This Columbus Day weekend it is the Simeon High School Varsity Tournament at Washington Park. In todays games it was Joliet Catholic over Lane Tech 4-1. Whitney Young over Morgan Park 4-1 and Whitney Young over Joliet Catholic 1-0.

The Young versus Joliet Catholic game went down to the wire with the score tied at zeros with 2 out before the match up would be going to extra innings. The Young Shortstop Joe Frahm singled which was followed by the Young Center Fielder, Coleman driving in the winning run, lacing a shot over the shortstop into left field. Frahm scored the winning run as the Dolphins walked off the field with the win. Max Friedman was the winning pitcher allowing no hits (5-K's; 2 BB). There were several solid defensive plays by Young including a crisp 6-4-3 double play in the 4th Inning to end a Joliet scoring threat. Young scored 1 Run on 4 Hits and 1 Error.

Whitney Young plays Evanston High School tomorrow. The 8 best teams advance to the playoffs on Monday.

If you have more scores from this tournament post them.

As I understand it this tournament has been run by Simeon for several years and held over the Columbus Day weekend. This year there are 17 teams participating and 8 of the teams will advance to the playoffs tomorrow. This tournament allows the high school coaches to get an early look at their team to evaluate players and make some player decisions for the upcoming spring season. Accordingly all of the players are getting some time in and the more talented Sophomores who are being considered to move up, are being given a varsity shot by getting a chance to show their stuff.

The fields at Washington Park are in pretty good shape despite the rainy fall weather we have had. I believe that the Junior Varsity teams at both the University of Chicago Lab High School and Mount Carmel use these fields. According to the posted signage the fields are being improved by White Sox Charities; they need more improvements, but the four adjacent fields are all in pretty good shape and have the skyline of Chicago in the distance. The Washington Park area is booming and is in close proximity to the Museum of Science and Industry, the University of Chicago and the Lakefront. The park is currently being proposed to the World Olympic Committee organizers to be the focal point for the 2016 Olympics if the bid were to be awarded to the City of Chicago.

The fields are certainly not up to the high level that one finds at the outlying locations that the suburban teams play on, but all in all, better than many of the city fields that many high schools play on.

I have found that this tournament has been well organized with good competition and umpiring. While some of the teams may be missing a few of their two sport athletes who are playing football or s****r, this is a good fall baseball event which I have been impressed with.

The final eight teams advancing were Harlan Academy (3-0), Whitney Young (3-0), Joliet Catholic (2-1), Hyde Park (2-1), Von Stueben (2-1), Lane Tech (2-1), Clemente (2-1) and Lakeview (2-1).

Whitney Young was knocked out early in the quarterfinals losing to Von Stueben 8-2. Krenger was the winning pitcher.

Additional tournament results post them here.

Can someone fill me in on how this works as I didn't think it was legak according to ihsa rules that a high school coach could have his team playing together out of season while he coaches. I know some of the msl teams have games at rec park during the off season, but it is very loose and not coached by the high school coaches same at the fox valley network. This one sounds like the coaches from the high school are running the program. Did I miss something with what you are doing? I don't agree with many of the ihsa rules and regs and I wish we could play more organized in the fall.
