If that matchup happens the team that scores first has a huge advantage. Could be another 25 strikeout game with maybe 6-8 hits allowed between those two.

IMO WB is deeper and better defensively. If both pitchers do thier thing I think think the Bruins have the edge in another 1-0 or 2-1 type of game.

I also expect Hickory to handle DC this week with rested pitching. At this point any loss by Hickory is a big blow to thier chances.
Don't know that it would be shocking. Deep Creek has a way of winning games when the probabilities are against them. I know this year's team is not the same as last year's but, if I remember correctly, last year Deep Creek beat each of Hickory, Grassfield and Great Bridge by 1 run when the probabilities were against them. In 2008, Deep Creek beat Western Branch, regular season champion, by 2 runs when the probability was against them.

Like saipanwarrior posted (on April 07, 2010) “It all goes in cycles .....right now, no one is playing well in the Beach." Well, Hickory hasn't played well thus far either, and even though they might not be one of the top teams in the SE... I believe that they are still one of the better teams in the Tidewater especially after the wins against First Colonial and Landstown as well as Hanover in preseason. Hickory has the bats but are lacking that 1-2 punch in pitching. And as someone else has asked why the SED doesn’t have an 8 team playoff when the Beach does? Figuring that one out would be huge.
41, there is no doubt Hickory is a very dangerous team. Just ask IR. As you note they are in a district that is loaded. I also have made the point that SED probably has 5-6 of the best 10-12 teams in Tidewater (including the Pininsula).

Being alone on Flarhety island is really not a bad place to be. He had WB handcuffed in the District Championship last year until a come backer bit him and knocked him out. Sleep on him but he may be the difference maker when this is all over. If he's not the #1 at GB then he's the best #2 around.

Yes you did but I could not remember who said it. Thanks for reminding me.

Point (1)I agree with your comment about "SED probably has 5-6 of the best 10-12 teams in Tidewater."

Point (2) I would not want to get into a debate with who is number 1 or number 2 at Great Bridge (simple reason is... it is all speculation anyway). All I know is that Hickory has seen every number 1 pitcher to date in the SED and so one might ask why Great Bridge would be any different.

Not sure who you are referring to. But I have only been a guest (from the stands) on "Flarhety island" one time when Hickory played Great Bridge on March 26th. He held Hickory to 3 runs and left the game when it was 9-3. Other than that I do not know the player.

Yes he (Johnsonbaugh) did. But as you pointed out he was not the starter. NT was. Johnsonbaugh did a good job too, however.

Johnsonbaugh may have been more effective than the starter in that game. Thompson allowed 6 hits and 2 ERs in 4 innings and Johnsonbaugh allowed 3 hits and 1 ER in 3 innings.

WB and Blue Marlin... you both are on top of things. Thanks for reminding me.
Red Bird, If you are asking about if I have relationship to Flarhety; I have none or to any other pitcher for that matter. I am on record in these postings as saying GF with Cox going is the favorite against anyone.

All I know is what the results are and what I see coaches doing. The rest is purely opinion. If that starts a lively, respectful and sometimes humorous debate about what's happening so much the better. The season lasts 3 months so gotta get it all out there!
Western Branch 13 Oscar Smith 0

The final score does not reflect the closeness of the game nor the Tigers' efforts tonight. The score was 4-0 at the end of 6 innings. Mike Foreman (FR) pitched well for OS through 6 innings. The winning pitcher, Shane Johnsonbaugh, also pitched well through 6 innings, allowing no runs. Garrett Brooks (3S) and Nick Thompson (S, HR) had multiple hits for WB; Brandon Davis (S, 3B)had multiple hits for OS.
TEAM-------R--H--E
W. Branch--13-8--1
O. Smith----0--4--6

WP: Johnsonbaugh LP: Foreman

Johnsonbaugh ('12) pitched well tonight, throwing strikes and mixing his pitches. Garret Brooks ('12) showed why he's the best leadoff batter in the district with 3 base hits, including a perfect bunt hit. Nick Thompson's ('11) opposite-field homerun was impressive as well.

Michael Foreman ('13) battled for 6 innings before hitting a wall, allowing 3 earned runs before walking the 1st two batters in the 7th (they eventually scored). Brandon Davis ('10) was 2-for-3 with a triple & a stolen base. The 9-run 7th included 6 walks & 3 errors, but as WB said, the game was cleanly played for the most part by both teams for the first 6 innings.

Thanks WB for a noticing the guys' efforts... the guys are busting their butts and being run through the ringer... they are showing flashes of strides now... keeping everything in perspective (the excruciating 7th), it's a great thing to see happen.

Also... please try and pass the word to the parents over there that we really appreciated the class shown tonight when Mike was coming off of the mound in the 7th... that was really great to witness as well.
