Looking for unput. My 2013 son is doing his 1st college camp and has signed up as RHP for his primary position. A friend who recently returned from similar camp said the pitchers had a great deal of down time in day 1, as they all did some one-on-one sessions (with just one person, not even a coach) ...lot of waiting and watching while the other pitchers had their sessions. But the position players, who listed their position as primary and pitching as secondary, got lots of time being seen in the field AND got to pitch in the 2nd day games regardless. Does anyone have any experience with these 2 day formats? My son is probably more attractive as a pitcher but is also effective in OF. Should he keep pitching as his primary? Can I call (or can he call) the assistant coach who is running the program and get his opinion?

Thanks-

As the father of a son who is currently a 2-way player at a D1 Mid major, you need to ask yourself some questions. How would he showcase as just an outfielder? Is he fast - eventually under 7.0 in the 60. Can he hit with power or will he project to where he can? How is his arm from the outfield? Or is he further along as a pitcher? You need to show his strong points. Also, each individual camp will run differently. If you have questions, inquire with the camp.
Thanks Birdman. Good point of view. Despite great tips above that indicate he might be better off not showing as a pitcher just yet, he ultimately decided to show as pitching primary, for the reasons you cited. He is 'further along' as a pitcher now, and he talked with the camp coordinator, who indicated that the 'pitching secondary' guys might only get bullpen and not real game innings to pitch. Because he is a smart pitcher, this is where he will (hopefully!) shine.

Yes he is also fast, v. good at stealing, and his arm from OF is great, his bat is solid but he is no Bryce Harper! They will see his potential in those areas I hope, but he feels pitching is his best spot to show right now.

I think given this camp format he made the right choice. And, he got on the phone with the coach to ask these things so he is learning early on that this is his process!

I appreciate all the opinions and points of view.
