Couldn't believe the score...21-0 at the end of 2 and the regulars were still in the game. One guy batted 7 times in the game.

What kind of coach does that to another team? With this debacle, I've lost all respect for the South Carolina head coach!

In my opinion, they should fire the pitching coach for CS because only 2 guys were hbp in the game.

Advice to CS coach today...Coach...get the kids on the bus and go home...forfeit score is only 2-0. What did you learn from the 38-0 blowout?

While the score was certainly excessive, I'm not sure that you could characterize those players as "regulars" after only one previous game this season. You are right though, it got out of hand in a hurry. I'm not sure what the thinking was but Coach Tanner is not known for being unsportsmanlike. Coach Tanner is a very well respected and successful SEC coach. The Gamecocks hit 7 HR's with 5 different players. It seems the whole team was crushing the ball, so who knows...

Beenthere, I respect your opinion, but if you think the players are going to quit hitting then you are not thinking straight. If you think that was bad, why not have the CS coach forfeit and go home. If the game is being played, the team deserves to play the game to the max. You sound like a loser that wants to keep the game close so you might have a chance to win. Many coaches in the early part of the season plan on their pitchers getting some innings in to see how they are throwing. I see notheing wrong with the kid in at inning 4.

Final Series stats:

The Gamecocks registered 52 hits for a .419 composite batting average for the series. Fifteen South Carolina batters had at least one hit each in the series and they used 18 position players and 10 pitchers.

In the three game series the Gamecocks fanned 47 while walking seven. Gamecock pitchers allowed 12 hits and two earned runs and an opponent batting average of .132.

You should give the coach the benefit of the doubt on what his intent is at this point. The outcome was known by all, the opponents humiliation is not the fault of SC. The players had earned the right to play a minimum number of innings before being pulled. I don't think it had anything to do with "scoring another touchdown". Not sure what really happened Yesterday. Sometimes it is good to get it all out in one game. Friday pitchers duel 3-2, Today 1-0 into the 8th SC put 2 more on the 2nd pitcher. Sat CS had a thirdbaseman pithcing in the 2nd inning which looked like take one for the team and tomorrow is another day.

Not making excuses for either side....It is baseball and sometimes STUFF happens! Let's face it CS is not suppose to be in the class of the GAMECOCKS but 2 of the 3 they could have just as easily won.

The score was outrageous, but today, Miami put 19 up on the board on FLA. Yes for all you mathmaticians that is only 1/2 but FLA is a rated team. So it just happens.

I'd like to believe it was just a case of not enough pichting on one day vs a dream day for the hitters.

That is simply a shallow use of statistics to justify the run-up. I am not a complete moron. LOL

Lets talk about starters staying in the game after the third touchdown. Use those stats.

Heres what happened: A low ranked team came in and gave USC a game the day before (3-2).

An embarassment. So - Coach had to show them.

My only question is - why stop at 38. He should have left his starters in, went for 100 and had his guys steal home in the 8th inning too as icing on the cake.

Hmm....should they have a mercy rule? Well, they do play 7 inning doubleheaders at times....why not? I don't belive it would be bad for the game to call it after 3 TD's.

Tanner is a fine young man and Coach. Never known him to allow something like this to happen. Cetainly don't know all the facts except what has been posted in here....but there does not need to be any game played where the final score is 38-0....Now if they can just teach the Football team at USC to put up those kind of numbers
Who tells their kids to stop playing the game? Yes it is BUSH to steal with a huge lead, or talk continuous trash when a team is getting pummeled. But is any more sportsman-like to have your players bat opposite handed or not run to the base hard or try to stretch a triple out of a double when you have been constantly drilling into their heads to play hard no matter what the score is and be fundamental? Baseball is a team game but it is one on one when you are in the box against the pitcher. i would never tell my guys to start goofing off. More players get hurt playing around than playing the game. An excellent indicator if SC was being out of line is how many players were HBP or ejected. I say take your @$$ whupping and get ready to play again tomorrow. But by all means put it in the memory bank for future opportunities against the winning team.
Lets see now--it is the beginning of the season--- perhaps the coach wanted to see this kid who batted 7 times because maybe he was not the starting second sacker--- early on in the season coaches are still feeling their way in many instances--looking for that starting lineup for conference play

Apparently this was the only game of the weekend that got out of hand so that tells me something right there

Its hard to reach any conclusions unless you were actually there. And I was not so all I can go on is the fact that Coach Tanner is a well respected coach and has never been accused of running up scores in the past. 38-0 says more about the quality of the opponent than the quality of the team that scored the 38. Maybe they should be carefull about who they schedule in the future. Do you actually think that the game would have been competitive if the bench had been emptied in the third inning. Lets see it would have been 27 - 0. Do you think the guys on the bench at USC are a bunch of scrubs? If you dont want to get embarrassed then dont play the big boys if you cant hang. I schedule the toughest non conference schedule I can every year. Sometimes we win sometimes we lose. And every once in a while we get hammered. I dont whine about the other team running up the score if it happens. I would be more offended if a coach took it easy on me. Beat the he** out of me if you can because I sure as heck am going to try to do the same thing to you. I would never intentionally run the score up on anyone. But sometimes you get on a roll against an inferior opponent and it just gets out of hand. What are you supposed to do tell your guys to quit? Coach Tanner is a quality coach and a quality person. I would be willing to bet that it just got out of hand and the opponent was just way inferior.

Haven't heard anyone from CS complaining about running it up. It happened. Last year CS Played USC 3X, won one, lost 2 late after being up by 3 or 4 runs. This year 3-2, and 3-0 Sandwiched the football game. CS generally plays a pretty tough schedule overall.
I am sure Coach Murphy or Coach Tanner were not happy with that outcome but it happened. They will both move on to the next series.

USC's bench probably could start at many of the other schools around the country too, so taking out the starters is not necesarily the answer either. CS has several very good players, but several vs 25-35 is quite a big difference. I would think most kids want to go to USC or Clemson (the big Elite State schools in the state) so the fact that they are rated in the top 10 and actually struggled in 2 or the 3 games, may still say more about the CS program being better than you think.

38-0 is one game (a bad one but ONE GAME!!!!)
There are still about 54 more games left.

Let's see what happens over the long run.
Early on, a lot of smaller schools who are trying to develop their programs attempt to schedule games against the perenial nation powers, knowing the game MAY be a blow-out.

I believe they do this to make their schedule look more attractive to potential recruits.

Charleston Southern is a small liberal arts University with a total of 2800 students. I think USC has that many try out for football.

CS got their games against the big boys and played them tight 2 out of 3 games. They're probably satisfied. I don't think we need to comment on Coach Tanner's actions. We weren't there and we don't know what issues he's trying to resolve on this year's team before getting into SEC action.
So many of you are missing my main point.

One player, a starter, had 7 at bats in the game. The score was 21-0 in the second inning. What was the point of this kid batting 7 times in a game? He was only drilled once. I would have drilled him every time he came up after the score was 21-0.

I just hope that one day someone gets an opportunity to do the same to SC and then BURIES 'em!

Enough said about any coach's coaching "style". Has nothing to do with style...it is called "no class".

I can't judge USC's coach's thoughts or reasoning, but I recall years ago our high school team was beating a team pretty decent, my son came up with the bases loaded, and struck out with 3 ugly swings. When I asked him later what that was all about, he grinned and said the head coach, coaching third base, formed a "K" with his fingers (telling him to strike out).

Pretty classy move by the coach. Maybe USC's coach isn't as creative with his fingers.....
Well, both sides of the issue can be seen here but TRhit seems to have the right track. You don't tell the bench players to slow down or the starters not to do everything within their power not to lose their starting role. It doesn't matter what the score was!! There are some teams that no matter what you do, you can't give the other team enough lead to make it a close game. Beenthere, you may be right about the class situation, but you never know what the coach was thinking!! The starter that had 7 ABs could have been the worse batter that the coach could have put up against these pitchers. Hitters that hit for power are usually struggling against slower pitchers. Just a thought!! You really don't know who would have been coming into the lineup, could have been someone that would have made the score, 78 to 0, who knows!

By the way, this French signature line is just that, a signature line, not meant to be personal in anyway to anyone!! It basically says "I wish I knew as much as you think you know"!! A statement that my father used on me often!!

Coach Tanner was wrong. Left his starters in too long.
3 hitter - Pearce DH, inserted at 3b about 7 inning 7AB
4 hitter - Powell (all american) moved from catcher to 1b about 6th inning. 6AB
5 hitter - Melillo replaced in 6th 5AB
6 hitter - Winn replaced in 6th 5AB
7 hitter - Campbell move LF to CF 7AB
8 hitter - Greg CF replaced in 6th 5AB

The mistake...Coach Tanner only carries about 18 position players. He must have been worried about what would happen if CS came back to tie it up. He would need these extra's for situational hitting...ya know right vs lefty!!!

It will come back to haunt him somewhere down the road...

I went to their site...

Powell, their All American was still playing in the 6th inning;

The kid that had 7 at bats, hit a grand slam in the 7th inning...and he played the entire game;

Another kid hit for the cycle in a meaningless game...I'll bet he's really proud!

The school set records for hits and largest margin of victory.

I just hope that someone gets a chance to bury SC this year and does it the same way!!

I don't know that Beenthere is so wrong about this. I remember a time when my son's team beat another team 42 to 0 and I gotta tell ya...I was a little embarrassed leaving the park that day. I'm not so sure the SC game would have been a matter of encouraging the players to "quit" as some have suggested. If the starters were still in there in the late innings then I'd have to question the motive for that.

Just some observations that I think need to be noted:

1. These are not young 8 year olds that need to have daddy protect them!! They are young men, some old enough to be drinking at the local pub, others certainly old enough to be picking up a rifle and standing abreast!!

2. I have never known any good player that made excuses when their team got blown away, it is usually done by less than average player or a parent on the blown away team!!

3. Coaches that spank other teams such as this usually have it thrown up in their face at some time during the season, "what goes, around comes around".

4. Everyone has a right to an opinion!

5. This topic is one that is usually divided along the lines of "fair play", "Class", the left, vs the right, conservative vs liberal, it has less to do about baseball and more to do about political views and where people stand in regards to earning vs giving!!

Forgive me for saying so, but that sounds like more of a "judgement" and less of an "opinion" on your part. But, I could be wrong...in which case I know I can count on you and Chill to defend me if I am indeed wrong.

Maybe the SC coach could have used this as an opportunity to work on his small ball. If he had I doubt SC would have scored 38. I have coached teams that have won by 25 runs and it was all we could do to keep it that close so I know this things can sometimes get out of hand. But with that said it is your opponents job to keep the score down so if anyone is to blame it is the coach and players of the losing team.

It is an interesting discussion.

Given the following:
1) The Charleston Southern coaches attend many of the baseball camps at USC.
2) The two coaches in question know each other well and respect each other.
3) Charleston Southern beat USC last season and just finished playing a tight game the day before.

The question is: How do you show the other team your respect for them in a blow-out situation. Do you want to "call-off" the dogs or is that a worse insult to a friend and a fierce competitor?

CSU has a strong pitching staff for a small (abeit, very small) university. It's shown by the 3-2 and 3-0 loss to one of the best teams in the SEC. The 2nd game was an aberation and I would bet that USC's coach struggled over how to approach it during the game and still show his "friendly rival" that he respects him AND his program.

Guys ... my point is this. We just don't know enough. We may not like what we see in the box scores, but we don't have enough knowledge to form a true opinion.

Does the importance of the all-mighty RPI rankings force the necessity of pursuing blow-outs in order to increase your post-season opportunities? Is this game a result more of the ratings system used in college baseball?

I dunno .... just threw some ideas out that were in my head.

They played 22 players! Maybe he didn't have anyone else. But, if he did so what. You talk about hitting the kid. Now that is BUSH! People can get hurt big time by you thinking it is alright to peg a hitter. Someday hitters are going to figure out that the bat can slip out of their hands and end up in the pitchers ear. Now won't that be fun to watch. Noone wins when you talk about pegging hitters. Get a life. The game is over and it is only one loss for CS in a 55 game season....

A number of people have spoken about this game, none of whom were there. I was there, and I can tell you what happened. CSU got absolutely hammered. SC did not steal or bunt, etc. They just crushed the baseball. It was one of those nights (although I've never seen a night quite like it). I know that CSU was embarrassed by the blowout, but I also know that they were not whining about SC "running up the score." They took it, and they bounced back and played a highly competitive game the next day.

But I do think there was a tragedy and a lack of class shown by SC, not because of the score, but because of the playing conditions. The game was played after a 5 and a half hour rain delay. The outfield was absolutely drenched, and there were 4 or 5 spots of standing water out there. The CSU CF (their best position player by far) hurt his ankle going after a routine flyball when he fell in one of the lagoons in the OF. The fact that this game (and the next one) were played given the condition of the field is the tragedy here.

Coach Tanner showed no class and no concern for the well-being of the players on either side in allowing the game to be started in those conditions, and the umpires should be ashamed of themselves for allowing it to happen. Players were slipping and falling all night, both sides are extremely fortunate that no one was seriously injured.

Shame on Coach Tanner for playing those games. But, I guess the all-powerful SC needs all the wins they can get, regardless who gets hurt.
sen...If you are player who is batting for the 7th time in a game that is in the 7th inning with the score 33-0,and you've hit a grand slam the last time up...YOU ARE GOING DOWN.

...AND THE NEXT PITCH WILL BE THROWN AT THE GUY SITTING IN THE DUGOUT WHO SENT YOU UP TO THE PLATE TO BAT.

Bat pitchers, bat left, do anything....But you don't embarrass a kid or a team!!!!

How about instead of drilling anybody you learn how to pitch to them? You've seen somebody 5 times in two innings and you still pitch so he can hit? Walk him, pitch around, do something! There is no way you can condone intentionally hitting anybody simply because they are better than you at the time! Like they say in baseball: Suck it up.
Beenthere, I just think that it is very classless of you to bash USC like you are. You continually bash Tanner like you know him. If you do know him, I don't believe that he would appreciate how you are talking to him, and if you knew him, i believe you would eat your words. As I said in another thread, you cannot tell your players to stop hitting and scoring. Spare me!

At that place and at that time, based on what I've read about the situation, he should have called off the dogs in the 2nd inning!

Years ago, Tony Delgado, currently the coach at St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois, and a little league teammate of mine in the 1950's, played a team and pounded them 75-2 or 78-2. I picked up the phone and called him and asked about what happened. Found out the other team was using girls and starting their program and he only had 11 players travel to the game. He offered to stop at 25-2 but the coach insisted in playing the rest of the game.

I'm not bashing the coach for all time...As I've said, in this one game and in this one situation, in my opinion, it was wrong to let a kid get 7 at bats with the 7th being when the team was ahead 33-0!

Man, if you are a coach and you don't think that there is anything wrong with that, then there is nothing I can say.

Beenthere, you should have "been there" at the game, or at least have some basic knowledge about S. Carolina, Charleston Southern, and the respective coaching staffs before you sail off on tangents about throwing at batters, throwing at coaches, and coaches being classless.

Coach Tanner and Coach Murphy are excellent friends. Tanner has even made it a point in the past to play an extra game on an open date away... at Chas. Southern... so that the Buccaneers could make some extra money. The games between these two teams are usually very tight... the Fri. and Sun. scores were 3-2 and 3-0. The Bucs have hung a loss on the Gamecocks more than once in the past. The Sat. score was an aberration.

As for replacing players when the score got out of hand, it's again obvious that you're clueless when it comes to knowledge of the Gamecock program. For starters, Carolina has several injured players right now, which limits their options at some positions. Who do you propose putting in the game at an earlier time? Fans? Neighbors down the street? You start yanking players out in the 2nd inning and have replacements get injured in cold, wet weather, you don't have any more options. I won't even go into the fact that half of the team is new, and needs to play to mesh with the returners.

Carolina's coaching staff tried to hold runners as much as possible to keep the score down. The bottom line is, in this game, the hitters flat out crushed the ball. The pitchers that Chas. Southern threw weren't "tomato cans", in fact, the starter beat Carolina last year. It just wasn't their day. noidea

I realize that everyone is entitled to their opinion.... but there is a difference in an educated opinion and a misinformed opinion. Yours falls under the misinformed category. That's not entirely surprising, as you seem to have grown more pompous and bombastic in the last couple of years.

Comparing this thrashing to one where a little league team with girls on it to a team would be totally un-appreciated by CSU and I am certain of that.
These are grown men on scholarship so they are better than your average players. It happens. I watched a program on the 1980 Hockey team yesterday, I bet the Soviets felt like they lost 38-0.
I think we just heard about the USC team status regarding injury.
Coaches don't determine if conditions are acceptable to play, i think that's the umps job.
Throwing at a Coach in the dugout or field of play probably would have cost a player his career, no matter what the circumstances.
Getting drilled by a pitcher is part of the game like it or not. You can never convince me that Gibson and Drysdale didn't control aspects of the game due to the knowledge by the opposing player may get one near the coconut if he crowded the plate. Alot of players refused to give in to either of them also. that's the beauty.

Don't care what the relationship with the coaches might be, you don't bury anyone like that...period!!!!!

I suppose the reason you comment about "several injured players" is because you think that the score might have been worse if the other players played. Right?

The 9 starters each batted at least 4 times in the game. That is shameful. What do you think the people would be saying if Powell was injured during once of his 5 times at bat playing in that "slop"? Do you know how easy it is to twist a knee?

One guy batted 7 times and another kid hit for the cycle. That is SAD!

I am entitled to my opinion, just as you are to yours. Apparently, based on your statements about the game, either you weren't at the game or you were munching on hot dogs with that special sauce. If you don't like my opinions about something, that is fine. From time to time, I may not like yours.

There is NO DOUBT in my mind, that Ron Polk at Mississipppi State would never pound anyone 38-0! (He certainly wouldn't let anyone bat 7 times in such a game or hit for the cycle in something so meaningless!)

He has way to much respect for the game to do such a thing to any team or coach. Try again.
To rebut "Fighting Squirrel"

The Head Coach of the home team decides whether the field is playable enough to start the game. The umpires have control of the game once the first pitch is thrown.

It was obvious that Coach Tanner wanted the game played regardless of the conditions, and even more obvious (and disgraceful) that the umpires were so intimidated by Tanner that they would not call the game due to unplayable conditions.

The conditions are not an excuse for what happened in the game, SC hammered the baseball, that would have happened on a dry night. I just thought it showed no concern for the athletes on the field to play the game on a lake.
I think we've demonstrated that ethics and sportsmanship are not always black and white/right or wrong issues. The eithics standards for coaches that I found are pretty dry, generic stuff with few specifics.

The thing to understand is every game is different and the score can often be very misleading. I would be interested in seeing more suggestions instead of dead end arguments!

As a winning team, get the game over with. Don't let your defensive guard down and turn a 30-2 game into a 30-20 game.

On offense there are several ways to kill innings without intentionally striking out. Bunt back to pitcher, when it can be booked as a sac if possible. Have runners get caught in run-downs to end innings.

A lot of times its just a key out here to there to prevent another disastrous inning.

Steve Pearce Named SEC Player of the Week!

Columbia, S.C. - South Carolina junior infielder Steve Pearce has been named SEC Player of the Week following his weekend performance in the Gamecocks' sweep of Charleston Southern. In his first three games as a member of the South Carolina baseball team, Pearce batted .800 (8-for-10) with three home runs, six runs scored and eight RBI.

Pearce went 5-for-6 in Saturday's 38-0 win vs. the Bucs with two homers, including a grand slam and seven RBI. In Sunday's 3-0 win vs. the Bucs, Pearce was 3-for-3 with a game-winning homer. The five hits collected on Saturday are the most hits in a game by a USC player this year and the most hits since Landon Powell had five vs. Georgia on May 17, 2003.

South Carolina (3-0) remains ranked seventh in the nation by Baseball America and jumped to eighth in the latest Collegiate Baseball poll. The Gamecocks return to the field on Friday at 3 p.m. in a weekend series vs. UNC-Wilmington at Sarge Frye Field.

What in your opinion is the score to call the dogs off in the swcond inning. (pick one).
1-0,2-0,3-0,4-0,5-0,6-0,7-0,8-0,9-0,10-0,11-0,12-0,13-0,14-0,15-0,16-0,17-0,18-0,19-0,20-0,21-0. Then what do you do, (being a perfect coach) to stop this scoring and make sure that you don't hurt anyones feelings?. I remember GT comming back from a bunch of runs down to win a ball game with a score of 27-23. So what do you do....

Apparently you don't know the difference between drilling someone and drilling someone. That is ok.

The pitcher, Christiansen (I believe that is his name) allegedly threw at the guy about 20 feet from the plate and the guy wasn't even looking at the pitcher...That is apples and oranges, my friend.

I don't know if the case is still pending or they've settled.

Of all the websters, I am amongst a handful that answers questions directly. When you are leading a team 21-0 in the 2nd inning, I call off the dogs and let the second and third stringers play. Even if I'm playing the New York Yankees with ARod in the lineup.

If you have problems with five letter words let me know.

I know plenty about the Christiansen situation. Where, in your wildest dreams and in your fertile little imagination, have I written that you should drill someone in the face/head when they are not even looking in your direction and the pitcher is warming up to start the inning?

I thought so.

I was at the game and I can promise you, if you were there you would know that Coach Tanner did not, in any way, try to run up the score. It was the teams second game of the year and he is still evaluating his players. Steve Pearce batted 7 times. He only had 1 at bat on friday night so Coach let him get more at bats on saturday. Look at it from the perspectice of Coach Tanner. You have about 15 to 16 position players who are all quality players that could probably start at other SEC schools or respectable programs. When you have kids who are fighting for playing time, what do you want them to do? Throw away an at bat so that they look worse and make the other team feel better. These kids are out there trying to earn more at bats. After the second inning. Coaches did not allow baserunners to advance unless it was 200% sure they would be safe. They didnt take extra bags, they just hit the ball, plain and simple. Charleston Southern was surely embarrased but it was not because of anything the South Carolina coaches did. You should be more realistic and quit trying to stir up something when you were not even there to witness it. Coach Tanner wins with class and loses with class and I think you are probably the first person since he started coaching who has criticized his character and maybe you should think about that before bashing a coach who is regarded by many as the best in the SEC and country. There, I have spoken my piece. I seriously doubt you will respond knowing that you were not there and you have no real reference other than looking at a box score on the internet.

P.S. The series between USC and Charleston Southern is a very friendly one, and that will not change because of this Saturday's score. No matter how hard you try to make USC out to be the bad guy.

Might have been from this post. Can you explain why he would need a football helment.

Beenthere.... when I made reference to the fact that Carolina had several injured players, it was for the purpose of clarification of why even more players weren't substituted for.

Yeah, it would have been bad for Landon to get hurt late in the game because of wet conditions... fact is, he had to stay in the game because of injuries to backups that left them with a grand total of two catchers. Coach Tanner pulled him from behind the plate early in the game and put him at 1st base.... but he had to stay in the game in case the backup catcher got injured. What do you do if Powell is out of the game and the backup gets hurt... tell a SEC pitcher that he is now an emergency backup SEC catcher? noidea

Tanner started emptying the bench in the fourth inning, putting in mostly true freshmen that may not get playing time again this season. They contributed to scoring 13 runs or so, and maintained a shutout. I'm not sure what else he could have done, other than tell a group of 18 year olds not to throw strikes or swing the bat, or tell a JUCO transfer that played two different positions in his first start to bag it and give up. Not only does Pearce want a starting position... those other players do, too. duel

Normally, I agree with most of what you've posted in the last few years, but I'd hope that you've reconsidered your thought that some batters should have been hit. Reason... if your son wound up missing the season after the 2nd game because an overzealous pitcher was aiming for his trunk, and instead broke his hand or hit him in the face, you'd be pretty upset. I would be too.

By the way... I didn't have "special sauce" for my hotdog... have to try it sometime. Big Grin

I don't think you have to be at a game to know what went on at the game. That is what box scores and running commentaries are for...or radio broadcasts. 38-0 in a BASEBALL GAME SAYS IT ALL. The football team only scored that many points in 2 games and they lost one of them!

Senioa...I was waiting for you to get personal and start name-calling since you obviously didn't get it and still don't get it.
