Saw this happen in a HS game:

- R2

- Batter hits high fly to deep right - F9 chasing it.

- R2 hangs near 2nd waiting to see if it's caught.

- Speedy batter is now almost at 2nd.

- R2 at first thinks it's caught (it's not) and starts going back towards second to tag.

- Batter touches 2nd -- but retreats to first, because R2 is slow getting off second.

- Play ends up with runners at first and third.

Question: No error was charged, so does the batter get credited for a single or a double?

Although this was HS, OBR says it's the base he stops at.

He did end up at first, but initially he didn't stop at first base -- he continued directly on to second -- and touched it.

Where does it say in OBR that if you legally reach a base on a play, then retreat to the original base, you get to keep the furthest base you reached?

I think you’ll be able to see in the following comments, that its very possible for runner having acquired a base, to lose possession of it upon retreating to a previous base.

OBR
Rule 7.01 Comment: If a runner legally acquires title to a base, and the pitcher assumes his pitching position, the runner may not return to a previously occupied base.

Rule 7.08(i) Comment: If a runner touches an unoccupied base and then thinks the ball was caught or is decoyed into returning to the base he last touched, he may be put out running back to that base, but if he reaches the previously occupied base safely he cannot be put out while in contact with that base.
