85-90 since 12U?!?! Do you think you might be exaggerating a bit?
Seed Hitter is exagerating, & will resemble Pinnochio before too long! Wink

There are a handful of seniors (as of last day of school this year) at 90+, but I haven't seen any sophomores (incoming juniors).
Everyone in the world would have heard of them by now!

DBat has 2, Blackhawks have 2, that are known to PG. There may be a couple more in N. Texas area, and a couple "on the brink"...
It's not all about velocity, anyway...
Can the kid hit his spots?...keep his head about him?... stay focused?...get out of a jam?...dominate?...deception?, throw strikes, last without tiring, etc, etc, etc....

I was a competive sailor (J-24's, Flying Dutchman, Ericson's)...I could pull on the sheets hard (a rope), or adjust the tiller (syncronized with sheets) but...I would have to be able to read the wind (invisible), how it "plays"on the water (direction & gusts-lulls) & be able to make the neccessary adjustments to gain or maintain boat speed, shift weight for heel, avoid another boat or obstruction, etc.

Lots more to pitching than throwing a ball.

1) There are lots of kids that just finished their sophomore year throwing mid eighties in my area.

2) The ones that just throw mid eighties watch the ball fly out of the park at an even greater rate of speed. It gets ugly - often. Especially when the hitters are using the bionic aluminum clubs.

3) The ones that throw in the mid 80's at that age - hit their spots - mix in off speed changes and curves and pitch smart are much more impressive than the kids that just chuck up fast meatballs.

There's NO WAY that there's a 12 year old throwing 85-90. I would bet it's physically impossible as far as biomechanics are concerned. Some of the best 12's from around the world come together each year in the LLWS. The fastest I've seen there is low 70's from 46 ft. (At which point the announcer informs us that a pitch coming in at 72 is the reaction time equivalent of a 90+ mph pitch at 60.5 ft. lol)

No need to hammer anyone here. He has suffered enough already. Look throwing 86 as a soph is really good. There are alot of sophs that can do it but it still is really good. We had a Freshman this year that cruised at 83-84 and max was around 85-86. We had two sophs that were 85-86. We have also seen years when we didnt have one guy in the mid 80's period. I had a Freshman throw 88 one year and 82 as a Soph. You just never know what kids are going to do from year to year. How hard are they going to work? Are they going to stay healthy? Have they peaked? Are they full grown as a 15 year old? ETC ETC. We had a soph that threw 80 tops and was drafted as a senior by Atlanta throwing 92 93 cruising at 88-89. Just because you are exceptional for your age as a soph does not mean you will be for a Junior or Senior. And just because your average as a Soph does not mean you will still be average as a Senior. Time will tell - work ethic - genetics - the good lord etc etc.
Well said Coach May!

I applaud the kid for promoting himself especially if he is the main force behind it. It shows he has some marketing savvy that will be an asset regardless of how hard he throws.

I would have rather he be a little more upfront with his initial introduction and perhaps next time he will.

Go Huskers!
there is a 6'4 Sophmore kid in Texas(Rogers) at a 2A we faced several times last year as a freshman..We were both in the top 5 ...He was consistently 84-85 and topped out at 88 on our jugs.. The kid could locate and drop a nasty duece on you as well. He also had a decent change..I took a job at a 4a this year. Not a good idea to stay in his region or district..7 others on that team were sophs.. the kid will be a possible high pick some day.
