveledge.
BTW, if I have to mind my p's and q's because I am a moderator, take it away. Let those crying foul be the moderators.
Life is about choices, if you don't like it here, there are plenty of other sites available where you can participate.
However, I doubt many would last long.
I didn't post this to start an argument, but I haven't been whiney and feel that I DO have a right to defend myself as a webster and a moderator. And I feel that some here have been very unfair to the site owner, even after she has come asking for suggestions, something she really doesn't have to do, IMO.

The future is not only now, but the last month and a half as well!
Again PG the answer is yes. You've never noticed, but I've gotten quite good at hitting the kill switch on your pump just as it is rolling over to $74.99. There's a knack to it!
Actually I don't like having to shut you off PG, but with Big Oil holding a nozzle to my head I didn't have any choice. They don't want their tanks to pump dry before they boost the price a dime the next day!
Now back to the discussion in progress.

PG,
It's not the gas station cutting you off, it's your credit card company. For some reason they put a cap on gas purchases. I agree, it makes no sense to me either.

TPM my final words on this :
If I repeat myself it is because you aren't listening.
For example. You poked youre nose into a thread on "True cause of arm injury". It was aheated discussion but quite civil. You just had to chastize the posters. You didn't add your opinion. You just said something to the effect of another good thread ruind by a Marshallphile. That discussion went on civilly inspite of your remark. You also had to chastize me for asking yardbirds opinion about the video I posted and then dissagreeing with his comments. We had a civil discussion.
The reason I won't say anything more about this is because you don't get it. I think I once advised you to get a mirror and take a look at how you come accross. You scold posters and didn't contribute to the discussion.
You eem to not be able to see what you do. You try to impose your views on every poster. Why did you come into that thread just to make those inflamatory comments.
I will repeat t6hat I like coachb25s suggestions and that I have no problem with closing threads etc. Others do I don't. I would like to see all treated by the same standards. You included. I didn't think I had a big problem with the rest of the Guild. They may not like what I say buy I don't always expect them to.
So that whiney thing gives you the right to breach the board manners ? Now I got it.

I'm not sure about that because there has been places where I have gone over $75. If it were the credit card company why do they allow other purchases well over $75?
Bobblehead,
I've heard that term "Ladies Guild" used here before. The first time it was kind of funny. Some times things that are funny can get old real fast. It just seems like that term is always used in a disrespectful way when it is brought up on this site. Don't know if others feel that way or not.
PG I didn't bring that term into the discussion and as I said I have no problem with the other women who are part of the guild.

Credit Card Rule
Why doesn't Julie just give all of the moderators a month off and allow all of the people who are complaining to take over. That should solve the problem one way or another. The only problem is that the old moderators might never volunteer again after getting a month off. And no, I am not volunteering. No way would I want that job!!
Some of you have said you like blunt (me too), so I will be blunt.
1. Doesn't matter who introduced it into the conversation, the most common recent referral of the "ladies guild" by men on here is meant in a demeaning way. No need for that. Don't do it. I don't know about you guys, but I will give 90% of the credit for my son's return from his injury to my wife, his mother. He gets the tenacity from her and she has been his single biggest supporter and asset. A lot of the ladies on here remind me of her...smart, savvy, passionate, knowledgable, opinionated, sometimes pushy, compassionate, kind and sweet. Moms are just as capable of having valuable and strong opinions as any of us. Either don't read their posts if you can't handle a strong-willed woman or respond with respect.
2. Sometimes when things aren't going well for our sons in their baseball lives, we tend to lash out a little at a poster who strikes a sensitive chord. I've been there, done that...guilty as charged! Keep in mind that (virtually) no one on here is out to get your son...attack him...demean him...they probably aren't thinking of him at all when they talk about whatever issue. At least no one should. All of our sons' baseball careers will end someday. I am quite certain that it will be really tough. Walk away from this site for a month or two if you're feeling angry at the baseball world.
3. If someone doesn't agree with you or get your point, they are not a bad person. They just don't agree with you. Heck, my wife and kids (who are far better people than me!) disagree with me a fair amount...and they're usually more "right" than me. Walk away, don't attack back. Doesn't work in person and will never work on a message board.
4. Don't drink and post. Its obvious sometimes that some here do just that. I'm serious.

I am certainly not paranoid but do ask that everyone be treated fairly. That may be a tall order for the Girls Guild.
But, BHD, you have perpetuated the term and it does seem to be used in a pejorative manner. Female board members are no more homogeneous than male members.
If any poster is confused about whether a reference could find him labeled as a misogynist, just try replacing your female-related term with a word for any non-white-male group. If that phrase then sounds prejudiced or offensive, chances are your reference to women will as well. PC? Hardly. More like PR; Personal Respect.
I apologize for the diversion from the thread's intention.
From what I can see or guess, we have a small minority of posters who feel that there is a problem with the site's system of moderation, or with a single moderator. Most of us also realize that the administration of this site takes way too much time from Julie, and to a lesser extent, from moderators.
So to rectify moderating problems, let's put the burden of effort on those posters who find themselves offended.
Here's what I recommend: Whoever feels that their posting "rights" have been violated by a moderator should begin the practice of separately saving each of their posts. The poster could do a screen capture of each post just after they post it, or simply copy the body of the post into a text file just before they click the submit button. (I do this sometimes when my internet connection is flaky to lessen the risk of losing my nugget of wisdom.) Then, if a post or series of posts becomes edited or deleted, wait 24 hours to reduce emotion, judge whether the moderation was inappropriate, and if so, PM MN-Mom with the original posts. She can then decide if the moderation was suitable.
This might have the effect of increasing the load on MN-Mom, but I doubt it. First, I suspect that most of those complaining now won't take the trouble to document their own posts. Second, posters who have been subjected to moderation may view it differently after looking at their own post in isolation. Lastly, I'd suggest a "three strikes and you're out" approach: if a webster complains three time without ample justification, they're gone.....
Regarding the "Ladies Guild": I think this is a very unusual and special website, and it's my belief that a significant reason is the number of women who post here. The site takes on a broader point of view and perspective than if it were dominated by a single gender. So I very much appreciate, as a group, female posters. I sure don't see female posters as some monolithic body of opinion, but I do think that on average they have a different point of view than men. And the combined points of view and attitudes are part of what makes this site so special.

Ref "the Ladies' Guild" ... this term was used, in my opinion, as a direct snipe at the moms on the board who post on a regular basis and, in some cases, agree on a particular issue and voice their common opinion on that issue at the same time. It was generated by one particular 'old timer' and I doubt anyone could say that it was not intended as a slam. At the time, I tried to make light of it and told said 'old timer' that we preferred to be referred to as the "Women's Auxiliary" as the term Ladies' Guild prompted visions of little old ladies sitting around and doing little if anything to help the situation (or words to that effect ... please don't ask for the exact words as apparently I deleted my own post and can't find it when I search). Nevertheless, the same 'old timer' has elected to continue using the term to denigrate various posts by members of the distaff side of the HSBBW. No one will be able to convince me that it was ever intended to be more than a malicious jab at women, especially those who disagree with the 'old timer' in question.
I am going on record today and asking that the 'od timer' in question cease and desist using the term. Likewise, BobbleheadDoll, I would ask you to quit using the term as well because several of us find it very insulting, which we believe was the intent when the term surfaced.

I too know that "Ladies Guild" was intended as a malicious jab at the moms on the board.
As a member of the Boys Club I want to thank you guys for the gut splitting humor you are dishing up here this evening.

On behalf of the moms, thank you.
However, I am sure most will agree, much rather be a part of "The Ladies Guild" than "The OldF*rt F*rts Club" (non gender specific).

This topic has run its course imho.
The original topic was a red-herring created by one of the most divisive posters on our site. There are no cyber-laws being broken and there never will be. Frankly, topics are rarely closed and when they are, it is because they have run their course. Some like to argue and flex cyber-ego but that is not what we are about. Being nice is what we are about.
The reason we are the greatest baseball site on the planet is because we have equal participation between men and women. Ballplayers are who they are because of their Mom's and their Dad's. If we only had one gender commenting, then half of what makes our site great would be missing. Is that so hard to understand?
The original topic was a red-herring created by one of the most divisive posters on our site. There are no cyber-laws being broken and there never will be. Frankly, topics are rarely closed and when they are, it is because they have run their course. Some like to argue and flex cyber-ego but that is not what we are about. Being nice is what we are about.

Amen. It didn't take me long to notice nearly every scout team player and college teammate had both natural parents in tow, compared to about half of the high school freshman team. No accident both moms and dads were instumental in each player reaching their own potential, imo.
Would it be possible to add an ignore button? On some sites (Yahoo message boards) you can choose to ignore certain posters simply by hitting a button under their "name". There are some alpha-personalities here (as is true of all boards) who seem most interested in churning the water and creating dama, and I'd be pleased to have the option not to view any more of their posts. Ignorance is sometimes bliss, and being ignored over time (not being granted a forum) tends to weed folks out.
On another board I'm associated with, there is a rule that posters with more than one persona under the same IP will be automatically banned. This keeps trolls and self-bashing/flamming for drama at a minimum.
Julie, and everyone, thanks for keeping things afloat and positive. Really, the difficulties here are quite minor compared to some boards.

quillgirl ...
We do have the ability to place posters on an ignore list ... go to your "Personal Zone" by clicking on the "GO" button on the upper left part of the message board. There will be another menu, and one item is "Ignore List" where you can create your own list of posters whose 'advice' and comments you wish not to read.
I have never used it, but I do believe I am going to partake of the option starting today. It is getting old addressing certain subjects and persona who choose to never acknowledge that they are wrong or inciteful (not insightful).

I agree with CD, topic has run it's course, unless anyone has suggestions for moderating issues.
Enough has been said to get points across.

Here is my 2cents worth.
Make 2 columns for each thread:
1 column will be The Know It All's.
2nd colum will be The Newbies.
That way one can choose which one they want to visit depending on what kind of advise they want to receive.

You should apologize to the Ladies Guild and The Old F*rt(s) Club.
quote:However, I am sure most will agree, much rather be a part of "The Ladies Guild" than "The Old F*rt Club" (non gender specific).
I would much prefer being part of "The Old F*rt Club". Only because I am already a member of that club and being a member of "The Ladies Guild" would be hard to explain to my children.
Being a member of the "Old F*rt Club" means you can remember what happened when you were 8 years old just like it happened yesterday... But you haven't got a clue as to what actually did happen yesterday!
The most important attribute to being a member in good standing of "The Old F*rt Club is having forgotten most everything you have ever learned. I am a proud member!
It will be interesting to see who the moderator is that closes this thread.
Guess it is time to cut back on the caffeine intake
