Well that's an interesting question!!

Esentially turf is made the same as the carpet in your home. You have layers of fabric backing which are run through a big sewing machine and turf fiber is punched through then the whole back of the carpet is covered with a urethane like tar to lock the turf fiber into the backing and make the carpet thicker. The turf is layed out in panels and sewn together on site using a mobile sewing machine on a cart. Then the rubber and sand is blended and groomed in and you get your final product. Becasue we are the second largest turf company not the biggest we have to offer a lot more in terms of the product. Our turf systems typically have alot more turf fiber in it and twice the amount of fabric backing. We have a 4 layer backing for example including a thick fiberglass layer designed to protect against the extreme freeze thaw we have here in lovely Chicago. The other guy only has a two layer backing. We have about 30% more grass fiber in our systems than the other guy (which translates to almost 6 tons of extra green). Our belief is that the carpet must be built as beefy as possible for long term durability while the other guy believes it's more about the sand rubber infill and their name recognition. Both are excellent proven systems. We offer alot more carpet for the money and at more competitive price. I think because we put so much more turf fiber in our carpets that you will get much truer hops and movement on the ball. We have a corney name for it called our equal fiber matrix but essentially it means because we have so much grass fiber we can space each tuft of grass evenly and tightly at 3/8" so the hop, footing and movement are the same in any direction where as the other guy has a much more sparcely populated carpet and has wider uneven gaps between columns of turf fiber which resembles corn rows.
Going to Florida to play HS Baseball.....wow. And a CPL School at that. Too bad not many other kids get that opportunity. What a priviledged group of kids that is. With the resources that school seems to have (cream of the crop students and athletes to go along with an apparently full treasure chest) they should be excellent at whatever they do.

My question is do the "ordinary" CPL Baseball Teams get to go to Florida?
This may be a different conversation if it were about football but ...

If a CPS school has players willing to raise the $$ -- they can go on a spring trip.

The problem is that not many schools have players, let alone players that are willing to raise money.

The other snag is that the team should probably be able to compete once they get to FL (or anywhere else).

In terms of financing - Whitney Young probably has players that are more willing/able than the average CPS student and you only need to read through this thread to see that "they" feel they can compete. Their alumni support is probably a little better than most other CPS schools, too.
Haha! now let's hope he can get an internet connection so we can enjoy the play by play! Roll Eyes

This going south for early spring baseball seems to be the thing to do lately - a few schools in our conference are doing the same. Some to southern IL, a few farther - Kentucky, Tennessee or Florida. I don't know - I've done more than my fair share of fundraising, but I'd have to be darn sure the team had every other single thing they needed before I'd want to pay for what is essentially a spring break vacay for my kid. I guess for me, one of the best things about high school baseball is finally getting a break from the travel ball expenses. If you could get somewhere warm and play 10-12 games it might be worth it, but it seems they play more like 3. So is it baseball, or is it vacation? Some coaches seem to promote the team bonding aspect - seems like you can get pretty close to your teammates while you all huddle in the dugout in the freezing cold!

I don't know - that's just my opinion. Heck, if they have the money and want to spend it that way, more power to them. For our team, I'd suggest we hire a pitching coach and a batting coach instead 'cuz we need that a whole lot more than a trip to Florida!
.

It's better this way sulltiger...it really is.

If you had gone down there to Orlando having already played many, many games and having won almost all of them the locals would likely have noticed your swagger. They would have absolutely let loose on you and your team sulltiger.

It wouldn't have been pretty...it would have been doggone ugly actually.

Look at the locals letting loose: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wePMYM4av6Q

We received 10 inches and I know you guys south got hammered even harder than we did. In all of my days that was the longest I've ever seen it rain at that frequency.
