18 yo, who's game is speed, jammed his thumb earlier this year that put him out for a while. This is one of a long line of nicks that he has gotten while stealing/baserunning. I've been promising to get him a some hand protection, and  all I've found that totally wrap the hand(he has also had his throwing hand and fingers stepped on) are products by Benik 1317  and  Pro 772 sliding mitt http://www.proorthopedic.com/pro772slidingmitt.aspx. Feedback appreciated if you have any experience with these, or any other like products. Kind of surprised that Evoshield or Under Armour has nothing like them.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd deal with jammed fingers, nicks, etc before I'd want to see my son wearing those ridiculous looking things on his hands lol     Baseball has been around for 100 years and players have gotten by.   I'm a Reds fan and I laugh every time I see Billy Hamilton on 1B with what looks to be...as you said....an oven mitt on his hand

Seriously though, I kind of agree....surprised that Evoshield doesn't have something that works the same but looks  little less like a kitchen item.   Good luck in the search

Well, if you're missing multiple games due to jammed/dislocated/sutured thumbs and fingers, and had sub par batting performances because you/your son can't grip the bat( catchers will know what i'm talking about)- it's all fun and games till a scout or RC comes to watch your games. A base stealer simply gets harder use on the basepaths than other players. Seems like common sense to avail oneself of whatever protection there is.

Ball players never used to use batting helmets, cups,  have concussion protocols, Black players...the good 'ol days were not always so good.

I disagree. We are not in the 1950s anymore. Mike trout last year broke his hand last year sliding head first and missed almost two months. That is a huge loss for his  team that costs millions of dollars.

Use every protection you can to avoid injuries, we are not in the tough it out era anymore.

My son is a base stealer whose game is built around speed. He runs gripping his batting gloves in his hands (to eliminate as you said, finger jams etc). He also flicks the gloves as a timing mechanism which sometimes distracts the pitcher on a pick-off. I'll probably see him tomorrow..I'll have to ask him about these new gloves/mitts.

If you are worth more than most corporations, slide feet first.

I can't believe I'm reading the cheapness of parents that pay $400 for a bbcore bat and $000's for Summer teams.

My son was provided an ovan mitt in college as a base stealing requirement. It sits in his back pocket at the plate to this day.

He's in his 2nd pro-season and swears by it.

Protect your sons hands and fingers properly. Don't be cheap!

So, the Pro Orthopedic is $60(has metal rods in it, I think).

Benik is $80.

Both companies have other  hand protection that is cheaper. I want the model that covers everything, and has no separate thumb, for obvious reasons. One visit to an ER costs a hell of a lot more than $80, and every player needs his throwing hand, let alone a pitcher.

Does your son use the Benik,  the Pro Orthopedic, or another brand?
