Will scouts really look at a sophomores? My understanding is that will only happen if they are a real stud, like a Bryce Harper, or if a pitcher can throw in the high 80's. In our area there are some soph's in Rockwall/Heath and a pitcher in Rowlett that may gain some scout attention that have really proven that they have the right stuff.
This might open up a can of worms, but come on, most kids are not going to get really looked at until they are juniors. Or am I wrong? Thoughts anyone.

I can tell you that at a tournament in Lake Charles, LA this summer the Buzz Lightning had a lefty throwing 86-87 that is going to be a sophomore. There were about 6 scouts that could not wait to get down to the field after the game.

I think you are right though, the majority will get looked at as juniors.

Good luck to all!

When I asked him why his response was "he is only a sophomore, we will see what happens when he gets a girlfriend."

Wow... So True
Scouts will definitely look at younger kids. Many high school sophomores are already being recruited by colleges, several have even given verbals. Professional scouts may see a young kid at a tryout camp, showcase etc... Performance doesn't matter. Remember that latin players are signed at 16 years old, so scouts can evaluate players of that age with no problem.
I attended a local (Richmond, VA) playoff game a few years ago and was very impressed by the pitcher for the visitor's. I was even more impressed when I found out he was a sophomore. There were several scouts in attendance to see the home team's senior pitcher.

I was kind of milling around after the game (home team won) and a few of the scouts wanted to talk to the visitor's coach. There was some exchange of info, then I heard one of the scouts say "take care of that arm, he's going to be a good one".

Now the extent of "really looking" at him may have just been putting him on their follow list, but they definitely took note of his talent. Some of you Rangers fans may recognize the kid's name....Neil Ramirez, 2007 pick in the sandwich round, 44th overall.
