Anyone have any experience with having a shoulder tightened up, and what the realistic recovery time is?

We had a shoulder injury about the third week of football which was causing his left shoulder to roll out of socket out the back. We go for an MRI on Thursday, but Dr Meister said that the more than dozen times it popped out in games since then indicates that it will need to be tightened back up. Said a 6 month recovery time cry, but may be back swinging a bat after 3 months.

He is a RHP, so the option of playing this spring and summer and waiting to have it done after is there, or we could try and cram it in before baseball starts and have him miss the first several weeks. He will choose to sit out football before baseball, that is non negotiable for him, heck he may not ever play again. Especially after a particularly hard game with a top ranked team, where his shoulder came out multiple times but he kept on playing. Only to have the head coach get in his face and tell him to "drop his balls and man up....it doesn't hurt that bad". He knew the doc would sideline him and he made the choice to not go and continue to play and got that in return. I don't think the head coach will ever get our sons respect back after that rant.....big mistake.

Just thought I would see if anyone had experienced this type of injury/surgery before. We will know more after the MRI, but I think the writings on the wall.

Just an update....

We had the surgery a week ago Monday, he had a torn labrum in the front and the back of his left shoulder. It required 4 anchors to put it back together, so it was a substantial injury that was not going to be healed on its own. We were going to put it off until after summer baseball, but we had a couple of deal breakers. One of which being him getting in the cage to try out a new bat he got for Christmas. He couldn't even make it through one token worth of pitches! This was after some PT to help him build up some strength in that shoulder to bat. It just wasn't going to happen.

The main reason was the diagnostic MRI that maxed out our very high deductible! We just couldn't justify paying a deductible now and then turning around and doing it again in the summer. The kid wants something to drive this summer when he turns 16 and that wouldn't have happened, which made the decision a little easier on him.

So he heard the word that strikes fear and loathing in the heart of every HS athlete.........
Manager . No way around it, you can't try out for a brand new program, you don't deserve a spot on the roster. So as he is released by the doc he will be trying out, and hopefully he will be out on the field playing before the season is over. Summer is after the full recovery time, so we will be good to go on that scene.

Thanks a bunch for the feedback, I am not good at charting unknown waters, and I appreciate everyone who humors us newbie baseball parents!
