Last-game fight costs Coyote baseball squad
New Mexico JC to face same sanctions
The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Standards and Ethics Committee has imposed sanctions upon the Weatherford College and New Mexico Junior College baseball teams in response to an on-field fight at the Region V Tournament in Lubbock May 13.

Both teams will face the following sanctions:

*No player from either team will be permitted to receive NJCAA post-season honors in 2008.

*No player involved in the incident will be permitted to receive post-season recognition in 2009.

*Both baseball programs will be placed on NJCAA probation for the 2008-09 academic year, including a ban on post-season play for the spring 2009 season.

*The fall 2008 baseball season at both schools will be shortened--not beginning until September 2 and ending no later than October 15.

*The fall 2008 baseball season at both schools will be limited to no more than 12 games/scrimmages, with no players allowed to be involved in any region all-star competition. *The spring 2009 season for both teams will be shortened--the teams may begin practice on February 1 and begin competition no earlier than February 25. The teams will be limited to no more than 45 games.

*Each student-athlete involved in the incident that has NJCAA eligibility remaining will serve all the above-listed penalties in their next season of fall and spring baseball. Should an involved athlete transfer to another NJCAA member institution, he will serve the above penalty at that institution, including the ban on post-season play.

*The institutions must each institute a written program-wide sportsmanship and ethics policy for all athletes no later than August 1, 2008.

NJCAA officials in Colorado Springs notified the two schools of the sanctions May 29.

"This was an unfortunate incident for both teams, and we will accept the penalties imposed by the NJCAA Standards and Ethics Committee,” said Dr. Joe Birmingham, WC president.

I agree with all of those sanctions. I caught one night of games out in Lubbock this year, but was gone for the infamous brawl between NMJC and Weatherford.
The games I saw still made me think about discipline issues. I made a comment during that tournament that I wondered where the discipline that these players were hopefully taught in the HS ranks went. IMO, some of those players had zero discipline and a lack of respect for the game.... and the coaches didn't instill any either.
Hold on there Sandra Day O'connor. Before you pass judgement and make such a ridiculous statement about someone you obviously do not know, you should try and make sure you have your facts straight. I usually don't comment about ignorant posts of this type because I figure everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I'm a little closer to this one than most so....

My oldest son transfered to WC from NMJC and was blessed to have played for Jeff Lightfoot in the first season of the program. Coach Lightfoot is a man of honor and integrity and is the finest man and fairest coach my son ever suited up for from little league to pro ball. He most certainly does instill discipline in his players and he also demands that they respect the game and their opponents and that they represent Weatherford College and the city of Weatherford in the finest way. That being said, he also doesn't teach them to be a bunch of punks that are afraid to defend themselves if they are attacked. NMJC on the other hand has a reputation for being "thugish", undisciplined and out of control and that is the main reason we left. All that said, it was a very unfortunate incident for both programs, the players, coaches and fans. It happened in the heat of a battle between two teams that went to war in a game for their survival. I've spoken to Coach Lightfoot and he is sick about what happened. Knowing Coach Lightfoot like I do, I know that he will accept full responsiblity, and hold himself and his team accountable. I also know that he and his program will rise to the challenge and be even stronger on the other side. God willing, I hope my youngest son has the opportunity and ability to play for Coach Lightfoot when his time comes. If you are a dad(or mom)reading this post, and you have a son looking to play baseball in college, I recommend you go see for yourself what a fine man and a great coach they have at WC.

Also, if you are associated with the purple 4 year college to the east of there, I recommend you go see Jeff too. A coach with honor and integrity is not something you are too familiar with.
