luv baseball,

Your comments are on the mark. Assuming no more rainouts, Grassfield plays Hickory and Western Branch this week. (Wonder how they will split their pitching). Hickory plays Grassfield, Great Bridge and Nansemond River. (That will test your pitching depth). Deep Creek plays Indian River and Great Bridge, two very tough opponents. Indian River plays Deep Creek, Lakeland and possibly Nansemond River. (With three w's, IR is right back in the race). Western Branch plays Kings Fork, Lakeland and Grassfield. (Will they have enough arms for three games).

Good luck to all!

Have to think Cox goes against Western Branch. I'd expect Thompson to be waiting for him. He's already beaten Ali and Stokes so if he wins that is a monster 3 game stretch.

Hickory has been getting decent but not great numbers. Ingram should be able to keep the Grizzlies in the game. Hickory has some tougher choices getting Grassfield and Great Bridge back to back. It could be some of the coaches are the only ones who want rain outs!
luv bb

You are right, Hickory’s numbers are indicative of a team that has faced two of the top pitchers in the league/ region... but the top end of the line up has done a really good job battling against the local pitching talent. Still very early in the season but it will get interesting (in the second half of the season) once the arms get loose and the velocity increases.
"One bad inning" is the baseball cliche which is often used but is not true in this contest. Better hitting, better fielding and better pitching throughout the game...pretty much sums it up. Not a good day for the Hawks but like I said in an earlier post, the SE district coaches are playing Hickory like a "top tier" team. 4 games and we have already seen Thompson, Ali, and now Cox. I still believe that Hickory is better than they played tonight. Hopefully they prove this at Greatbridge tomorrow.

Seems like Cox pitched last night. If he did that probably means Ingram on Friday against WB. A Grassfield win gives them firm control of the district. If WB wins it's going to the wire.

Having seen both teams I think they key is for WB to have solid AB's get some BB's and put the ball in play. Less than 7 k's by the GF pitchers probably means a "W" for the Bruins. If the ball is in play they are a better defensive team.
WB - No doubt. Makes life easier for sure! Definitely want to be the 1 seed as you get a bye to regionals. In district tourney, you hope the 1 seed beats the 4 seed if you are a 2 or 3 seed. The 2 vs 3 game winner is playing for regional berth then. Champ game would be for "fun".

If 4 seed was to beat 1 seed (like WB did against IR last year) then game on until champ is decided for other regional berth.

Luv BB, IMO I agree that WB is probably better defensively. I am concerned that certain positions continue to make critical errors that have cost us the game in the past (last year). If our offense can produce against ECU bound Thompson, we can minimize that concern. Should be a fun game to watch.

Tommy Bradshaw got his first Varsity save.

I am not doubting your reporting but if the score is 10-0 how does he get a save?

Topdawg, Can't put my hands on my NFHS scoring book so went to major league rules (which generally require more, not less, because their games are 9 innings, not 7). Rule 10.19 MLB credits a pitcher with a save if:

1. Finishing pitcher in a game won by his team. (Yes)
2. He is not the winning pitcher. (Yes)
3. He is credited with at least 1/3 inning pitched. (Yes)
4. Satisfies one of the following [3] conditions:
(1) Enters game with a lead of no more than 3 runs . . . (No)
(2) Enters game with potential tying run in certain locations (No) or
(3) Pitches for at least 3 innings. (Yes)
Interesting pitching decisions this week By GF and GB against Hickory. Cox went for GF and probably doesn't pitch against WB tomorrow or maybe an inning or so if needed. Flaherty went for GB with Stokes recording only the final out so he probably goes against Deep Creek on Friday.

Wonder what went into Coach Todd and Coach Lee's thinking to go they way they did.

Imagine Ingraham, a leftie, will go for GF. Don't remember seeing too many left-handed batters in Hickory's lineup. WB has 3 left-handed batters in their starting lineup. Possibly that had something to do with it??

In my opinion, they are playing Hickory to give them the best opportunity to win and they certainly are giving Hickory more credit than some of the folks that post on here. I just would not read in to it that much. Respectfully speaking.
I really dont think, with amount of pitches that Cox threw, that you will see him throw against WB. WB can probably clarify, but i dont believe Thompson threw alot against LL nor would i think that Johnsonbaugh (if he starts) will throw alot tonight, leaving plenty of pitching for WB on Friday. Ingraham did pretty well last year (as a soph) and played very well at WWBA in florida last summer (with the Richmond Braves National) against some pretty good nationally ranked team. Plus i think that Coach Todd believes he has some pitching depth if Ingraham gets in trouble. Im more concerned with GF's def in spots and their offense, though they seem to be hitting better this year. They struggled last year against Thompson.
GF, Last year, the second game was a tight game (approx. 6 hits for WB and 4 hits for GF)in a 1-run game. Both pitchers did well. Often one play, good or bad, can decide that type of game. I am just hoping to see a well-played game by both teams.

I would think that both GF and WB have pitching available for tomorrow. I imagine (but do not have any inside info) that Thompson might be called upon to pitch (starter or reliever ??) as he did not throw many in the LL game. I am hoping (though again no inside info) that WB will throw someone other than Johnsonbaugh tonight so that he will be fresh for tomorrow. WB has at least 4 pitchers, other than Thompson and Johnsonbaugh (or Bradshaw because he threw last night),who could be thrown tonight against King's Fork.
