LHP who pitched late into fall then shut down for 2 months.

Questions

1 - How does winter camps play into this if pitcher shuts down Nov / Dec?

2 - Hearing other programs having their pitchers throw 2x a week Nov / Dec.

What is the benefit / detriment to shutting down and define your pitchers shut down.

Thanks

It is a huge detriment for them not to allow their pitchers a recuperative break.

As to clinics...BOF is right, if the kid isn't prepared and in top form, he could injure himself going into the new year and season.

We traditionally hit the end of year camps so we generally planned accordingly for his shut down time (We did about 45 days typically active rest is what his coaches called it, they continued to condition but the throwing was on hold usually mid-Oct. through November then we ramped back up).
Related questions...
OK, so there is a fairly consistent recommendation that a player should shut down for roughly a few months (and I realize there is a camp that says "keep throwing"). What happens when the player transitions to college? Does this still apply?
It seems that these days, after the school season, a college has some sort of summer program affiliation that they would like their players to be involved in. Then they start up the fall program. They are off for a short period for Holidays before they start up immediately afterward. Can players afford to take a break then and lose ground on their arm shape going into the heat of pre-season practice? What is the norm? When do most college players take that break?
Are their different answers to these questions for PO's vs. position players?

Cabbage. I believe ASMI has guidelines based on age, as the overuse concerns are primarily for kids who are still developing physically. (not exclusively of course)

My son’s college team has the pitchers resting when they first get back to school, since as you say, many pitchers were pitching into August with their summer teams. They focus on strength and conditioning, and then start throwing in October for the fall practices later in Nov. I also think in the max fall the innings will be 3-4. After Thanksgiving they start a sand ball program that works on specific muscle in the throwing motion particularly on the decelerators. He actually won’t pick up a ball until he goes back in January, but his arm will be conditioned when he gets back.
