Tough schedule for Grassfield. With a game last Friday and another tonight, I wonder what they'll have left for pitching on Tuesday night.

If opening day is an indicater I'm guessing that game isn't played tonight due to the rain this weekend.

Very prophetic, Go Dawgs. Highschoolsports.net is reporting that the game has been moved to Wednesday, March 28, AND that the location has changed to King's Fork. Maybe GF will confirm the change in location.
OSCAR SMITH SCOREKEEPER GAME COMMENTARY:

Oscar Smith...... - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 // 0 - 2 - 5

Western Branch - 2 - 4 - 0 - 7 - x // 13 - 10 - 1

WP: Rutherford (2-0) LP: Loudon (0-2)

The momentum of the game shifted very early as Oscar Smith's Stephen Lorkiewicz ('12) actually started the game with a leadoff double, but Smith's 2, 3, & 4 hitters went: soft, short fly to LF (left-handed batter doesn't pull a 2-0 fastball), the 3-hitter hits a dribbler back to the mound, and the 4 hitter K's on 3 pitches. WB came off enthused, & Smith took the field.

Starting pitcher David Loudon got Brooks to ground out to short to start, then walked McPherson. McPherson stole second, Johnsonbaugh flew out to center, then another big momentum shift to WB. With 2-outs, Loudon had Hunt 1-2 and threw 2 consecutive pitches that were so close to the zone that the catcher flinched to come off the field... both were called balls. He then walks Hunt, falls behind 2-0 to Barefoot, who doubles down the RF line to score a run. He eventually strikes out the next batter but not before a bounced pitch is blocked up the 3rd base line and lost by the catcher, scoring the second run. 2-0 after 1.

Smith went quietly in the top of 2, then the WB bats woke up. A leadoff hit by Rutherford, then a groundball to 2B on a hit-and-run. The 2B turns, flips to SS who tries to turn two. The umpire calls both runners safe. The call at 2B was a tough pill to swallow... that definitely could have been called the other way. After a sac bunt to move those runners into scoring position, Brooks hits a soft liner to CF, dropping in, scoring one & he gets to 2B on a poor relay home; then, McPherson shoots a triple to the left-center gap, scoring 2. He later scores on a Hunt single... score after 2, 6-0.

Neither team scores in the 3rd, then Smith Ks in all three at-bats in the top of the 4th before starting the bottom of the inning on defense: E5, E5, sac bunt (meaning all 7 runs after were unearned as it should have been a 3-up, 3-down inning). WB ends up scoring those runs on 5 hits (2 doubles), 2 walks, with 2 sac bunts mixed in.

Also to note, Smith got 2 runners on in the top of 5th with 1 out when Lorkiewicz hit a bullet that 3B Roth leaped up and made a Ozzie Smith-type jump & catch, then fired behind the runner at 1B to end the game. It was a great play.

Simply put, WB did all of the little (and big) things right... Smith's inexperience at certain positions showed all night. Borderline calls that went against the team ended up being killers as the team couldn't overcome them.

Main thing to point out from this game is that nothing should be taken away from Western Branch despite the fact that 8 to 9 of their runs were unearned... they played a good game more so than Oscar Smith was bad.

WB wins this game regardless, because they hit the ball well, played small ball well, played defense well, and their starting pitcher Rutherford worked quick & threw strikes. The errors just happened to make it embarrassing for Smith.

SMITH:

Lorkiewicz: 1-2, 2B, BB

Loudon: 1-2

WESTERN BRANCH:

Brooks: 2-4, 2R, 2RBI / 1IP, 0H, 0R, BB, K

McPherson: 2-3, 3B, 2R, 3RBI, BB, 2SB

Johnsonbaugh: 1-4, 2B, R, 2RBI

Hunt: 1-2, R, RBI, BB, SB

Barefoot: 2-2, 2 2B, R, 3RBI, HBP

Rutherford: 2-3, 2R, RBI / 4IP, 2H, 0R, 2BB, 5K

The preliminaries are over and the season really gets into full swing. WB gets GB and NR back to back in the next 5 days and Oscar Smith tests itself agaist the same two schools. That means 4 of the top 5 in the standings are going head to head as we get to spring break. I expect things to tighten up with 4 teams within 1 game of each other at the top and for OS to show better than they did against WB but still not get over the hump.
And who is GB's number 1 pitcher? I found it interesting that the Pilot listed the winning pitcher for GB's recent win as Jones and that his record was listed 3-0. The Jones who won that particular game, according to this web site, was Troy. So was Troy Jones the winning pitcher in 3 of GB's 4 wins thus far or is the Pilot combining all of the Jones' wins?

QUAD, You are right. JV is neglected on this board though it is a high school program. I thought a 16 inning game, which lasted 4 1/2 hours, was worth reporting and also reflected that both the Hickory and Grassfield programs have the promise of pitching depth in the future. I understand: that the game was 1-1 at the end of 7, 3-3 around the 9th, ended in the 16th, Hickory used 3 pitchers who each threw around 85 pitches and Grassfield used 4 pitchers with Britt Smith throwing 8 innings for Grassfield.

From what I understand, GB pitched Con.Jones on Monday 3/19, T.Jones on Tuesday 3/20 and then again for a few innings in a pitching by committee game on 3/23 against DC. They then pitched T.Jones again on Tuesday 3/27. T.Jones has been very effective in his three starts agains Lakeland, Deep Creek and Kings Fork and thus is 3-0. I understand that Coop.Jones has been used primarily in relief.

That is correct Connor went 5 1/3 against hickory than cooper came in relief. Troy pitched tues. against lakeland, Cooper started friday against deep creek and was followed by committee. Troy pitched tues vs king fork and was pulled after giving up 1st hit with 2outs in the 5th and Connor came in to close the game.
