Sonoma State is D II and is generally well regarded and very competitive. I am not sure if they "give out" any money. Most of the players are transfers from D1 schools and junior colleges as only 10 of the 37 listed on their 05 roster came directly from HS. Its not a school where you can just show up and make the team. Four players on the 04 team were drafted. Their field is nice.
Sonoma State University does have scholarships, One of the best DII programs in the country, In one of the best DII conferences in the country, nice school 45 minutes north of San Francisco in the wine country, Have heard great things about the coaches, very competitive to make the team but do look at walk ons - one from our high school made it last year, great weather.

Hello;

In 1977, I coached the baseball team at Sonoma State University when the SF Chronicle called the school the "frisbee" college. Many changes has occurred and now there are three times the applicants for entry into this school.

Thanks to the efforts of John Goelz, Head Coach, this school has now obtained successful academic and athletic status.

Now ranked #1 in the Division 2. The current team is very strong and plays this week in the West Coast regional.

I live 10 minutes from the school and have donated batting cages for the program, I enjoy watching the games and visiting with my friends, the pro scouts.

My son, Robert and I are working on a Fall program for the team using the SSK wood bats.

Re: USC Upstate

Head Coach Matt Fincher is a good guy. My son has attended several of his pitching camps and I have been impressed with his knowledge of pitching. Long time assistant Tom Fleenor recently left to head the USC Sumter program. New assistant is Russell Triplett who played and served as an assistant at Clemson.

VERY nice field and stadium that is only 3 or 4 years old. Upstate has had a very successful D2 program for a number of years. They move to D1 beginning next season. I can't recall what conference they will be in, but it should be on their website. My guess is they will end up with mid week games against USC, Clemson, and the local mid majors like Winthrop, Coastal, and College of Charleston.

They definitely have scholarships, but I am not sure how many. I THINK they are fully funded or close to it. Most of their recruits tend to be straight out of high school. However, they do take a few transfers from local JUCO powerhouse Spartanburg Methodist College.

The school itself has a good reputation academically. I know a number of professors there and they are top notch. The school has also undergone a lot of growth recently, with more on the horizon. New buildings, new roads, new athletic facilities, etc.

It will take time, but I believe that because of its size, location, coaching staff, and facilities USC Upstate will build a solid D1 program very quickly.
