one point,

I don't have a specific answer to your question, but I have an observation we made while my son was doing shot put as a Freshman.

My son is a pitcher. Track started before baseball so he was working on shot and discus. He was improving steadily, until baseball started. Once he started throwing the baseball, his distances fell off noticably. At that point my son said, since there is a negative corelation between throwing the baseball and throwing the shot put, and since I have no desire to be an olympic shot putter, and there might very well be a negative corelation between shot and pitching ... I don't want to take that risk. I'm done with shot put.

We have no idea whether one thing is related to the other, but I am very comfortable with his decision to not throw the shot anymore.
I have asked several track and baseball coaches this question over the last few months. I was trying to decide whether to let my son throw the shot and discus this spring like the track coaches at this school want him to do. The general consensus is that the shot put motion puts strain on the rotator cuff if done correctly. If done incorrectly, it can cause damage to the rotator cuff.
No shot or discus for my son.

Sluggo,
I threw the shot, discus and javelin in college. I cant imagine why a PROPERLY thrown shot put would cause rotator cuff issues. However, having coached small kids at the elementary level, I know that MOST are inclined to throw the shot. This happens when the shot is elevated above the shoulder and the shoulder is allowed to rotate externally then internally to accelerate the ball(shot). OUCH.
Dont do it if this is the technique used.

For my senior year of high school I did shot put before the baseball season started. It didn't have any impact on me during the spring or summer but during the fall I started to feel the impact. I ended up having a partial tear of my labrum and also an impingment. Talking to my doctor he is not sure if throwing shot caused it but for sure it did not help out at all. I now have to red shirt this year. Unless you have to, I would not throw shot
