Congrats to OS. Two very impressive wins over two very good SED teams. Both wins must have been very exciting (and rewarding) for all OS fans, parents and players! Will OS make the playoffs?

Second, if my math calculations are correct, the winner of Hickory-Western Branch on Thursday will either be the outright district winner or tied with Nansemond River for first place. Will there be a playoff game?

Third, would have thought that GB would have saved their number one for their toughest game of week, NR at GB, on Friday (unless GB intends to pitch C. Jones on short rest). Will GB lose for the second consecutive year on senior night?

Any idea who pitched for Hickory? That 11 concerns me.

Sketchy report from a source: Spencer Carter pitched first 2 innings and the score was 9-0 Hickory at the end of those 2 innings. Best pitched the 3rd. 5 King's Fork runs scored in that inning. There was a Hickory error in the 3rd. Then Campbell pitched and King's Fork was hitting the ball. After Campbell, Zach York pitched and walked a lot of batters. Leach pitched the 7th and did a good job. Surprise, surprise. Blake did not pitch.

So Carter pitched 2 innings and got the win?

Now I'm concerned with Hickory's relief pitching. Best and Campbell have not been effective this season. Hickory's been able to survive off of many complete games from their starters.

The 2 relief pitchers that have done well this season are Leach and Chandler. Chandler broke his wrist last week against Grassfield...and out for the remainder of the season.

We're back to the same topic that we had before the season started. It will be interesting to see how far the starting pitching will carry them in the play-offs.

Western Branch over Hickory. 5-1

Western Branch looked like they were playing for a piece of the SED Championship.

Ryan Bennett, who pitched the complete game for WB, walked Hickory’s first batter of the game, Matt Campbell. Three batters later, Christian Lowery singled over second to bring Campbell home for Hickory’s only run of the night. WB’s first batter of the game, Garrett Brooks, also reached first (via a single), advanced to second on the perennial bunt by Kyle McPherson, and reached third on a wild pitch but was left stranded there. End of 1, Hickory 1, Western Branch 0.

In the 2nd inning, Bennett retired the Hickory batters and 2 WB batters reached (Bobby Barefoot with a single and Patrick Avery with a walk) but they were left on base. End of 2, Hickory 1, Western Branch 0.

In the 3rd inning, Campbell led off for Hickory with an infield single and stole second. However, Grant Maiorana, WB’s catcher, threw Campbell out attempting to steal third, for the 3rd out of the inning. Western Branch tied it up in the 3rd. Garrett Brooks led off with a single, stole 2nd, advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly by Shane Johnsonbaugh. End of 3, tied at 1 each.

The 4th inning belonged to Western Branch, particularly its seniors on Senior Night. Bennett (a senior) made quick work, retiring Hickory in order with 7 pitches. On offense, Bobby Barefoot (a senior) once again led off an inning with a single. Barefoot advanced to 2nd on a pb, to 3rd on Zach Rutherford’s single and came home on Maiorana’s single. With Rutherford and Maiorana on base, both Matthew Roth and Brooks walked. Then with 2 outs and bases loaded, Shane Johnsonbaugh (a senior) hit a double bringing home Maiorana and Roth. End of 4, WB 5, Hickory 1.

In the 5th inning, Hickory showed they still had fight in them. Spencer Carter led off the inning with a single. Two batters later, with one out, Jake Tandy, batting in the 9-hole, laid down a gorgeous bunt for a single. Bennett, though, got the top two of Hickory’s order out with 3 pitches. Blake, pitching for Hickory, retired Western Branch in order, striking out 2. End of 5, WB 5, Hickory 1.

In the 6th, with 1 out, Lowery lined a single up the middle for his second hit of the evening. (The ball passed close enough by Bennett's head that he must have felt the breeze.) The next batter, though, grounded into a well-turned 5-4-3 double play. Connor Eason took the mound for Hickory (after having thrown a lot on Monday against Deep Creek). WB’s Maiorana, one of Eason’s former travel teammates, hit a long single to right center for his second hit of the game. The next batter, Matthew Roth, another of Maiorana and Eason’s former travel teammates, K’d when he bunted foul with 2 strikes. With 2 outs, and Western Branch at the top of the order, Brooks hit a slow roller towards 3rd. Tandy, playing 3rd, made a REALLY nice play to throw Brooks out at first. End of 6, WB 5, Hickory 1.

In the top of the 7th, Hickory continued to battle. With 1 out, Carter hit his 2nd single of the night, advanced to 2nd on a ground out and advanced to 3rd when Tandy reached because WB’s first baseman was ruled off the bag. After 2 balls, WB intentionally walked Campbell to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate. With a 2-2 count, Tyler Best hit a long fly out to center field to end the game.

Hickory Hitting:
Campbell 1-2, BB, 1 run
Lowery 2-3
Zach Neice 1-3
Carter 2-3, RBI
Tandy 1-3

WB Hitting:
Brooks 2-3, 1 run, RBI, BB
Johnsonbaugh 1-2 (2B), Sac, 3 rbis
Barefoot 2-3, 1 run
Zach Rutherford 1-3, 1 run
Maiorana 2-3, run, RBI
Matthew Roth, BB, 1 run

Virginian Pilot states that Western Branch will play Nansemond River Tuesday, May 15 for the automatic berth to the Eastern Regionals if Nansemond River defeats Great Bridge tonight.

What's the 2nd place tie-breaker if NR were to lose to GB, and therefore be tied with Hickory for 2nd? They are 2-0 against Hickory, but not sure if the tie-breaker goes head to head.

I heard that the coaches had "drawings" at the preseason coaches' meeting to determine seedings in the event of a tie. I know that does not apply to one seed because of the berth to the Eastern Regionals. I wonder if it would have applied to the 6th seed because that would put one team in and one team out of the playoffs.
OSCAR SMITH SCOREKEEPER COMMENTS:
(Definitely not how I envisioned this season ending!)

IR: 0 - 0 - 3 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 4 // 8 - 10 - 3
OS: 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 3 - 0 - 1 // 4 - 6 - 1
WP: White LP: Lex
HR: Hall (IR)

No scoring until the TOP of the 3rd inning. After 2 consecutive strikeouts to start the inning, Oscar Smith starter Logan Lex suddenly has control issues and issues a 4-pitch walk to 2-hole hitter Robert White. Roger Hall follows with a deep shot to CF that the OS CF twists a couple of times trying to figure out, but the ball gets over his head for a double that scores White. Hall gets wild pitched to 3B & AJ Hunt follows with a 5-pitch walk. He steals 2B & Ismael Montes barely beats out a slow roller to SS to score Hall.

With 2 outs & a 2-2 count on Conner Inskeep, the ball hits the catcher’s glove but still gets by to the backstop, scoring the 3rd run of the inning. After Inskeep walks, Thomas Packert replaces Lex on the mound... 3-0 IR

TOP of 5th: Robert White & Roger Hall lead off the inning with clean singles. AJ Hunt goes down on strikes; then, with a 0-2 count, Packert hits Montes to load the bases. Inskeep follows with a sac fly to left, scoring White, before Jacob Spry goes down on strikes to end the inning... 4-0 IR

BOTTOM of 5th: As they have been doing for the past week, Oscar Smith battles back. On Senior Night, Senior Jarrett McNeil singles to start the inning & moves to 2B on a blocked wild pitch. Packert then fails to sac bunt the runner, striking out in the process. Tyler Ennis walks; Daniel Barnett lays down a nice bunt that pitcher Robert White fields tries to make a play, but the ball tips off of the 2nd Baseman's glove, putting Barnett on and scoring McNeil. With runners on 1st & 3rd, Jae Damewood hits a groundball to SS. IR tries to turn two, but Damewood beats the throw, allowing Ennis to score.

David Loudon & Stephen Lorkiewicz both draw walks, loading the bases. Then, Conner Smith fights a 1-2 pitch into the hole at SS that he legs out for an infield RBI-single. Remy Johnston grounds into a force to end the inning... 4-3 IR.

6th INNING: Neither team scores.

TOP of 7th: Things fall apart for OS. Senior Roger Hall starts the inning off by driving a 1-0 fastball over the CF fence for a leadoff HR. AJ Hunt follows with a groundball that is misplayed at 3B. Montes singles to CF, putting runners at 1st & 2nd. Inskeep follows with a bunt that Packert fields, throws to 1B, but the 2B was late to the bag, loading the bases.

With no outs & the infield in, Jacob Spry hits a ground ball that gets through up the middle, scoring 2 runs & leaving runners at 1st & 3rd. Darien Redd then gets a suicide squeeze bunt down, scratching across that all-important 8th run to go up by 5. On the play, the pitcher Packert threw home well late, allowing Redd to reach, putting runners at 1st & 2nd with still no outs. Tyler Fain then grounds into a 6-4-3 DP & Nick Milvo goes down swinging to end the inning... 8-3 IR.

BOTTOM of 7th: Again, the Tigers try to put up a fight. Daniel Barnett leads off with a single to RF. Jae Damewood grounds a 3-1 pitch to SS, but beats out the double play. David Loudon follows with a walk, putting runners at 1st & 2nd.

Roger Hall replaces Robert White on the mound. Stephen Lorkiewicz works into a full count, fouls off a tough pitch, but then goes down looking for the 2nd out.

During Conner Smith's at-bat, catcher Milvo throws behind Damewood at 2B, but throws the ball into CF. Damewood heads for 3B & Loudon heads for 2B... the ball goes to 2B. Loudon gets into a rundown, beats the throw back to 1B & Damewood beats the throw home.

Smith eventually hits a ball up the middle that SS AJ Hunt gets to but Smith beats out for another infield single. With runners at 1B & 2B, Remy Johnston goes down looking to end the game.

KEYS TO THE GAME: Senior Roger Hall was huge for IR at the plate tonight. Indian River got base-hits with runners in scoring position & with 2 outs... Smith didn't... that was one of the big differences tonight. Smith didn't help themselves with passed balls, a key error and blown bunt coverages. IR was the better team tonight and they are a very dangerous team heading into the district playoffs.

That is a terrible way to determine a tie-break situation. If you're not going to have a playoff common sense should dictate that head to head would be the first tie break and "drawings" the second. Otherwise, why play a regular season? Just roshambo your way to the seedings.

GB 2R 6H 3E

Pitching Lines
NR

GB
D.Smith 2-4, 2b
C.Cody 2-3, bb
A.Owens 1-3
Con.Jones 1-3

NR scored 2 runs in the 3rd on a 2-run double by T.Johnson and then 4 more in the 5th to chase B.Beard. A combinatin of bb, bb, 1b, 2b, e3, bb and a sac fly plated 4 runs. (I scored the e3 on a play when the first baseman failed to cover the bag on a groundball to second leaving all runner safe).

GB scored 2 in the 5th on a single, fc (e4 throwing the ball away), ground out, 2b and 1b. That was all GB would do tonight as they played most of their seniors in the field and let them bat.

NR plated 3 more in the seventh with a combination of bb, 1b, bb, sac fly, e4 (dropped pop-up), 1b, k, bb and k.

With GB not having anything to gain from the game whether they won or lost, it was reflected in their play some innings. NR had more to gain and played like it. Congrats to NR for earning a shot at the regular season title via a one-game playoff with Western Branch.

District Tournament should be a great one.

Go Dawgs, I am sure you can add more.
