My son usually fields lights out. However, he is unsure of how he should approach a bouncing ball to his glove side.
When he makes an error it is almost always on his glove side and on a bouncing ground ball.
Can be hard hit or softly hit.
The ball tends to hit off the heal of his glove.
It happened this week where the ball was hit up the middle for an obvious DP. It bounced off the heel of his glove on an in between hop because he says he was trying to take a better angle to the bag for the DP. Should he just come around and in on the ball to get it on the short hop knowing that in all likelihood it would be a tough flip to turn two or just take the out at first and charge the ball.
I have always told him to come in on the ball to get the easy hop no matter what. It was a huge situation and I feel he was just trying to do too much rather than take the sure out.
He did a very similar thing early in the game where he stayed back to get a force at second and again he took the in between hop off the heel of his glove.
Up to this game it had been a long time between errors.
He was really bummed. Felt he should have made the play and that he cost his team the game.
Thanks, Bill
