I do not mind being corrected, but I do agree that TR did not have to state what he did. I apologize for the confusion he may have had.

But just to clarify I did mention Johnson City in my pervious post.

All first year players are rookies, a rookie is a rookie, I think that we have had that discussion before. Not all "rookies" end up at the same place, and I was talking about HS "rookies". Using the term rookie/low A just distinguishes one from another for lower league purposes for competition. Some teams don't even have "rookie" teams other than complex ball. They go from complex ball to low A.

The point I WAS trying to make was that before considering signing out of HS, find out what and how many levels the team has, some players end up two years in complex ball because there is no "rookie A" level above complex ball, some don't even have low A.

This is spring training and the players are not paid.
Extended spring training starts April when all the other players brake camp and go to their assigned teams. and some stay behind in extended. Then in June you can go to short season club or rookie ball at the complex....even low A

For many hs players its draft, rookie (complex ball) instructs, spring training, extended spring training, short season, instructs, spring training, Low A ball..etc.

20dad,
Did your son stya back in extended last year. njbb is correct, no one gets paid for spring training, and all teams do things differently. Mine gets 2 meals per day (plus room) and meal money for dinner. $175 per week if you live out of hotel plus money for one meal per two (they give you two).
Once regular spring training ends I was under the impression everyone gets weekly pay, assigned to team or remaining in extended.

But boy, it seems so complicated!

It does, but it's really not, once you understand what some of the terms really mean and how they are used.

A 'short season team' is a team that is formed subsequent to the draft to play a 'short season' from about a week or so after the draft until the end of the season around 8/31-9/07.

But, a short season team is not made up entirely of 'draftees'. Players could be moved down from an A 'full season' team, or up, from an 'extended spring training' team, for example.

That is how MLB handles the influx of players that sign after the draft.

Extended spring training teams continue at the 'complexes' where the teams hold their spring training.

Teams are formed out of the extended spring training group also play a 'short season' against other minor league teams after the draft.

I think the term 'rookie' league adds to the confusion because most people assign that term to a player and not a team, or league.

But, the 'rookie' teams are made up of relatively new players.

A 'rookie' player might be assigned to any level of play depeding on what the experience level of the player is and the needs of the organization.

This is what I was trying to explain before being called out. For example, Twins have a "rookie" team (Elizabethton) then go to "mid A" (Beloit), which is really low A, then to High A. There is no short season, there is no "low A" classification, players designated to "rookie" might be in ss or low A on another team. That might mean a young player will spend, possibly 2 years in GLC complex "rookie" ball. Complex ball is not usually "fan" orientated.
Understand when drafted by a team where you will spend a few years.

If you do the math the odds become enormous. There are 25 men on a roster and 30 teams. That translates to 750 possible spots in each classification. Now factor in all the foriegn players from places like Japan, Korea, China, Australia, the Caribean, Central America, Canada, etc and the competiton is mind boggling. Just to make it to AA means you are one of the best 2250+/- players in the world! Don't forget that injuries and luck also play an enormous part in moving up.

That's why you need to get an education.
OK, Right now here's the drill the kids are going through.
They started playing regular Spring Training games against other teams in the area on March 18th. For example A+ Red Sox v. Twins A+ group. A v. A. and so on. The AAA & AA guys will travel and the A+ & A guys play at home complex. There will be a few "Camp Days" ( No games, but workouts) but mostly they play a game daily. They will usally get to the complex about 7-8AM....lift, stretch, workout, BP, drills etc. Lunch at 12PM Game at 1PM.
This schedule will go on until April 4th at which time they will finally find where they will be assigned.

I said nothing out of order ---TPM was wrong and all I said was do your homework as I an others dobefore we we post---she made a statement that was erroneous as shown by following posts---people correct me--is it wrong for me to do the same--in fact recent posters have insinuated things about me but so what---this is cyberland---I can stand on my own

Why is it people cannot take criticism as it is handed out?---I can , I know that---

Here's some criticism for you right here.

You should have kept your mouth shut.

You constantly badger many posters including TPM.

You are continually out of line on this board.

This board is constantly having this same issue with you.

You have become Andy.

Or, was that you all along?

You are not different than Eye, Pic, or notroll.

You offer the same intellect.

You need to be banned.

Just as they were.

You never had much credibility and, what little you had, has been completely destroyed.

Who appointed you as the critic?

You have no reason to be telling anyone to do their homework.

Your post in this thread served no purpose other than to bait TPM on an insignificant issue.

Don't post in this thread. You have nothing useful to offer here.

Your post was entirely out of order.

You "just don't get it'"

raiders, no one comes on here to be criticized.

This site is not about those who can criticize, those who can take it, and those who cannot.

And, those who criticize, whether right or wrong, in an incitefull (no I don't mean insightfull) way don't need to be tolerated.

Your comment offered nothing to the content of this thread that was interesting or useful.

Your post is a prime example of what should not be tolerated and it has been referred to a moderator.

I'd welcome Bighit's input.

Just trying to get us back on track with the post which should be reports on how 'OUR' boys are all doing at spring training. We know the odds are staggering and every organization seems to be a little different and that is great for a whole other thread or two.

I'd just like to hear things about what they are doing. Helps me feel closer and more connected to mine 900 something miles away. I really wish I could figure out who all have son's playing pro ball both Milb and Majors. I need like an actual list. I'm not sure it that exists here or not. I'd like to know who to watch and cheer for.
me boy caught for los yankis today said he got two rbi's in his text message. but who did he catch and I have so many more questions that he doesn't have time to answer sure wish I could go to spring training. tell me as much as you can of what ya'll saw in the games.I've seen alot of good texas H.S. baseball but its not the same as rootin' for your own team. What are the chances that, that picture posted by JerseyDad of son pitching and hitting also has my son catching. THANKS JerseyDad

Just got back from seeing son at st. Good weather, great time watching minor league games against the Red Sox, Tampa Bay and the Reds. Got to watch son throw one inning. He’s throwing with no pain which is a God send. Velocity isn’t where it needs to be, but he’s throwing strikes. He did okay but I could tell he wasn’t throwing with much intensity and not really finishing his pitches. I think he was still anxious about cutting it loose after what he's been through with the labrum surgery and all. We talked about it, showed him a little video of his inning which was great feedback for him. They video tape the pitchers but haven't shown it to them. I told him he needs to ask to see them.

He threw two innings Sunday and did much better. Velocity was up a couple MPH. Gave up one seeing eye single, five groundouts and one K, no runs, no walks. Coaches told him that was the best they had seen him in two years. Good late sink on the fastball. Slider and changeup were good. I guess it helped to have ole dad who had seen him since he first held a baseball to give a little advice. Wink NOTE: The advice was in our hotel room after his first outing later that night so NO I’m not one of those dads.

That said, he’s still not out of the woods. There are a ton of players trying to make a few teams. As Hoovmom 15 says, “the odds are staggering”.

Here’s wishing all our boys well.

P.S. Watched practice one day with all the minor leaguers. Interesting to say the least. Even actually heard some occasional English being spoken. Eek

Frank,
Thank you for posting about your visit to ST and seeing Josh back on the mound.
To know what Josh has experienced to get to this point leaves me with admiration beyond what I can write. These days have to be a source of such pride and gratification for each of you, because there were many days you didn't know these would happen again.
I will cheer for Josh and hope his success and opportunities continue, for reasons I think you know.
Your son is doing what they teach in MLB...control what you can and be prepared when you opportunity arises.
Josh had a lot more to control than most.
I think the best I can say is
