What he did: Threw a one-hit shutout Tuesday against Euless Trinity to clinch third in District 6-5A, putting Irving in the playoffs for the first time since 1999. He had 15 strikeouts, including eight of Trinity's final nine batters, and no walks. He also broke a 0-0 tie with an RBI single in the fifth inning.
Blake Beavan The stats: He is 8-1 with an 0.36 ERA, the lowest of any area Class 5A pitcher. He has 99 strikeouts, 24 hits allowed and 12 walks in 58 1/3 innings. He leads the team with a .385 batting average and 16 RBIs.
Who is he? Beavan is a 6-7, 210-pound right-hander considered one of the nation's premier junior pitchers. He plays shortstop when he isn't pitching.
He said it: "I wanted to get Irving into the playoffs. I went out there with the same mind-set I've had all year. I wanted to strike everybody out, but I had a good defense that picked me up when they did hit the ball."
Coach said it: "It was really fun to watch him switch gears. The first four innings, he was just throwing fastballs and sliders. Then in the fifth inning, he broke out his curveball. They really didn't have a shot after that." – Brett Parham
Did you know? Beavan would have competed to start at quarterback for Irving last season, but he decided to give up football to concentrate on baseball. ... Enjoys hanging out with his teammates in the country on weekends. They play paintball and "go muddin'" in their trucks.
