Nansemond River 1R 7H 0E 5LOB
Grassfield 0R 3H 0E 2LOB

What a game. It was clear to everyone early that runs would be at a premium in this game. Both coaches were aggressive when they got men on base. In the 3rd inning Grassfield leadoff hitter Donnie Read drew a 2 out walk. The next batter, CF Ryan Burmeister, hit a line drive in the right centerfield gap. Read tried to advance to 3rd on the hit and was gunned down by Ryan O'Hara for the 3rd out.

In the top of the 4th Josh Howard led off with a single and was caught stealing. Zach Vann then singled his courtesy runner Trevor Riggs was caught stealing the second runner thrown out by Grassfield catcher Ellis. In the bottom of the Ellis led of with his second hit of the game. Ellis stole second but was thrown out at 3rd when catcher Zach Vann blocked a pitch in the dirt and threw a dart to 3B Blake Eure to cut down Ellis. Grassfield never threatened again as starting pitcher Howard retired 9 straight batters.

The lone run of the game came in the top of the 6th. Blake Eure led off with a single and was moved to 2B on a sac bunt by Tyler Brown. Josh Howard laced a liner up the middle that scored Eure.

RESPONSE TO OSBBParent:

Unbelievable ... for any OS parent who comments on this message board in this way is irreprehensible! As an OS alumni & baseball parent, I have frustrations for the team not winning but I, on the other hand, place the blame on those who play the game ... not the coach! Coach Bowles came to OS with a proven successful IR JV program background that involved total parental support & player development resulting in team unity & superior achievements due to their ability to learn & then implement his instructions. In addition, he has the respect of his fellow coaches ... just ask any one of them.

He took over a team who had 1 win in 2 seasons and made them winners of 5 games last season. As stated by my3sonsaz, he then coached an American Legion team to the Virginia State championship (at Danville VA, going 6 & 1) & Mid-Atlantic Regional championship (at West Lawn PA - going 5-0 which is a rare feat) and finished 7th at the the World Series (in Spokane WA)... a feat never before accomplished by Chesapeake Post 280! I think that his coaching credentials speak for themselves!!!

A players failure to take responsibility for their play is a reflection of a parents failure to acknowledge the same. Self-worth, moral values & accountability should be things that are learned from their parents by the examples they set for their children.

Bottom line, a HS coach ... any HS coach ... is totally reliant on: (1) a player's knowledge of basic fundamentals; (2) pure baseball talent; (3) development + improvement accomplished through absorbing & executing sound instructional methods; (4) an individual's attitude; (5) and team player comraderie. Team results are a testimony to the individual player's ability to conform & play well in a group environment PLUS be respectful of your coach & fellow team mates.

OSBBParent is shamefully irresponsible & thoughtless in this case ... an incredibly detrimental embarassment/disgrace to the entire OS community that is not prevelant amongst other parents at all! Thanks so very much for your individual display of disrespect, insubordination & total lack of support ... it's definitely NOT appreciated by this alumni!!!

I think for people to say that Oscar Smith is loosing because of Coach Bowles is crazy and shows a real lack of knowledge. All you have to do is look at what he did with Greenbrier Post 280 to see the guy can coach. He guided that team to heights very few teams get to play. There are many reasons for a team to have an unsuccessful/successful season, health, chemestry, luck, etc.. If you are going to be critical of a coach, you should look at the entire picture. I think we can all agree Larry did a fantastic job with Smith last year and a guy doesn't to forget how to coach overnight.

just playing devil's advocate here but one successful summer doesn't constitute a proven track record... just saying....

With a stacked all-star team, they should have done well. AMEN Brother.

Hey BigPapi76, please let us hear all about your bonifide coaching credentials & resume ... I think we deserve that much! Then, and only then, can you qualify to offer validated testimony about another coaches abilities or inabilities ... otherwise, your opinion & credibility can be questioned on any and every level!

I've coached just as much as ofs10 has which qualified him to call out Coach Todd of GF earlier today! using words like disgraceful and egregious... I am neutral to this discussion and I knew my post would strike a nerve but I felt I had to post to prove a point.... how is it that in the same day OS can blast GF head coach but are all in arms when someone blasts OS head coach?
Some coaches flourish as game day coaches. They make all the right decisions at the right moment.

Some coaches specialize in mechanics and footwork.

Some coaches are successful teachers and leaders.

The best head coaches incorporate all of these traits.

To be a successful head coach you must have just one. The leadership trait. But you MUST recognize any weakness that you have and surround yourself with assistants that specialize in the other 2.

Any program that is weak in just one of these traits will be mediocre at best.
