Southeastern District Games: March 21-27 (Week 2)

Looks like Indian River and Hickory both have a challenging week ahead of them.

Very interesting Tuesday. GB v GF for a spot at the top. NR needs to avoid a letdown as OS tries to right itself. Hickory looks to go to 2-1 and solidify itself as a contender.

Any guesses on the pitching matchups in the Great Bridge - Grassfield and Great Bridge - Hickory games?

Have to agree with ofs-10. I think Ingraham is better than anything Hickory has right now. Have to think GB wants it's best arm against the best arm they'll face this week.

Has Lighton returned for Hickory? Will he be available to pitch this week?

I do believe that Hickory has enough offense to keep them in any game. Their marginal pitching is not horrible and will suffice against most match-ups, as long as they continue to hit.

I think Diamond Stalker has it right. GB-GF should be a realitively low scoring game while GB-Hickory could be a shootout.

Of course it will go the other way because I said that.

If Great Bridge and Grassfield will throw their aces on Tuesday, who will pitch on Saturday for Great Bridge? Hickory?

Why do you say Hickory's offense is too potent? Thought they only scored one in their first game?

If GB sends Flaherty against GF whatever they have left is not Nick Thompson who pitched Game 1 for WB.

It will be a test for the GB pitching depth to see if the 8 they gave up to OS was out of the ordinary or something that will be a problem for them when Flaherty isn't on the bump. If Leighton and Flaherty aren't pitching Saturday both could score at least 5. A 10-8 game or something like that would not be out of the question.

GB just gave up too many walks against OS so thats where those runs came from...Everyone is sold on Flaherty as the stud over there but my money is on Cooper Jones..Hes not that fast, throws around 80-81 would be my guess, but he has an awesome curve and hits his spots..Any good hitting team is going to hit Flaherty,,truth is, in that district there arent many good hitting teams which makes Flaherty look better than he is. Not saying Flaherty isnt good, he is,,just like Jones better

WB 9, Deep Creek 0. Ryan Bennett pitched 6 innings in his first varsity start to pick up the win. Bennett allowed 2 hits (Mayfield for a single and Bruce for a double) while striking out 9 batters. WB had 10 hits including 2 hits a piece by Alex Hunt (1B, 2B), Kyle McPherson (1B, 3B) and Nick Thompson (1B, HR).

Nansemond River 10 Oscar Smith 0

Josh Howard threw 5 innings giving up 3 hits while striking out 7 in the game. NR scored 2, 3 and 5 runs in the first 3 innings before making wholesale substitutions. Kyle Moore was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI, Zach Vann was 2 for 3 and Hayden Champigny hit a 2 run HR in the 3rd. Oscar Smith did not help themselves much with 4 untimely errors in the field.

No offense to doverbird, but Flaherty proved himself last year along with Vanash and Stokes along with several others to help GB win the district title and also believe the district tourney. I am not saying Jones is not good or cant be a stud down the road. The other pitchers battled the likes of WB, IR, GF last year and came out on top.

Indian River needs to turn it around tonight. They've got some good bats but they haven't shown up so far this year.

Hickory's offense will be tested on Saturday against Flaherty. I think that they'll do well.

Interesting decision by Coach Lee to pitch Flaherty against Hickory this Saturday rather than against Grassfield last Tuesday. If Great Bridge prevails on Saturday, they should be the new number 1.

It doesn't surprise me. With the exception of WB they've lit up every team from the scrimmages on through this week.

Western Branch 16, Lakeland 3

Nick Thompson pitched five innings and picked up his second win of the season. Garrett Brooks hit two home runs, and Shane Johnsonbaugh hit a two run blast. Details after the basketball game.

Nansemond River 7 runs off 13 hits and 4 errors with 11 runners LOB
Indian River 4 runs off 5 hits and 3 errors

Tyler Brown picked up his 2nd win pitching 6 innings giving up 1 earned run on 5 hits while stiking out 9. Zach Rice pitched a perfect 7th to notch his first save. Brandon Lowe was 2 for 3; Zach Vann 3 for 4 and Travis Johnson 2 for 4.

It was a 1 run game for most of the night. NR opened a little breathing room in the 6th after consecutive walks were followed by RBI singles from Vann and Johnson. After the leadoff hitter for IR was walked and then caught stealing at 2nd Brown and Rice combined to get 5 consecutive outs to end the game.

NR was fortunate to overcome several mental errors running the bases to go along with the 4 errors in the field.

The Great Bridge / Hickory game has been postponed. Not sure why, it's not supposed to rain until tonight.

By postponing this game they're putting themselves in a bind. If they play Great Bridge on Monday, they also have Grassfield on Tuesday and NR on Friday. They don't have the depth in pitching to match up.

looks like we are set up with a great game next week when the number one and number two in the SE district meet up as Nansemond River goes to Great Bridge. Huge mistake if GB pitches Flaherty on Monday. I know their other pitchers are good but do they want to make the same mistake as WB by underestimating a lineup that has proven themselves to be solid one through nine? Not sure who else GB plays but unless they play WB that week as well they should pitch Flaherty against NR. IMO I would still pitch Flaherty against NR even if they play WB that week seeing as NR is clearly the better team and the one that GB will have to fend off for 1st in the district.

I am not sure we can say after 2 weeks that NR is clearly the better team. There are a handful of very good teams and a handful of teams that just don't have the same talent. A few tidbits from the teams that will battle for the top (if I understand the scores correctly):
Grassfield: In 4 games has only give up a total of 4 runs.
Western Branch: Has scored 43 runs in 4 games
Nansmond River: Has scored 35 runs in 4 games
Great Bridge: Has scored 27 runs in 3 games and only been scored upon in 1 inning (albeit 8 runs off two releivers)
Hickory: Given up 24 runs but has scored 20 runs in 3 games.

WB, any chance you could add Runs Scored and Runs Against to your standings? Just makes it interesting to see that while GB, NR and WB are getting the press, other teams like Grassfield have some good numbers of their own.
