Our son had his first Varsity baseball outing today, after being called up from JV. We played a double header and he started the second game. The first inning he did great, 2 K's and a little popout. The second inning the defense made 5 errors behind him after he got two K's and one walk. The other team scored 5 runs. He went back in for the 3rd inning, got a K, they made 2 more errors, he gave up a hit and then the coach took him out because his pitch count was high. We were really proud of the way he held his composure during all the errors and just continued to pitch. The errors were easy ground balls that should have been outs. The Varsity coach had been concerned about his ability to handle the pressure, and maybe all those errors were a blessing in that he showed him that he was able to handle the pressure today. Whew....I hope the next outing goes a bit better!

I had my first outing today. Started the game for Varsity. Three innnings and 47 pitches. They got two hits and on a play at home the ball bounced and hit the kids bat which allowed them to score. So final stats: 3IP 3Ks 1BB 2H 1 ER. Hopefully I can get some more Ks now that I know that my curveball is a better out pitch than my change.
Though the team didn't help him any, he did exactly what he was supposed to do. Threw strikes, got a few K's, and inticed the hitters to put the ball in play where his defense could do their job. I'd give him a "10" for his outing. As long as he understands that he did his job, he should be very pleased with his outing.

Cubanlefty, way to go! Now that the first outing is out of the way, I'm sure you will continue to do good.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. I think this was a good character building exercise for him. He kept his head up, and cheered on his team after he was taken out of the game. Now if only Mom and Dad had as much composure as he had during all of this...LOL...Poor Dad had to walk away after the first couple of errors. I was chained to the snack hut so there was no hiding for me!
Ohbaseball24 - Sounds like he held his head high. Good Luck.

My son went through this all last year while he pitched on JV to build arm strength after elbow problem.

In the car after one particular game last year, it was real quiet. I told him they called these games character builders. He said " Dad, I have about all the character I need, I could use a little luck". Then he smile at me. I knew then he would get through the year.
Congrats to all of you that have "stepped up" to play varsity.

Don't worry about the varsity "error-syndrome"...Very common in high schools.

Lots of teams are successful because other teams "choke" and don't make the simple play.

A college roommate of mine was a high school coach and he always played to "put the ball in play" and had the "anything can happen when you ask a high school infielder to field a ball and then throw it successfully 100 plus feet" coaching attitude.

As a pitcher...assume that it is part of the game. You are not penalized in your performance when a groundball is misplayed by a second baseman who has to field it cleanly and throw the ball 40 feet!

Go get 'em!

Ohbaseballs24 - Welcome to HS baseball! Big Grin Congrats to your son for hanging in there. Sounds like he is and will be just fine.

We "hid" through one of those innings sophomore year for our son. Shouldn't be any problem at all in the long run - actually seems like your son is a pretty mature young man. Good luck the rest of the way.

LOL..one of the errors was an easy ground ball that was mishandled by the second baseman who then accidentally kicked the ball another 5 feet away from himself...He made up for it by going 2 for 3 in hitting...

Never! LOL....it was just one of those Murphy's laws kind of days....anything that could go wrong did go wrong for two innings....No one appreciates a good fielder more than a pitcher I think...and his parents!
Hey I understand the "no hostility" thing but, if the college/ pro scouts don't care about the "official" stats, I don't think they'll care about dad's stats either!

I guess it would've sounded better if I written "SHADUP you knuckle head" . (trying to sound like Moe talking to Currley)

IMHO the kid should find out about how many K's and how many walks from the coach, and only after the game.

Guys...

I'm not here to fight with anyone...and I don't mind kidding around, as long as its all in fun, and if you have a difference of opinion, find, I have no problem with that, but I'm not taking anymore trash from anyone here. You wanna to have a discussion about the differences in pitching, coaching philosophies I'm more than willing to go for it.

But you want to start slinging BS...get ready to duck!!!

Hey, read rule #4.

I've filtered through your long-winded posts for awhile and I try an see things from as many perspectives (I want my spellcheck back!) as I can, and try not to say too much negitive stuff....but geeze, lighten up for gawd sakes!

Geez back to you...

I don't know whether we have ever had the pleasure of ever speaking before. Curley and Mo never taught me how to pitch, though you imply keeping stats is the equivalent.

I use stats with my son now, he expects it from me and we go over them...not the raw data...that's meaningless, but all the various percentages which reflect even down to your pitch selection in given situations... you really need to lighten up.

Get back to you later ...got to go do something.

back...

as i was saying, stats, are meaningless unless they are used for a specific purpose. You're right they have nothing to do with how well one practices or plays and they shouldn't. But they can be used to help someone understand the why things are happening they way they are.

Go to This website

http://www.netshrine.com/statglossary.html

then tell me whether all of these calculations are meaningless to baseball...

we do all the pitching calculations and go over them in relationships to tendencies. I even keep his tendencies where he hits the ball with in a number of categories. You will be surprised at the picture you get after coming to an understanding of how to use them.

Now I know it kind of nerdy but once you get it all organized on the computer it is real easy to update it and print our the new variances showing the movement in the trend lines.

tjro... I just saw that you (or someone else) removed the redneck thing at the end of one of your posts ... why? Didn't offend me.

Oh, and by the way, I wasn't trying to insinuate that Moe taught you how to pitch, just trying to show some inflection in my typing language. I'm that way when you talk to me in person, I try an add some humor to the conversation.
