To clarify, Oscar Smith is currently tied with Grassfield for 3rd place in the M & M.

OS & GF have the same remaining opponents: WB, Woodside, Kecoughtan, and Bethel.  Not quite sure why it's such a LOCK that GF finishes 3rd.

* Kecoughtan beat Bethel 6-5 last night in a walk-off, with Matheson getting the win.

Standings are:

Woodside 6-0

W. Branch 4-2

O. Smith 3-3

Grassfield 3-3

Kecoughtan 2-4

Bethel 0-6

I'm trying to picture this...did the runner step on the fielder's foot that was not on the bag?

Since OS got their current coach Bowles about 5 years ago there has been steady improvement there.  The kids that are now upperclassman are the first having been there under his tenure.  They have also been better the 2nd half of most every season than the first half.

I have been a fairly steady in noting the increasing viability there as a baseball school.  They are on the threshold of moving over to a regular factor in the sport.   Winning will have a funny way of starting to draw out kids that might otherwise not pick up the game.  Kids who might not start on the football team may decide to play centerfield in baseball instead.  All it takes is 4/5 kids to turn a decent team into a great one especially if they run 4.8 40's and are otherwise good athletes.  There's a lot of kids in that building.

6 years ago they were a joke.  No longer.  If they make that leap from .500ish and inconsistent (see GB and WB this season) to say .750 and make a run to regionals somewhere soon it could be the move that gets them up the ladder permanently.

Has anyone figured out or located the standings for the other conferences in which SED teams are members?

Hickory did not have any games scheduled for the first week back from spring break.  (Who makes a schedule like that???)  Since that week, they have had rainouts and, it is my understanding, that opponents did not want to schedule makeups in weeks in which the opponents already had 2 games so Hickory is going to get slammed with games at the end.

BTW, Hickory has a game tomorrow and three next week.

Kecoughtan 1  Oscar Smith 0

Nate Matheson & Tadd Ennis went head to head in a pitcher's duel and Matheson got the break he needed for the win.

In the top of the 6th Kecoughtan's Barber hit a ground ball to the Smith 3B that got misplayed (came up too quick and ball hit bottom tip of his glove) for an error, then after an F7 for out 1, a maybe questionable balk call was made (no one on the Kecoughtan called for it and everyone on Smith side was confused by it), moving the runner to 2B, then 8-hitter Shackel hit a ground ball up the middle to score the unearned run.

Matheson (who has signed with ODU) had held Woodside and Western Branch to 1 run each through 7-innings in his previous starts and mixed pitches well today.  Smith finished with 4 hits, never got a runner to 3B, and Matheson walked 1 and struck out 10.  Ennis threw 6, allowing the unearned run on 6 hits and walking 1 as well.  Packert threw the 7th and got 3 outs.

Tough loss for Smith & big win for Kecoughtan, which, if Grassfield loses to Western Branch tomorrow, creates a 3-way tie for 3rd in the M&M at a 3-4 record each.

According to HRVarsity's schedules:

* Kecoughtan plays Woodside Tuesday, WB Thursday, & Grassfield the last Tuesday (May 20)

* Smith plays WB Tuesday, Bethel next Saturday (at Harbor Park), and Woodside May 20

* Grassfield plays WB tomorrow, Bethel Tuesday, Woodside next Thursday (at Harbor Park), and Kecoughtan May 20

It looks like Hickory actually has 5 games in the next 11 days and from the 13th to 20th has 4 in 8 days.

Not sure any HS team has that much quality pitching.  Getting 35 innings is a lot in 11 days.  Probably need to get down to the 5th and 6th pitchers at some point.

I think reasonable people would conclude that NR is the most talented team in the conference.

Within the region, the Bay Rivers group has some quality clubs such as Grafton.  Also, the Richmond group includes Midlothian and Hanover, amongst others.

The obvious elephant in the room is the potential for a Hanover/NR matchup.  For those who are unaware, Hanover was the consensus No. 1 team in the state in the preseason.  They are also the defending AAA State Champions.  They have not lost a game to an in-state opponent, to my knowledge, and have been ranked in the Top 10 nationally.

There is a lot of baseball to be played yet, and while that game is a real possibility, a more in depth discussion will have to wait for a later date!  As we have all seen on this very board...counting chickens has not proven to be a very successful strategy!
