I don't see a problem. If he is hurting then he should tell the coach. If he doesn't say anything to the coach then it is on him.

Just for the record, a few days ago my son threw about 85 pitches, then went out to play short. I was angry, according to my son his weakest position is shortstop and they keep putting him there

Made several putouts without an error. I don't think the four extra throws he made in the game did anything either way as far as his arm went and probably helped with the cooldown.
I think my son's HS coach does it right, My 2014 bats 4th, plays 3b and is #2 pitcher on team. He is, alos, only player on team that is considered a starting position player that pitches as well. He pitches once a week (usually Tuesday league game). our next game, either Wednesday or Thursday but never both, he dh's. He is considered a potential for either pitcher only (D1) or 2 way (d2, d3, etc.) I realize he will probably only be pitcher or position in college. so does his coach. I appreciate how they handle pitching.

I have learned (as an assist coach on his summer team) how to better handle pitching because of them. I do find it tougher in Summer ball, as you tend to have 4-5 games over a 3 day period
