Details after I walk my dogs...

Pivotal point in the game came in the 2nd inning. NR's Travis Johnson led off with a double to right center. That was followed by a walk during which Johnson advanced to 3B on a WP. After a stolen base to put runners at 2nd and 3rd, Ryan O'Hara hit a sac fly to RF scoring a run and moving the other runner to 3B. A ground ball by Blake Eure to 3B got the runner on 3B in a run down for the 2nd out. Leadoff hitter Tyler Brown was then hit by a pitch. It appeared TJ Lighton got himself out of the inning with only 1 run on a ground ball to SS, but somehow the ball got through the SS legs scoring a run and extending the inning. The Warriors made it hurt as Brandon Lowe followed with an RBI single, Zach Vann an RBI single, and Kyle Moore a 2-run homerun. All told there were 7 runs on 4 hits in the inning, but only 1 earned. Nansemond pitcher Josh Howard went the distance giving up 3 hits while striking out 4 improving his record to 3-1.

Standouts for NR Brandon Lowe 2-3 with a run scored and RBI, Zach Vann 2-3 with an RBI, Travis Johnson 2-3 2 runs scored, Kyle Moore with a 2 run HR

Great Bridge 9, Western Branch 3

Great Bridge outhit and outscored Western Branch. Western Branch left two runners on base in the bottom of the first (McPherson and Thompson), who had reached on singles, when Great Bridge turned the first of their three double plays of the night. Great Bridge scored first, putting 3 unearned runs on the board in the second inning. Western Branch answered in the bottom of the third when McPherson, freshman, hit a 2-run home run. Immediately following McPherson, Thompson hit a solo shot to tie the game. That would be all of Western Branch's scoring. Great Bridge loaded the bases in the 4th but were unable to score any runs. The next inning, though, when Great Bridge loaded the bases with a lead off single, HP and FC on a bunt, they strung together three hits (double, single, and double) to score 6 runs. Western Branch's lead off batters in each of the 6th and 7th innings (Thompson and Barefoot) reached on singles but were sent to the dugout on double plays, including a game-ending double play.

For GB, those with hits were Lee 3-5 (2S, DB), Higgerson 3-5 (3S), Dudley 1-4 (S), Grissom 2-2 (S, 3B), Owen 2-3 (2S) and Cody 2-4 (S).

For WB, those with hits were McPherson 2-3 (S, HR), Thompson 3-3 (2S, HR), Cassidy 2-3 (2S), Barefoot 1-1 (S) and McAndrews 1-3 (S).

WP: Flaherty pitched 5 innings, 3ER, 6H, 0BB. He was relieved by Wolzak who gave up 3 hits in the 6th and 7th but was assisted by his defense turning double plays each inning.

LP: Thompson, pitched 4innings, 5ER, 11H, 1BB, 1HB. Bennett relieved Thompson in the 5th inning, Eisenhower faced 3 batters in the 6th and Bradshaw faced 3 batters in the 7th.

Warriors came out swinging in the first inning after starter Zach Rice retired the side in order striking out 2. Tyler Brown and Josh Howard hit back to back doubles followed by a walk a fielder's choice for an out and then the first of Kyle Moore's two HR's in the game. Moore's HR was followed by a walk and three consecutive hits chasing Lakeland's starting pitcher. After 1 inning score was 7-0 NR. In the second, Rice retired the side in order again. The Warriors added 2 more runs in the 2nd inning courtesy of Kyle Moore's 2nd HR of the night. The flood gates opened in the bottom of the 3rd inning when the Warriors scored 7 more runs highlighted by Josh Howard's 2 run blast to left center.

Multi-Hit Batters
Ryan O'Hara 3-3 with a double and 4 RBI
Kyle Moore 2-2 2 HR and 5 RBI (3 HR in last 4 AB)
Josh Howard 2-4 with a double and HR and 3 RBI
Willie Gillus 2-2 2 RBI

Zach Rice started the game and pitched 4 scoreless innings giving up 3 hits while striking out 4 and extending his scoreless innings pitched to 13.2 on the season.

WB, your comments about the double plays are well taken. Both pitchers gave up a lot of hits, enough for either side to win, but 3 double plays in a seven inning game really eliminate chances of scoring runs.

Another important factor was the hitting of the eighth and ninth place batters for GB. They put the ball in play and turned over the line up. If you allow batters to hit five times in a seven inning game, as the top of GB's order did, you will probably lose.
First Half Silver Linings.........
Deep Creek: Won 2 of their last 4 including beating Nansmond River
Great Bridge: 8-0; 2 shutouts and only one game giving up more than 3 runs
Grassfield: Has never given up more than 2 runs in a game; 4 shut outs so far and working on 3 consecutive shut outs.
Hickory; won 3 of last 4 games
Indian River: won 4 of last 5 games
Kings Fork: Was held to one run or less in 4 of their first 5 games; has scored 3 or more in last four games
Lakeland: Help me here folks....second half has to get better?
Nansmond River: After 3 game losing streak, offense is back scoring 31 runs in last 2 games.
Oscar Smith: After getting blown out in first 3 losses, average margin of loss in last 2 games was only 2 1/2 runs.
Western Branch: Still have the #1 offense and have thrown 3 shutouts.

Second half ought to be fun.

Oscar Smith's season so far:

Only all-district player junior 2B Steven Lorkiewicz jammed shoulder in game 5 sliding into 3B (he is out until the middle of May at least)! Transfer from Massachussets senior pitcher/outfielder (was throwing 85-87) broke his wrist in practice diving for a ball after 2nd game of season! Returning sophomore catcher quit before season started! Junior outfielder has tendonitis in both feet! Senior relief pitcher broke his nose this week!

The team is still playing 4 sophomores and now a freshman catcher! the infield was not deep before Lork got hurt and now its worse. I guess good news is there are only 2 seniors playing alot of innings!

Grassfield 5, Indian River 0. Grassfield now has allowed only 7 runs in 10 games!

Western Branch 2, Hickory 1.

Hickory pushed Western Branch to the wall, taking a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th in a game where both teams had to work hard for runs. With one out in the top of the 5th, Zack Niece doubled to CF. Following a groundout, Christian Lowery singled in Niece for Hickory’s first and only run of the game. Western Branch threatened to answer in the bottom of the 5th. With two outs, Garrett Brooks reached on a FC and advanced to third on Kyle McPherson’s double. Hickory intentionally walked Nick Thompson to load the bases. TJ Lighton pitched Hickory out of the jam by striking out Kenny Cassidy. Hickory threatened to score again in the top of the 6th. With two outs, Matt Campbell singled, Lighton singled and Ryan Blake was pegged to load the bases. Ryan Bennett induced the next batter to ground out to the short stop to end the inning and the threat. With one out in the bottom of the 6th, Shane Johnsonbaugh and Alex Hunt singled. Tyler Best replaced Lighton on the mound, inheriting Johnsonbaugh and Hunt as runners, both of whom advanced a base on a wild pitch. With first base open, Hickory intentionally walked Michael Donovan to load the bases. Best induced the next batter to hit into a 5-5-3 double play. With Hickory leading 1-0, Garrett Brooks opened the bottom of the 7th with a line drive single, stole second and tagged up to advance to third on McPherson’s fly out to right field. Hickory initially elected to pitch to Thompson with one out and speedy Brooks at third. After Thompson hit a foul ball over the left field fence, Hickory intentionally walked him and he took second on catcher indifference. With one out (and first base open), Cassidy, roped the first pitch of his at-bat to right center, driving in both the tying and winning runs.

For Hickory:
Lighton: 5 1/3 innings, 4H, 4BB (1 intentional), 3Ks, 0 runs
Best: 1 inning, 2H, 2BB (both intentional), 1ER
Best: 2-3; Campbell, Lighton, Niece (DB) and Lowery each with one hit.

For Western Branch:
Bennett: Winning Pitcher, CG , 4H, 1HB, 0BB, 1ER
Brooks: 2-4; McPherson, Cassidy, Johnsonbaugh and Hunt each with one hit.
