My earlier thread got me wondering, cause I'm not hearing too many folks saying they've started. Are we the earlybirds??

For us it's 1 week of "tryout" workouts in the fall.
Official practice start January 31
First game allowed February 21

This is actually later than we used to start.
When my oldest was a Freshman, 1st day of practice was always Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday in January, and 1st allowed game was the Monday before Presidents day. For that first practice day, coach (at that time) would have them show up about 10pm Sunday night (no school on Monday) for pizza and cards, then at 12:01 am the lights would come on and they would start working till about 3:00 am, then crash in the building for a few hours, then breakfast, then back at it about 8:00 am. They usually finished about 6:00 pm Monday night in time for dinner.

Waukesha, Wisconsin

1st day of practice - May 13th
1st game- May 21st
Regionals start July 15th
State Tournament July 27th

arghhhhh! To make it better, we take the unofficial varsity to Tennessee for a tournament over spring break. Our team also plays in a unofficial Spring league and the players with aspirations beyond HS play in either the PG League in Iowa or here in Wisconsin as well. Well worn path from Wisconsin to Cedar Rapids....!
CrusaderDad Thanks, I'll pass along to Bret. Same to Corey. Wisconsin HS baseball is played after school is out. PM me and let me know what ya'all are doing this Fall. Regarding our schedule, our seniors actually graduate long before their senior baseball season is over! We lose a lot of ballplayers because they want to work a summer before college. But we have nice weather by then usually.

Halfmoon is also half right! In Wisconsin the HS schedule is split into 2 seasons Spring for the Northern part of the state and Summer for some Southern parts of state. Makes a lot of since doesn't it. He gave you the summer dates. Spring dates are -
1st practice March 21
1st Game April 1
Regionals May 31-June 3
Sectionals June 7
State Tourney June 14-16
Legion/Travel Teams June 10 if not in State Tour.
We start the 28th of Feb. We will have 3 days of tryouts. As of now, we are scheduled to go after school if it isn't raining outside or snow and if it is, we go at 5:30- 9:00. After our 3 days, we will make a cut and then await our basketball players. After all of them have had a fair tryout, we will make a second cut. We play March 25th for our first game. We play our first conference game April 4th. I love my kids and can't wait for this year to start. This will be a very exciting year for us and when it is over, it will signal an end to an era. More on that someday.

1st official practice - Feb 14th
1st 'unofficial' game versus another HS - Feb 26 (if the fields dry out)
1st 'real' non-league game - March 4th
1st league game - March 18th
Last regular season game - May 12th

Most of the better ball players have been playing all fall and winter with travel teams, scout teams, etc.

No structured 'tryouts'. Kids that want to come out for baseball typically participate in the summer program as incoming freshmen or get 6th period PE for baseball in the fall. Generally few kids are cut based purely on atheletic ability ... academics or other personal issues, sure. The less-skilled players may not ever see much game time, particularly once league play begins, but they get to participate in the program. Most of the time the kids that aren't very good baseball players may be good at some other sport, e.g., football, etc., so they just gravitate away on their own to something else, or they just accept that they are there to participate in a structured program and may never win a starting position.

My son's Freshman year, there were 20+ kids on the Frosh/Soph team (all Frosh). Now as a Junior, there's only 11 left still playing ball.

Right you are again Halfmoon!Nothing like 2 -50ish coaches bantering about there speeds. It is now officially timed with a calender.I don't mind losing a race to you halfmoon but could you at least pick up the speed on getting your wallet out of those deep pockets when it come time to pick up the check at the restaurant/bar. For those of you who don't know halfmoon and I coach together and our sons played on the same fall team last year. Looking forward to road-trip to Cooperstown this year together- might just have a little fun heh coach?Good luck on your trip to Tennessee with HS team. Might be able to go this year if you need me.Stay in touch

That's the same way it is with our program. The coaches never have to actually "cut" anyone. The ones that want to be there work hard and do what needs to be done. The one's that don't, they basically cut themselves.

We have lost a couple of very talented players (and at least one very dedicated parent) that way, but the program doesn't need them if they won't follow the rules.

During our allowed fall "tryouts" we usually have about 40 freshman, by January, that number is down to about 20, by season's end that number is down to about 16 and sophomore year, it's down to about 10. The largest senior group we've had in the program in the last 5 years is 7.
Being in the CIF-Southern Section, our first scrimmage is scheduled for Saturday Feb 26th. Then next saturday we have our Alumni game, and Tuesday March 8th is our first game. Good luck to everyone this coming season! RHP05Parent please tell E to have a great season, and we will be routing for him loudly down here south of SLO!
Our first game (non-conference, they are 5A, we 4A), was an away game, scheduled for last night....was called off due to poor field conditions. Their AD called and said, because of the rains we've had....their field was not fit to play on. This didn't sit well with our players....because we've had a couple of days of sun...and our field is fine. Unfortunately it didn't end there....one of their players called one of ours at practice....said they had really re-scheduled the game because they knew we were not ready to play them....little bit of trash talk went on.... So.... when our practice ended, 9 of our players got into uniform, and headed over to their field....to play ball...on their tennis courts if necessary. When they got there...the school's JV and Varsity teams were having a scrimmage game on the unplayable field. Things went downhill from there.....not a very good way to start our season. The game has been re-scheduled to this coming Monday....someone suggested we ask for a forfeit...but our kids said no....they really, really want to play this game.
CADad,

Foothill is playing in the Newport Elks tournament next week. We'll be facing some very tough competition in our bracket in some highly ranked teams ... Esperanza, Valencia, Mater Dei, Tesoro, Capo Valley, among others. It's going to be a real test for the boys coming off of last year when we had seniors Phil Hughes (.69 ERA - 1st rnd Yankees) and Cole St. Clair (1.16 ERA - Rice) as our two studs on the mound.

Our main returning starting pitchers are all juniors that threw relief last year behind Hughes and St. Clair ... my son's one of them. All have done well pitching against quality hitters at the state and national level with their club team, but they definitely have some big shoes, expectations, and a lot more innings to fill this year on the HS team. Because of the long shadow cast by Hughes and St. Claire, I think a lot of local folks ... other coaches, local news rankings, local scouts that don't know these boys first hand, aren't too sure what we're going to show up with.

Out of respect for the players and coaches, I don't want to speculate about who can do what or who will play what positions. I frankly don't know, and I consider it off limits to ask Smile. As a team they have to prove themselves on the field. Last year, Hughes and St. Claire combined to only allow 18 ERs in 134 innings ... we didn't need much offense to win games. That's a tough mark to match for any pitching staff. I think this year our starting pitchers are each capable of throwing some quality games and keeping ERs reasonably low ... all three can throw mid-80s+ stuff with movement and Boxberger can touch 90. But to win consistently, as a team they will need to step up their hitting from last year ... and they do have some guys that can get it done.

Grateful....we are on a 2 day school holiday..."Rodeo Days" in Tucson. Our team, mostly all geographical transplants who wouldn't know how to sit a horse if a game depended on it....are skipping the calf roping and bull riding...to spend the long weekend getting "not" ready for Monday's game....at the gym and at the field...everyday.....Think Monday night's outing will be good!
pbsteele,
Our HS will be playing in the SoCal Showdown. Schools from our league include Moorpark, Westlake, Agoura and Calabasas. Other schools in the tournament include Chatsworth, Hart, Crespi and El Camino among others. Our team was pretty strong during 2003 summer ball and it carried over into the 2004 HS season. They were middle of the pack in 2004 summer ball so I don't know how strong the team will be this season. They've got a couple fairly solid pitchers coming back and one kid who has made some big improvements after playing JV last year. The tournament should be a pretty good indicator of where they stand.
