Yesterday I was in a discussion w/Taratko regarding this subject. It seems that most people aren't aware of the tremendous oppurtunity to get to know coaches and programs through camps. The NCAA rules allow the recruiters free reign to discuss scholarships while you are on their campus. Having said that how many of you can point to a showcase that has resulted in a ship? This info is real important to all the high school players and Dads, so sound off please.

I would say that my sons national exposure came directly from playing on a competitive travel team, the Upper Deck Cougars; the fact that we went across the nation to play competitive tournaments; and, his appearances at national showcases, i.e., Team One; Perfect Game; Midwest Prospects; and, College Select. The exposure at these showcases, I would suggest, resulted in the number (s) of schools calling after July 1st.

He did not attend a single college camp and wasn't interested in attending any camps, although he was invited and did attend the Stanford All Star camp.

College camps are good, I agree, if that is the only college you are considering. I seriously doubt that there were many (if any) other college coaches at the FSU camp.

Camps are a great way to get your name out there and gain some exposure. Problem is, some of them cost $300-$600. A lot of kids cannot afford that, especially if they are a 2-day camp out of state. I agree that if a kid wants to go to a specific school, he should go to their camp. I read something on the NIU site where the coaches said they never heard about one of the kids until he went to their camp...and they signed him.
If there is a school that you really want to attend, going to their camp is by far the best way to spend your money. I attended Indiana State's camp over the summer because the school offered my major and had a good baseball program. In Nov. I signed with Indiana State because I attened the camp and they had 5 days to evaluate me. Without going to the camp I would not have had the same college opportunity. Showcases offer many benefits but if you want to catch the eye of a certain school, college camps are great.
