I'm not sure what HS teams you've seen practice or where your son plays, but my son has been through 2 head coaches at his school and both have made it a point to have all levels see practice on the field. And pitcher bullpens have been set, maybe not hand holding while they do it, they've been assigned. And never seen a coach limit how far kids throw for long toss; besides that's more of an individual thing anyway that should be done outside of "team" practice. And I have to completely disagree with the idea of summer coaches doing all of the development. My experience is a vast majority of summer coaches do little more than set the lineup and give signs from third base. All in all, I think your insight is tainted from a bad program.

My son's summer team has a set routine for the pitchers including bull-pens and games, yet seen school teams that can't figure that out. Summer teams have kids long toss and strengthen their arms, yet see HS teams that kids aren't allowed to throw farther than 90-120. It looks more and more like the school coaches are expecting the summer teams to actually coach and develop the players. Seeing this as the rule, not the exception. Again, like the kids were saying this weekend, how serious can they take school ball?

It would be great if you would go ahead and name these programs you have experienced this with. Seems like your painting with a broad brush with no accountability based on anonymity of the internet.

Specifics would be great, although I'm sure you won't do that. Just keep bashing anonymously.

The varsity is from a 5A school that has made the playoffs each of the last 4 years and gone a couple rounds a deep...The kids that talked this summer were from 4 5A programs, 2 4A programs and 1 3A program and 1 2A program.

Why would I call out specific coaches or programs? Why do something that could harm my kid or be held against my kid? Why make life more difficult on the coaches? This is a discussion board and for the vast majority it done with broad brushes, so I am doing the same.

Depends on the age of your son but you may want to transfer away from that program. I know several HS coaches and some with four teams. I find it hard to beleive that the coaches spend as much time as they do practicing with three and four teams during the week. Oh and then they spend another hour doing field prep and maybe another 30 minutes talking to a parent who thinks they don't do enough for their son. Meanwhile their family is at home wondering when dad is going to come home and spend time with them. Select ball is great and needed but your select coach will not spend as much time developing your son as a GOOD hs coach will.
Select ball or HS ball.... doesn't matter.
You will still get the "have's" and the "have not's" of baseball. Think about it.

How many select teams have popped up within the past 5 years? There is one on every corner, more tournaments, more promises of college coach's attention, etc... More money to be made.
You will still have some great select programs, and you will still have some great HS programs.
Same goes for the select programs that aren't so great, and the HS programs that aren't so great.
They will still be there too.

Agree!

However after the district opener last night I was reminded that there are are a few things that you can enjoy with high school ball that you don't always get with select summer ball:

1. National anthem - always good to see young men standing on the line with their caps off and respecting old glory!
2. Lights, scorebaord and cool evenings!
3. Stands full with more then just family!
4. Announcer and good tunes playing, especially "Sweet Caroline".
5. Fully functional concession stand
6. School pride!!
7. Seeing friend that you haven't seen since summer ball ended!
