Great site guys...very informative and without the personal nonsense of other message boards. I'm a new poster looking for input on the split finger fastball. I know that there are detractors (Tommy Lasorda) but have yet to find any conclusive data on the perils of such a pitch. Aside from growth plate issues respecting the index and middle fingers, has anyone come across any further medical opinions? Your input would be greatly appreciated.

No--especially because the pitch can be thrown in terms of a changeup with minor drop, or thrown as to induce asteep falling drop. In other words, the ball resting between the fingers and thrown directly over the top without much snap will still yield an effective changeup.

Bottom line is to consider the age of the kid throwing it. Young men can handle some pressure on muscles and ligaments; young kids under 12 cannot.
