My name is Andy Barkett, and I am a manager in the Detroit Tigers organization. I have been a poster in this site in the past, and I have an important one today. So many of you in high school have already started dipping and chewing. I did, I started when I was 13. I was a part timer, vary rarely away from the field. But when I put the uniform on, a dip or a chew was soon to follow. Last Saturday, I had a piece of my cheek removed to be biopsied for cancer. I am only 33 years old, too young to have this disease. I hope all turns out negative, but in the meantime, gentlemen, throw your cans away, throw your pouches away. It causes cancer, I am scared to death. I wish I would have never touched the stuff. Please heed this warning. I never knew of anyone who ever had any issues from dipping, so I was never scared of any consequences. Now, I know someone. It is real. Throw it away.

Thank you all for the well wishes. I will find out the results in a couple of days and I will post them here or on my website. Fellas, I know you may like it and it may make you feel like a big leaguer, but it can kill you. It is not worth it. Coincidently, our clubhouse man put a case of Big League Chew Bubble Gum in our coaches office here in Lakeland on Monday morning. That brought back some great Khory League memories of carrying my gum pouch around thinking I was cool. Well, guess what, I have no problem carrying that Big League Chew around these days! Thank you again all of you for your prayers and well wishes.

It is called Chantix.

deldad - That is a very effective drug new on the market. I had shared it with one of our young poster's who wanted the information for his dad. It's for tobacco addictions... not just chewing. Important to follow the program that goes with the drug for best results.

Andy - You're in my thoughts and prayers. We'll all be hoping that you get negative results on your biopsy... do let us know.

Thank you for warning the members of this website. I'm sure it is not easy to write about. I am going to copy this thread and send it to my son.....

My 8th grade daughter is leaving early this morning with most of her 8th grade class (close to 175 students) for the PRIDE convention in Charleston, West Virginia. PRIDE is a drug, alcohol, and tobacco prevention organization in many of the junior high and middle schools. They talk alot about the dangers of smoking and drugs....but because of our involvement with baseball, she brings a different twist on these topics--she speaks about "dipping" and steroids....

I will make sure that she knows about you, Andy, and others like you. And I know that she will share your story with everyone she can to alert them to the dangers of smokeless tobacco, including how addictive it is.

And we will tuck you into our prayers.................

Bubandbran,....
Thank you for your post.
Bottom line,..this is an issue I see too often on a daily basis. We live on a military post. Many young ( and old!) soldiers chew and its a habit I am not afraid to call them on.
I will share your writings with the young ones I know and I send you my prayers and best wishes.
Thank you for being upfront and willing to share your story.

I wish you the very very best!!
