I may be a little optimistic but I think that they'll sneak up on some other teams. The pitching will be better than expected and they've got decent bats and a better-than-average defense.

They would have won more last year if TJ was available to pitch earlier.

We'll see. I hope that I'm right. We've already been round and round with this, no need to rehash it. Looking forward to the season.
For Hickory to win 14 district games they'd have to beat everyone twice excluding GB, WB and NR and go 2-4 against that group. That is not a ridiculas possibility but it does represent a level of consistency that they have not demonstrated in the past. It also assumes some pretty good growth from underclassmen and returning players. It would definately be a nice stride forward there and make the race in the district much more interesting.
The SR classes at NR and GB have been battling each other fairly evenly since they were 10. As it has for the last several seasons the title will turn on head to head battles and if someone loses a to a spoiler. Last year GF with Ingrahm was that guy that could change a season which is what happened when beat NR early and put them behind WB and GB for the district the rest of the way.

Based on the 2012 schedule we'll find out pretty early if Hickory will make it a 4 team race as they play GB and NR in their 2nd and 3rd games of the season.

The next key segment looks like WB playing GB and NR back to back on a Friday/Tuesday on March 30 and April 3.

Only about 90 days to the first game.
If you look at GB's schedule it lines up to be favorable for them. In the first half, the stronger teams are lined up on the Friday games with the weaker teams assigned for Tuesday. There is no week that they will be significantly challenged back to back. It flip flops for the second half. This gives GB an advantage, since they don't have to face 2 strong teams in the same week.

The other teams are faced with challenging weeks of facing 2 strong teams back to back.

Of course, the weather will undoubtedly play a role somewhat.

You're right. But show me where Great Bridge has a tough challenge back to back. They're lined up to be able to use Connor Jones against every team that is expected to compete.

However, I doubt that he'll go undefeated. He'll have an off night or two somewhere. That's why we play the game.
I think one varible that hasnt been mention often is the loss of Lee and his pitching coach (along with coach Grissom) Lee knew his players and how to get the most out of them. While townsend coached (was being groomed) 3rd in place of lee, he still isnt Lee. Townsen's decisions will effect those games (without lee in the dugout?) may reflect different outcomes than GB is use too. Lee knew what to do in those situations, while townsend may also - I wonder much of a learning curve he will have?

Sean will be just fine. He knows the game well and relates to the kids. Coach Lee didn't do anything earthshattering. He put kids in position to be successful. That's what good coaches do.

Couldn't agree more GB always has a solid stable of talent. And don't think anyone on here could question Coach Sean's pedigree. I think it would be safe to say he is quite familiar with situational baseball. Looking forward to what should be a very competitve SE season!!
Guys,

The discussion I was alluding to is that whenever you have a change at the top, like any business, things are never (exactly) the same. There is no question about Townsend's pedigree, the environment that he was raised in, nor his last mentor; coupled with the fact that he has been (assisting) coaching a championship team that he is familiar with makes it (at least to me) obvious that Townsend will be just fine. Additionally, he has an assortment of very talented kids and a pipe line to ensure success for years to come. That being said, my point of discussion is with the slight change that MAY effect some level of the game.
