Hi Dad -
First of all, welcome to the HSBBWeb site. You have found an excellent resource to help guide you and your son through the next few years of what will be an exciting journey. There are some very knowledgable folks on here who can answer nearly any question you may have.

As for the So. MD Camp....I think my son first went at 14, but I have to say that might be a little early. However, I wanted my son to go so he would get used to the showcase environment and to see how good some of the other players really were. From the first camp, he came away with a much better sense of how hard he would have to work if he truly wanted to be successful. The camp isn't cheap, but if you can afford it and those seem like good reasons...then, you may want to consider. I will tell you this - Jerry Wargo (who runs the camp) is a first class guy and he has some great college coaches there instructing and observing. You might give him a call and see what he says.

Over the next few years, as your son progresses, you will switch from seeking instruction at this camp to gaining exposure and being seen. This is a very good camp for that.

The summer camp is outside and the winter camp is inside. If your son is a pitcher, both camps are great....with the winter camp possibly being a little stronger. If you son is a position player, the summer camp may be a little better as they are outside. Although, the recent move a couple of years ago the the AACS facility really improved the winter camp for the position players.

Finally, another good part of the So. MD Camp is that parents get to stay 'close to the action' so you can hear what your son is being told and can re-inforce those things after the camp. I always appreciated that and considered that a huge benefit. Sort of allowed me to go to camp, too.

Overall...top notch camp...practically in your backyard, too!

Just my thoughts. Again, welcome!

Glad to hear prices might be getting coming down.

I base my comment on $35-50 per half hour for instruction.....$50+ per hour for cage time. Maybe more competition/overall economy has softened the demand for the indoor facilities.

Be careful with your offer....you might have a few takers.

Back to the original post...I stand by what I said previously about the So MD Camp. Jerry Wargo runs a darn good camp. Whether the original poster should send his son at age 14.....personal decision. Just trying to offer up my perspective and opinion.
Yeah we signed him up. 35O Dollars doesnt seem to be that bad for 3 days. I did want to sign him up so he could see how much he needs to work to get where he wants. Do they put the freshmen together only or do they put all high schoolers together wearing different shirts or something? He is mainly a pitcher/outfielder. Plays a little 1st base.
They will split the high school players up by class with each class (Frosh, Soph, Junior, Senior) wearing a different color jersey with the players name on the back to identify them.

If you can, set aside time to stay at the camp with your son. You will learn a lot. Again, give Jerry a call with any questions you may have. His number is on the website, I'm sure.
#22's dad...

First of all "Congratulations" on finding this excellent baseball site where so many wonderful, caring folks offer their knowledge and/or experiences to people like you and I whom simply ask questions about the 6 w's of baseball... who, what, when, where, why & how.

The Southern Maryland Baseball Camp is one of the top camps on the entire East Coast... if not the BEST! Jerry Wargo, SOMD Baseball Director, is a professional baseball scout with excellent resources which guarantees a player the very best instruction today. We know first hand as our son attended 5 SOMD camps and "always" wanted to go back. I enjoyed hearing him say "dad, I learned a lot today and it was fun".

You mention your son is 14, that's a perfect age to get him started in these camps. Your son will get quality baseball instruction, an informal education by his guest speakers and an experience of a lifetime as your player learns the proper fundamentals of the game.

Attending the camps, you will see marginal players whom will greatly improve during the camp and you will see top talented players which your son (and you) will learn first hand where your game stands today and/or where you need to be down the hs road in baseball.

College coaches, pro scouts and other knowledgeable instructors will give your player 100% instruction and a great time in all. If your player truly enjoys the game of baseball, he will ask you on the way home at the end of camp "dad, can I come back to this camp next summer"?

Lets also not forget the words of Bob Howdeshell... you never know who's watching you"!

Your great camp questions are exactly how and why "The World Famous HS Baseball Web" was started by our founder and good friend Bob Howdeshell of Tennessee.

Bob told me years ago that he asked many similar questions and sometimes they were answered and many times more information would have been kindly appreciated.

After the first original hs baseball sight had started, I asked a few questions then later sent Bob a private message asking for his phone number. I sincerely wanted to personally tell him "thank you" for his time of creating the site and valuable information provided for all to learn. I also told Bob that day that he has created an informational baseball site for the young player, parents and coaches that is the very best informational source to be found anywhere on the world wide internet and that he has started "something really big". Boy, did this site grow through the years...

** and a very special "thank you" to MN-Mom for keeping this site alive and growing better and better each time another family signs on as a "new webster".

Good luck to your son dad...
