Southeastern District Games: May 6-May 11 (Week 8)

It appears the real race is for 2nd and 6th place.

OS is 2 back of NR in the loss column but play NR on Monday.  A win would make it interesting when looking at who they play on Friday.  Anyone know what happens in a tie?  Do they look at head to head or make them play one more to settle it?  I know they did that previousy when 2 teams tied for first, but a tie for 6th?

Also, 2nd place is going to be interesting.  If GB beats GR and WB beats HI (both possible), we could have a 3 way tie for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.  Again, any idea on how this is settled? 

Weather looks like it may have more impact on the race than the actual games themselves.  Is there a hard stop to the regular season?  What influences standings if all games can not be played prior to the Districts?

It appears they are going to use the time from the end of the season (5/10) to the beginning of the tournament (5/17) for make up games.  So far, the following games show on the SE district website (http://www.southeasterndistric...rg/g5-bin/client.cgi)

5/13 Deep Creek @ Indian River

5/13 Hickory @ Lakeland

5/13 Nansemond River @ Kings Fork

5/14 Kings Fork @ Indian River 

Well 2-5 are all pretty close but looking at the records I think the 6 are set with IR as the 6 seed. I don't see the bottom 3 catching up. 

From the standings above, wouldn't Oscar Smith be the 6th Seed?

 

They are 7-9 and IR is 3-11??  I guess I should ask what are the conference records?

I must be missing something...I think OS will be the sixth seed. IR would have to win out (using the current team records) to even their record with OS and they still have to play WB one more time.

If GB beats GF and WB beats Hickory and they all win thier other games there will be 3 teams at 12-4.

 

If memory is right GF beat WB twice and WB will have beaten Hikory twice and everyone lost to GB twice.

 

Then what?  Coin flip for 2nd place? 

I heard they pick numbers out of a hat.

 Really?  Wow!  That 2 seed could be huge to get to the Regional.

I think they flip a coin to see who gets to pick the number(s) out of the hat.

THAT would be too funny!

I just saw that Great Bridge is ranked #22 out of the top 25 high school baseball teams in the country, according to Baseball America.    Nice to see a Virginia school listed!

Great Bridge scored 1 run in the first inning on a D.Smith leadoff HBP and a double by T.Lane.  They got 2 more in the 2nd on a HR by G.Barcliff, single by C.Higgerson and a triple by D.Smith.  Their fourth run was from two singles by C.Higgerson and L.Harrelson and after they moved up one base, a squeeze bunt by C.Hinkle.

 

Grassfield had their only threat in the 5th inning, when with two outs, they got a single and an error to put runners on the corners, but the rally ended with a comebacker (1-3) putout.

 

Shutout pitching from 3 GB pitchers was enough to secure the win.

What do you mean by "closing out".... It was 19-0. In that case seems has if they never had a chance of closing anything.  Going to be interesting to see who ends up finishing 4th. If Hickory and GF win on Friday it would stay the way it is now and you get to see a WB vs. NR then winner would have to play GB! That is one tough road to ODU!!!

Yea they never could get it together this year.  Losing that many sure takes it toll on a club.

no.... Hickory loses then they become 13-4 and WB would be 14-4 and depending on a GF win that would make them 14-4. So that would make it a two way tie for second place. Grassfield beat WB twice during the regular season.

I see old fashioned GB dogma survives for a 2nd and 3rd 1 out tack on run as they run the squeeze instead of swinging away for the knockout up 3-0 in the middle of the game. They've been playing like that for 25-30 years. 

 

It is the kind of thing they will need to execute somewhere along the way in a 1-2 run game if they are going to make the deep run at the Regional/State tournaments.

       

       

Hickory has a make up game Monday against Lakeland. If they lose to WB one can safely assume they will beat Lakeland finishing at 14-4.

Fridays game WB at Hickory is going to be a good one! I would imagine Eason will throw for hickory and rutherford for WB?

One SED coach told me that if WB beats Hickory then it will be a three way tie if Hickory beats Lakeland on Monday!  Haven't seen Lakeland this year but looking at the records that might not be a stretch.

I don't know about Lakeland beating hickory. But the WB and hickory game tomorrow night should be fun to watch especially if the teams are both playing sound baseball

Whats going on today!!!! I know Conner pitched Tuesday against GF, so he won't being throwing today, but is Zach Rice starting for NR today. It is Senior Day for those guys and it would give them the opportunity of keeping it close and having a chance to win. 

I heard Z. Rice is shut down for the remainder of the year (at least from pitching).  

Can't think of any reason why Logan Harrelson wouldn't get his weekly start as usual.
