Here's an update on how some of the stronger South Texas 5A teams are doing.

San Antonio Reagan had some early struggles, but has won 12 in a row. The team, currently ranked 2nd in state, is now 17-3 overall, 8-1 district. Dominating on the offensive front is unsigned senior 2nd baseman Vince Postert, with 9 doubles and 5 HR's.

Laredo United South, which faced Plano West in the State semifinals last year, is 18-4, 7-0 in district. The team is ranked 3rd in state.

Corpus Christi Carroll, currently ranked 6th in the state, is 17-2-1 overall, 8-0 in district.

On the 4A front:

Corpus Christi Moody, ranked 1st in state, is 17-1 overall. Senior first baseman Rudy Flores is ranked as the 91st high school prospect by Baseball America and Perfect Game ranks him as the top-ranked 1st baseman in the state of Texas.

2nd-ranked Corpus Christi Calallen is 21-2 overall, 7-0 in district. With Calallen's win on Friday vs. Tuloso-Midway, OU-bound LHP Jordan John, ranked 78th in the country by Rivals.com, earned his 6th shutout and 7th win of the season.

Medina Valley (near San Antonio) is 16-3-1 overall, 6-0 in district. In late March, pitcher Zack Dodson, who has signed with Baylor, had thrown 52 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings.

I think that the 4A champs will come from that area, on the 5A side not so much...my south texas insider has said that the 3 teams you mentioned SA Reagan, Laredo United, and South Texas Carroll although they have very good records got pounded when they played really good competition(e.g. CC Calallen and CC Moody)

San Antonio Reagan got beaten by Calallen last year, but defeated Calallen this year. To my knowledge, Reagan has never played Moody.
Right, Moody last played Reagan in 06' when they were 5A(UIL Site). I believe that Moody was the team that Reagan could never get by....otherwise I think Reagan would have a state title or two. I just re-read my original post, Carroll is in CC right; I always have called them South Texas Carroll; Maybe because It sounds so much like South Lake Carroll.

Corpus Christi Carroll has a good record, but most of their games have been against weak teams, with the exception of Moody and Sharyland. They are starting several freshmen who won't be up to the superior teams they will meet in the playoffs.

While the youngsters are gaining valuable experience, they have made multiple errors, both actual and mental.
I saw a great game today between Reagan & Medina Valley. Both teams had 5 hits, but Medina strung theirs together and won 3-0, handing Reagan their 4th loss of the season. Baylor-signee LHP Zack Dodson did a great job on the mound for Medina Valley, throwing lots of heat. Dodson threw 9 K's and Harrell threw 10.

It was a good non-district warm-up for both teams for the 4A and 5A playoffs.

Awesome game against Reagan sweet win but Moody has stopped Reagan for years before, can't speak for Calallen cause they lost early in the year but I know they can beat them now. I've seen them and Reagan when they played CC Ray in Laredo Ray won 5-3 so to answer your quesiton any team can be beat on any given day but for real No. Watch out for Buda Hayes they look good. Good luck to the Medina Valley great game. Classes don't matter. Bring the game on thats what matters that day.
I agree it was a great game. Well played by both teams. I've been following baseball for quite a while now, and I've seen good teams. Moody and Calallen are always studly; and this Medina Valley team looks a lot like those squads. Great pitching in the John kid and the Dodson kid. Moody plays great defense, and all three teams hit the ball well. Hays is the one team mentioned I haven't seen this year. What do they have? Statistically they look good.
Maybe Hooksfan can answer that one, I haven't heard too much on CC Carroll and eventhough they have a really good record; My Southtexas connections have their doubts about CC Carroll being a real threat for the 5A region 4 title. I have a different opinion, with a record like that they will have their say before it's all said and done with.

Carroll continues to win, and you can't argue with success. IMO, they are in a weak district, and this is going to be reflected in the playoffs. They have pitching, and while it has been adequate, it has not been overwhelming. Blackmar, Gomez, and Garza have some playoff experience, but Dumas and Hawkins, are freshman. Cano has pitched some, not sure, he may also be a freshman.

I understand a couple of kids have been offered scholarships, the catcher, a big strapping kid who transferred in this year from San Antonio or Houston, originally from Aruba has an offer from an Oklahoma school, and Luke Garza, 3rd baseball, and pitcher. Not sure where he is going.

Williams and Blackmar are probably their best hitters overall.

Just my opinion, they are weakest on defense. Lot of overthrows, mental errors, and lack of hustle on some of the players.
Calallen 1 CC Ray 0. Jordan John pitches 3 hitter and wins but, Jeremey Gonzalez pitches 1 hitter and loses. Roland Resendez hits 6 inn hr to win the game. And thats why it should be 3 game series all the time. CC Moody 10 CC Tuolso Midway 5. Lots of errors. Moody shot 4 hard line drives that made them errors. They were some shots. Game didn't finish till 1:08am. Over 2000 people showed up and half stayed till the end. Alice wins 3-2 over Medina Valley. So its Calallen vs Alice at Cabiness Corpus Christi 1 Game. CC Moody vs Uvalde best of 3 Fri Robstown 7pm. Sat in San Antoino's Wolfe Stadium 6pm. Game 3 30 mins after if needed
Regional Semi-final 5A pairings in South Texas:

San Antonio Reagan vs. Mission Sharyland

Laredo United vs. Austin Westlake

Reagan's chances of advancing to regional finals -- and possibly to the state tourney -- are at least as good as last year's team. Despite losing ace Casey Pitcher, who graduated in 2008 and is now pitching for UTSA, the Rattlers have a very solid 1-2 combination: Northwestern State-signee Matt Harrell and Howard JC-signee Carter Hahn. In addition, they have a lethal weapon in freshman phenom Bryce Dorn, son of a former minor-league pitcher who is already about 6'3" and very solid physically. In Dorn's first varsity start against Calallen, Dorn pitched a complete game allowing only 1 run which was unearned. He struck out 7, walked 2 batters and only gave up 3 hits. I believe his record is 5-0.

Does anyone know what's going on with 4A teams?

Right now is a great time to be watch high school baseball in South Texas. Moody High School, coming off a 14-1 win over Uvalde in the Region 4 quarterfinals, has found their defensive game. While their bats have been hot throughout the season, Moody's defense has been a big question mark all season. From the looks at that last game at the Wolff against Uvalde, they may be finally put it together. They turned 3 double plays in the game, and a triple plays. Of course triple plays are more about being at the right place at the right time, these are the kind of breaks a team can take advantage of when prepared. After all, luck is when preparation meets opportunity. Even though Moody still has Alamo Heights ahead of them, it's hard not to imagine the possibility of a Moody/Calallen Region 4 Championship Series. This is the reason baseball is religion in Corpus. Two of the State's (and even the nation's) top high school programs going toe to toe for a chance to play in Round Rock. But first, Alamo Heights. Bring on the Mules!

Correct JAKE13 it was a rainy and cold game I was there but its all about the state championship not the rankings which is nice but its about the metal around the neck. The gold metal nothing else. Texarkana Texas looks really good after beating Mesquite Poteet, Mckinney North also Brenham look really good but getting ready for the South Texas Showdown. One more week but it really looks good. Keep yall posted down south. Good luck to all.
Update CC Moody loses to San Antoino Alamo Heights 1-0. Robstown loses to Bellville 3-1 and Sinton loses to Giddings 7-3. Calallen plays tonight against Austin Lake Travis in Austin. All games are 2 out of 3. Keep yall posted over the weekend. Best of luck to all. See anything can happen. It did. Not taking away anything from the teams that won, they did excellent. Good job round 2 coming up saturday for all of them.
Pistola is right. Rankings mean nothing when you're sitting at home and someone else is playing in round rock. I got some inside info about that AH/Moody game. AH pitched a lefty they hadn't pitched in a month. He was very slow and deliberate on the mound, stepping on and off the rubber multiple times in the course of an at-bat. I guess it got the Moody hitters, who are used to having big innings early and putting away the game, off their rhythm. I am a Moody grad and fan, but I can definitely appreciate sound strategy. And that was sound strategy. The Moody players missed a few signs, and it cost them some runs. had it been a one game playoff, it would have paid off in spades for AHHS, but unfortunately it has now left their hand exposed and I don't think they're holding much more than a pair of 3s. The great thing about a series is a team can adjust, and I do believe that ultimately the better team advances from a playoff series. The series shifts to San Antonio for games 2 and 3. Go Trojans!

That Reagan/Sharyland matchup should be a barn burner. Is anyone going to have twitter at this game? I'd love to get some updates.
You're right Pirates. They played Alice in the first round last year in a one game playoff. Alice threw their number 4 at them, and it payed off for them. Anything can happen in these playoffs. Just last week, we saw Calallen barely escape a Corpus Christi Ray team that showed up ready to play. Calallen managed to get out of their with a 1-0 win.
Reagan-Sharyland game update:

top of 2nd inning, Sharyland has at least 1 runner in scoring position. Reagan pitcher Matt Harrell is pulled after hitting 3 batters and walking 4. Corbin Oakes comes in to pitch and Harrell moves to LF. Sharyland currently leads 3-1.

Oakes has 2.84 ERA for the season. April 24 is the last time he pitched.
CC Calallen 5 Austin Lake Travis 3 Heard the game on the local radio station. Calallen was down 2-0 til the fifth inn. Hoelscher was hit by a pitch and eventually scored then Garza hits a 2 run bomb left field. 3-2 Cats. Top of 6th Cats score 2 more on errors 5-2. Bot 6th Westlake scores one on a Walla home run to left field. Next game continues Sat at 4 in Calallen. Good luck Cats.
CORPUS CHRISTI — Let the games between No. 1 Moody and No. 2 Calallen begin. As quoted by the CC Caller Times.

The much anticipated Class 4A baseball playoff series between the top two Class 4A teams in the state will take place later this week, after Calallen outlasted No. 3 Lake Travis, 10-4 Saturday night in the third and decisive game of their best-of-3 Region IV-4A semifinal series at Wildcat Stadium. Lake Travis won Game 2 of the series, 7-3 Saturday afternoon, while Calallen took the opener, 5-3 Friday night in Austin.

The defending 4A state champion Wildcats (34-3 overall) will play the Trojans (34-2) for the Regional IV-4A championship later this week. Moody defeated Calallen, 7-4 in a non-district game at Whataburger Field earlier this season.

“This is a sweet victory and we’re happy to be where we’re at. Moody will be gunning for us and we’ll be gunning for them,” said Wildcats coach Steve Chapman, whose team didn’t even know if it would get to defend its state title until the UIL ruled unanimously Wednesday that a Calallen senior baseball player didn’t move from Riviera into the Calallen school district for athletic purposes. “We’re going to have to play well throughout (to beat them) because you can’t have any bad games when you're playing Moody.”

“We’re looking forward to playing them. It is one of the premier matchups in the state and so may the best team win and represents Region IV at the state tournament,” said Bryden McClure, who had three hits in the doubleheader Saturday and was one of 10 Wildcats seniors who graduated Saturday.

Calallen was pushed to the brink Saturday after Lake Travis (31-5) handed the Wildcats their first home loss in three years in Game 2 of the series.

The Wildcats responded by scoring four runs in both the first and fifth innings and they used senior left-handed pitcher and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi signee Adam Hoelscher’s (4-0) strong effort to take the finale.

Hoelscher, who hadn’t pitched in 18 games and was given the game ball by his team afterward, went 4.1 innings, yielded four runs on three hits and had four key strikeouts. Relievers Nick Guinn and Jordan John combined to pitch the final 2.2 innings of the game for Calallen. John, the Wildcats’ ace who signed to play with the University of Oklahoma next season, pitched the last two innings and struck out three to close it out.

Calallen needed just two hits to take a 4-0 first-inning lead in Game 3. The Wildcats forged ahead when Jacob Hubert slid hard into second base on a fielder’s choice ground ball, which knocked down Cavaliers infielder Kevin Conroy on the play, allowing Matthew Garza (who was 2 for 3 in the game with a stolen base and three runs scored) to score. Dustin Vaughan (who was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded), Bryden McClure (who drew a bases loaded walk) and Hunter Whetsel (who had an infield single) also drove in runs for the Wildcats in the frame to stake them to lead.

Wyatt Mathisen drove in Roland Resendez on a fielder’s choice ground ball in the second inning to push Calallen’s lead to 5-0.

Lake Travis threatened in the bottom of that inning, as it loaded the bases with two outs before Hoelscher struck out the final batter of the frame on an offspeed pitch to get out of it.

“I was proud of our kids for the way they played tonight --- we had our opportunities,” Cavaliers coach Roy Kinnan said. “If we could have gotten one or two hits with the bases loaded tonight it could’ve been a different (game).”

Cohl Walla’s — who signed to play baseball next season with the University of Texas — third-inning sacrifice fly brought the Cavaliers within 5-1, before Hoelscher avoided further trouble by striking out the final batter of the frame to strand a runner on first base.

Hoelscher also stranded a runner on third base in the fourth inning by getting the final three batters of that frame on two strikeouts and a line out to the second baseman Garza.

The Wildcats added four unearned runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-1 lead. Garza tripled with two outs before scoring on a Lake Travis fielding error.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN I DEFINITELY WILL KEEP ALL OF YOU ALL POSTED. SAN ANTONIO — Many felt Moody High School’s baseball team wasn’t dealing with a full deck when its Region IV-4A semifinal series against Alamo Heights opened Thursday night.

As things turned out, the Trojans’ aces — along with a resounding display of hitting — trumped anything the Mules could offer.

The top-ranked 4A team in the state, the Trojans hammered the Mules in two five-inning ballgames Saturday at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium, winning the best-of-3 series 2-1. Moody posted an 11-0 rout in Game 2 before tagging a 12-0 defeat on the Mules, earning the slot in next week’s regional final, a much-anticipated showdown with second-ranked Calallen.

“We expected it. We definitely expected it,” Moody right fielder Rudy Flores, who drove in six runs in the two games, said of Saturday’s dominance. “We came out (Friday) for practice, and that’s what we were talking about. Treat it like every other game.”

The two whitewashings followed Moody’s lackluster, mistake-riddled 1-0 loss to the Mules in the series opener on Thursday in Robstown. It was a drastically different performance on Saturday, however.

The 34-2 Trojans combined for 22 hits in the ballgames and took advantage of nine errors by the befuddled Mules (27-7). No. 2 starter Andrew Cantu (14-0) tossed five innings of four-hit ball in Game 2. Moody’s No. 1, Justin Meza (14-1), the hard-luck Game 1 loser, Cantu and Ray Herrera teamed on a two-hit shutout in the series finale.

“We knew they were good. It’s not like we’re surprised how good they are. I’m a little bit surprised that we didn’t play better,” Mules coach Glynn Tschirthart said. “Obviously we didn’t handle the big stage at all. They got five on us in the first inning in both games. That’s huge on a day like this momentum-wise. You’ve got to play a perfect ballgame to stay in the game with them No. 1, and then to beat them you’ve got to get a couple of breaks, which we got down there Thursday night.”

There were no such breaks forthcoming for the Mules. Before Cantu even toed the rubber he had a 5-0 cushion, which increased to 7-0 after two and 10-0 after Flores’ three-run home run in the fourth off Will Nash.

Meza reaped the same benefits as the Trojans staked him to a 5-0 lead, and that margin grew to 10-0 after two innings.

“That’s my team. That’s the way they play,” Moody coach Corky Gallegos said. “It was odd what happened the other day. I brought it out in the open. I’m not going to hide anything about us missing signs.

“It proves that even really good teams try to take matters into their own hands,” Gallegos said. “Today, we were on the same page, we got all that straightened out. It goes to show what happens when we play as a team.”

Alamo Heights didn’t go with its ace pitcher in Game 2, instead starting the little-used Nash (1-1). Tschirthart was hoping to follow the Game 1 script in which he started another little-used hurler, Michael Almquist, who handcuffed the Trojans with an assortment of offspeed and breaking pitches. Instead, Nash lasted one inning plus one batter, allowing five hits and six runs.

“Oh yeah, that’s what they were trying to do. They were trying to find our weakness and they thought that was our weakness,” Flores said. “But we just had a bad game the other night, it wasn’t a weakness. It was just something to build upon.”

Moody built quickly, leaving Tschirthart to wonder if his decision to hold ace Luke Maloy (13-2) until Game 3. In 3.2 innings, Maloy was lit up for 11 runs on 10 hits, three by Moody’s No. 9 batter A.J. Longoria, who drove in three runs.

“Who can say? I’m going to stay up late tonight second guessing myself on it,” Tschirthart said. “All I can say is we went into it trying to do the best thing for our kids to try and win the series, and it just didn’t work out today.”

Conversely, everything worked for the Trojans, who regained their dominant swagger.

“In baseball, you can throw all that stuff out. It’s just what kind of day you’re going to have,” Gallegos said. “The other day I sensed early we were hitting shots and they were making plays, they were hit right at people. Here we were playing for one run and that type of thing.

“Tomorrow’s a different day. Today’s a different day. I told them today I’m not going to take the bat out of their hands,” Gallegos said. “They’re going to come out swinging and do what they do best. They did it. We just cleaned the slate of last game and turned them loose again.”

Jake 13 you are right. We shall find out tomorrow. C C Calallen's Coach Chapman is not only trying to back out on the 3 game series but also trying to change the fields such as playing at Aviator Field in Robstown which holds about 3000 maybe a little bit more or Cabiness Field which holds 2500 max out. Or even at Calallen which doesn't hold that much. What he is trying to do is put the Moody crowd out of the game. Out of 8000 people that will show up 3/4ths will be Moody. No matter what he does the Moody crowd will show up. Tailgate party. We actually do tailgate partys 4hrs before the game some of the fathers are there. Back to Chapman he knows his team is not deep. Found out against Austin Lake Travis. Errors beat Travis. Just upset that he is backing out it was a done deal but the kittens are scared. All I hear is Jordan John will shut down the offense of Moody. He didn't last time. If they are not scared lets go 3 the way it was supposed to be. This is the National spotlight here don't do it like the way Chapman want's to do it. Like the big leagues in the playoffs nobody plays one game then advances. Come on. Said before you think you know but you have no idea. Keep you all posted on the soap opera down south. Please comment. Love to hear what you all would like to say. Both sides of the story are already out.
From the Corpus Christi Caller Times CORPUS CHRISTI — The Region IV-4A baseball final between Moody and Calallen will be play this week at Whataburger Field coaches determined Monday morning.

The two teams will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. in Game 1, Friday at 7 p.m. in Game 2 and, if necessary, Saturday at 11 a.m. in Game 3.

The nature of a region finals series ensures it will be a tension-filled set of games, because there's a state tournament berth on the line. But the stakes are probably even a little higher than usual with Moody (34-2) and Calallen (34-3) being ranked No. 1 and 2 in the state, respectively. Baseball America ranks Moody as the No. 2 team in the country and Calallen as No. 6. Both teams could have a claim for the top spot with a series win, because the publication's No. 1 team, Houston Bellaire, was upset by Brazoswood in the region semifinals Saturday. The National spotlight will have all eyes on Corpus Christ,Texas because of the national rankings these two fine teams have posted and the history they have made year in and year out since Moody has moved from 5A to 4A in 2007. Just posted 20 minutes ago in the Caller Times. Time 10:30am June 1st 2009. I will keep you all posted on more to come. If you all can try to make it down here. If not look for Moody Baseball on Twitter or djtommygunn for info.
