Nansemond River 3R 3H 1E 4LOB
Lakeland 1R 2H 0E 3LOB

Nansemond River had 3 hits in the game and 2 of came in the 2nd inning when Tucker Rhoads laced a double to right center field. After a Kyle Moore walk, Ryan O'Hara laid down a sac bunt to move the runners to 2nd and 3rd base. Willie Gillus then laced a single in the gap between short and third scoring both Rhoads and Moore amking it 3-0 NR (they got one in the first on a sac fly by Zach Vann). For Lakeland Ryan Stalnaker hit a ground rule double in the top of the first inning. However, that would be all the offense they would muster of NR starter Zach Rice until the 4th inning. In the 4th Colby Bennett drew a 1 out walk and moved to 2nd on an errant pick-off attempt. Then Tyler Lilley hit a high pop fly to right field that the NR right fielder never saw until it hit the ground near the foul line. Bennett scored easily from second base. Rice regrouped and retired 10 of 11 batters coming down the stretch.

While NR had just 3 base hits they hit the ball hard most of the night. There were some very fine defensive plays by Lakeland. Right Fielder Daniel Fenton tracked down 4 fly balls on the run two of which he ran down at the warning track. First basemen Shane McCaw laid out on a hard ground ball to his right and got to his feet completing the unassisted putout. While a young team they battle and will give some SED teams problems all year.

Hickory over Indian River 11-8. WP: Campbell

Game was tied at the start of the 4th. After the first batter reached 1st the SP (Herbst) was pulled. Zach York came in and gave up about 4 to 5 hits and 3 to 4 runs. York was relieved by Campbell to stop the bleeding. He contained IR for the remainder of the game. Hickory came back with enough runs to take the game.

OSCAR SMITH SCOREKEEPER’S GAME COMMENTARY:

KINGS FORK...0 - 0 - 2 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 // 3 - 5 - 0
OSCAR SMITH 0 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 0 - 4 - x // 9 - 10 - 3
WP: McNeil (2-0) / LP: Welch / SV: Lex (1)

King's Fork's Cedric Henry ('12) belted the first pitch of the game to the left field fence for a leadoff double, then Daniel Gromkoski ('13) walked to start the game. Henry attempted to steal third, the throw was made on the bag, but the 3B dropped the ball. With runners at 2nd & 3rd with no outs, starting pitcher Jarrett McNeil ('12) struck out Welch, before walking Wilson to load the bases. He promptly struck out the next 2 batters to get out of the 1st unscathed.

All-in-all, McNeil tossed 5 innings, allowing 1 earned run while striking out 6. At the plate, he was the bat of the night, going 3-for-4 with a double, a run, and an RBI to help himself offensely.

Oscar Smith's Logan Lex ('13) entered the game on the mound in the 6th with the score 5-3 and a runner on 1st with no outs. He immediately struck out the side. Oscar Smith then scored 4 runs on 3 hits (Stephen Lorkiewicz ('12) 2-out RBI single followed by Conner Smith's ('13) 2-out, 2-run single), a walk, and a HBP in the bottom of the 6th to provide insurance before Lex closed out the game with an F9, K, K to the 3 batters he faced in the top of the 7th.

KINGS FORK:
Henry: 1-4, 2B
Wilson: 1-3, 2B, R, RBI, BB
Lee: 1-3, 2RBI
Ramos: 2-3, SB
Welch: 5IP, 8H, 6ER, 1BB, 6K
Henry: 1IP, 2H, 3ER, 1BB, 3K

OSCAR SMITH:
Lorkiewicz: 1-4, R, RBI, SB
C. Smith: 2-4, R, 3RBI, SB
McNeil: 3-4, 2B, R, RBI / 5IP, 5H, 1ER, 4BB, 6K
Johnston: 1-3, 2B, R, RBI
Packert: 2-3, 2R
Loudon: 1-2, R, BB
Lex: HBP, R, SB / 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 5K

PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS:
* King's Fork has dealt with a bunch of rainouts, but they will surprise people when they get some time under their belt. Zero errors, pitcher threw strikes, and they have a couple of bats that can hurt you as well.
* Oscar Smith Freshman SS/P Thomas Packert is 6-10 (.600) on the young season.
The KINGS FORK vs. OSCAR SMITH game was initially delayed one-half hour due to lightning in the area. The KINGS FORK fans were not the least bit happy. They stated that they had traveled to GRASSFIELD three nights this week only to be sent home for weather AND they didn't want a FOURTH trip to end up the same way!!! Quite understandable, under the circumstances ...

Great job by Lakeland to play NR to a 3-1 game and GB to a 5-4 game. Doesn't show up in the W column for them, but 2 competitive games with what appears to be very good pitching. Anyone know who pitched for Lakeland in those games?

Go Heels, I heard the GB/Deep Creek game was in fact 24-1 but sometimes coaches will downplay a score like that when reporting to the paper. Don't know if that was the case here.
