Hey Skip. In some ways its personal. I believe it takes a little longer for the catcher to get over the ball looking to fair territory. He has to come around and over the ball. Some catchers do that well. I like it when the catcher go's right over the ball facing foul territory, rakes in the ball then wheels and fires. He shouldn't be going too far up the line either.

I agree with Coachric here and that's how we teach it.

I would agree with Merc and Ric. There are very few catchers that have the footspeed and arm to face the infield, get around the ball, and not sail the ball into RF due to momentum pulling them away from 1b. It can be done, and I have seen 2 guys that mastered it, but I wouldn't teach it to any of my guys. Great question!

My college coach years ago told me "never throw against your body." We sprint, gather and spin. This allows our body to be in position to throw without any pressure on the arm or shoulder. We teach to pick the foot up quickly spin on that spot 90 degrees with the foot and throw. You don't have time to straighten up.

when i pick up that bunt i face foul territory and turn and throw. just a pivot for the throw.

Great time for a left handed throwing catcher.

Might be time to reconsider the anti-lefty bias.
