Friend's son is playing in the PG Fall National Championship Upperclass in Arizona this weekend. It's a Fri-Monday tournament.

Their team is 5-0, made it to the semi-finals today. They, as a team, decided to leave last night rather than miss (another) day of school today because there were so few college coaches in attendance and they expected even fewer today.

Observed the following from the daily leaders from the tournament:

Friday:

Top FB thrown 91, 12 pitchers of the 148 who threw had a ball recorded at 86 or higher, average FB velo was 78 MPH, only 1 arm 90+

Saturday:

Top FB thrown 92, 36 pitchers of the 271 who threw had a ball recorded at 86 or higher, average FB velo was 83 MPH, 4 guys threw 90+

Sunday:

Top FB thrown 91, 20 pitchers of the 186 who threw had a ball recorded at 86 or higher, average FB velo was 77 MPH, 4 guys at 90+

I think you have to know what your goal is when attending. Maybe it’s film, stats, making a top velo, pop time list, etc.  A lot of pitchers take Fall off, so if you aren’t a 90+ guy, it’s a good opportunity to stand out, make a list, get a shoutout on Twitter, or an uncommitted spotlight.  If it to be seen by a ton of coaches, it probably isn’t going to happen at a random showcase or tournament. This is all I will say, we went to one PG showcase last fall and one PBR.  I saw a few smaller school coaches at PG.  At PBR I saw two bigger team coaches, but one left right before my son’s game.  That said, we got film and he made the top list is several categories at both.  When we went, he was talking to zero coaches.  One coach called our club coach while he was sitting in front of me and asked son to call on drive home. Seven months later, after talking monthly, they offered.  Son was also contacted by 7 other coaches during the fall and started regular phone conversations.  They did t see him play in the fall and they weren’t at the showcases.  It all came from emailing film, stats, and one coach saying he had heard his name a few times when talking to other coaches and wanted to get on his radar.  PG/PBR isn’t your sole recruiting tool, but you can certainly use them as a recruiting tool. I honestly never signed my son up to be seen by coaches.  It’s to see where he stands against his peers.  If you are spending a ton of money to go to PG things to be seen on site by a coach, I just think that’s the wrong approach.  It has already been talked about extensively regarding the events that are highly scouted.

I was in AZ as well. Lots of late bloomer pitchers there to prep for AZ Fall Classic and give first looks to Power 5 scouts that can afford to come watch. Oregon, Cal, UCI, UCLA, Utah and few others walking around. I must say, this was the first PG tournament in four years since my son started high school where I felt that it was NOT worth the money. The disparity of the teams (not in a good way) to the less than stellar umpiring made for a very long tournament in 109 degrees. My son went just to get some reps after taking the last month off and had 10 plate appearances, 6 walks, 1 HBP, 1 K  and finally managing a couple of hits.

From what I understand, the Wilson Premier tournament is becoming a go to now during this time of year. Let me know how that one is. Graduation is around the corner so I don't think I will be making that one!

Just came back from the Wilson Premier Classic (held in Florida this year).  Very good competition (only about 15-20 teams), but not many scouts walking around, especially those from the West coast were particularly absent.  Last year when it was held in Arizona, there were more scouts present, particularly from West coast schools, but not as many scouts as seen at the Arizona Fall Classic.
