Mark Johnson Names Baseball Coaching Staff

Sam Houston State head baseball coach Mark Johnson has named his new staff of assistant coaches.

Jim Blair will be in charge of hitting and will be our recruiting coordinator. Justin Hill will have iprimary coaching responsibilities with the Bearkat pitchers. Phillip Miller will serve as volunteer coach.

"I am pleased and excited to announce these three fine young coaches as our baseball staff here at Sam Houston State," Johnson said. "All three are talented coaches and outstanding individuals as well."

Jim Blair joins the Bearkat baseball staff after serving four years as an assistant coach at the University of Texas-San Antonio where he worked as hitting, outfield, and third base coach.

Blair, who coached two NCAA Division I All-Americans in his tenure at UTSA, guided the Roadrunner hitters to a Southland Conference best 55 home runs in 2004. Under his guidance, Chris Lewis became the first Roadrunner to lead the SLC in home runs with 16. In 2005, UTSA hit a school record 30 triples to rank in the top 10 nationally.

Blair was a top hitter for the Baylor Bears, compiling a .335 career batting average as an outfielder with 54 stolen bases during his three seasons. He holds the Big 12 Conference record for longest hitting streak (31 games). After graduation, Blair signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers but his pro career was cut short by a shoulder injury. He spend the summer of 2001 as an assistant coach for the Harrisonburg Turks of the Valley League, helping the squad to a Southern Division Championship before joining the UTSA staff in 2002.

At Baylor, Blair earned a bachelor's degree in health and human performance in 2000. He and his wife Pamela Ann have a son, Carson, born in October, 2004.

"Jim Blair will be in charge of hitting and will be our recruiting coordinator," Johnson said. "We are excited about bringing a quality coach like Jim to the program. He is a graduate of Baylor where he was an outstanding player. For the past five years, he has been the assistant recruiting coordinator and hitting coach at Texas-San Antonio. He comes to us with very high recommendations not only for his coaching ability but for his character as well."

A former pitcher for the LSU Tigers who served last year as an assistant coach at his alma mater after serving two years on the staff at Northwestern State, Justin Hill joins the Bearkat staff as an assistant coach on Mark Johnson's staff.

While at LSU, Hill served as director of the Smoke Laval Tiger Baseball Camp. During his two years with the Demons, Hill helped lead Northwestern State to the 2005 Southland Conference regular-season title and an NCAA Regional berth. He also supervised the development of Rusty Jones, a 2005 all-Southland Conference outfielder. Hill received his Master's degree from Northwestern State in 2005.

A 2002 LSU graduate, Hill pitched for the Tigers in 2001 as part of legendary coach Skip Bertman's last team. He appeared in 19 games, tossing 19 innings while compiling a 1-1 record with two saves. Hill also had 27 strikeouts before a shoulder injury cut short his year.

Hill began his playing career at Mississippi Delta Community College before transferring to Bossier Parish ( La. ) Community College for his sophomore season. At BPCC, Hill recorded a 7-2 mark and a 3.74 ERA with 102 strikeouts in 77 innings (ranking fourth in the nation) and limited opponents to a .199 batting average. He was named an all-Region 23 and all-conference performer and was also a member of the Dean's List.

Hill began his coaching career in 2003 as an assistant at his high school alma mater, West Monroe , helping the Rebels to a district title.

"We're excited to have Justin Hill as our assistant coach with primary coaching responsibilities with our Bearkat pitchers," Johnson said. "Justin is a former pitcher at LSU. He worked with pitchers as an assistant coach at West Monroe High School and Northwestern State University, and assisted with the pitchers at LSU the past two years. He will be a tremendous asset to our staff and program."

Phillip Miller comes to Sam Houston State from Northwestern State where he served as the administrative assistant for Demon baseball.

Miller, who holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Northwestern State , played four years for the Demons, appearing in 65 games and earning 20 starts. During his career, Miller hit .240 including a .359 average his senior season.

A native of Clinton, La., Miller (23) graduated from University High School where he lettered in baseball, cross country and basketball.

He was a member of the state championship team in cross country as a freshman, sophomore and junior while his basketball teams won district championships his freshman and sophomore seasons. He helped his baseball teams to three district titles and a state runner-up finish.

Miller was a three-time All-State selection in cross country and three-time All-District in baseball. He also earned All-State in baseball as a senior.

"We were very fortunate to find a young man with Philip's background to become our volunteer coach," Johnson said. "Because of his talents, he will take on major responsibilities for us."
