I just received a copy of a brochure from a Division I school entitled "Guide to NCAA Rules for Alumni, Faculty, Staff and Friends"

I am sure each insitution will interpret the rules differently

The one I have refers to those individuals who regularly attend the universities events on a regular basis --they are friends

I would suggest you get the brochure from your institution ASAP and read it over and over---every time I read the one I have I find something new to think about and I have been reading it for 5 days now. As a parent of a player you become a "friend"--DUH !!!!!

Typical NCAA stuff but the wrong interpretation can have a large fall out if some one wants to press the issue

Interesting stuff

TR,
When my son was in HS a former trainer who came to all of the games was an alumni from Clemson.
He was not allowed to speak to son about the program until after he signed.
I had spoken to the NCAA, who informed me that prospects are not allowed to be CONTACTED for recruiting purposes by anyone who is an alumni, staff other than coaches and boosters (anyone who gives to the athletic department). I have never heard of the term "friends" or parents of players included in this group.
Anyone who is a staff member, alumni, booster is prohibited from talking to a player who is being actively recruited by a school. Parents of players who are alumni, staff or boosters have to be careful not to jeopardize a recruits eligibility.
In other words if you went to XYZ U, you technically cannot speak directly to a recruit, if I gave to the booster club I cannot speak directly to a recruit. Parents of players who donate to the booster club are not exempt, you have to be careful.
However, if you have had to read it over 5 times, it's probably just as confusing now as it was back then!

By the way went to the NCAA site and I see NJ will be the first to begin steroid testing.

OK, so the Mets clinched the title, can they at least let the Marlins win the next 2?
