My son had arthroscopic labrum surgery in late July of last year. He had a SLAP tear, which the doctor said was worse than it looked on the MRI. The doc fixed it and tightened "everything" up, and after the surgery said he felt it went well. It is now almost a year later and my son just threw in his first game 3 weeks ago. He has been long tossing (and long tossing...) and lifting and stretching. We consulted with many doctors, including Dr. Andrews who performed the same surgery on Shilling, and they all stressed how stretching is so critical to all pitchers, esp. after labrum surgery. I am not even addressing all the behind the scenes work and extra effort my son did to get ready to pitch again. I am thankful that his college coaches saw fit to not rush him and told him to treat his rehab the right way. I'm also glad to report that all during the rehab and his first 2 games he's been totally pain free. (his velocity is down but it is rapidly improving).

Based on my son's experience and timeframe, please make sure you're not attempting your comeback sooner than you should. I'm no doctor, so if your doc gave you clearance go for it. Just don't try to do too much too soon. As my son's pitching coach said, err on the side of caution.

For whatever it is worth, now that he's finally cleared to pitch, his first 5 outings were mapped out for him (1 - 1 to 2 innings, or 20-30 pitches; 2 - 2-3 inning, or 30-40 pitches; 3 - 4-5 innings, or 40-50 pitches, etc.)

Good luck to you!
