The more I'm reading it seems that attending these showcases/tryouts would be better to attend in either junior or senior year. Am I understanding this correctly? We live in a very rural town and the sports program isn't something that will ever gain any attention. That's the main reason why we're making sure to do our part since his goal is to play college ball.

I have not been down this road yet but it is coming soon. However I would suggest that your son select a school that he would like to attend regardless of baseball. Go to that school's baseball camp first. That would be a good start. This is a money business and there are those that will tell you what you want to hear. Good luck
I am no expert but...

We had a Seattle scout here at the MCYSA Summer International Championships (SIC) for 15U. On his last day he indicated that there were now 4 or 5 players that were on their radar for the future. I would say choose wisely but that it now appears that it might never be too early.

MCYSA will hopefully be working with MLB and colleges in the future to develop the MCYSA SIC as a showcase event.
"It's one of the finest international events I've seen in my 16 years on the job." Ted Heid, Seattle Mariners, Coordinator of Special Projects International. Quoted Northwest Herald regarding 20th Annual MCYSA 15U Summer International Championships held in Crystal Lake, Illinois.

2013 dates: July 26 to August 4. Seven game guarantee, no time limits, maximum of 48 teams.
I agree with the others here. Sophmore year is not too early. We had a Freshman catcher move up to Varsity at the end of last season. He played Summer showcase ball and is already on the radar of some D1 coaches. It definitely wouldn't hurt to get some showcase experience and he can see how he matches up against others who are aiming towards playing college ball.
