DULUTH, Minn. (AP)—John Baggs, the coach who built the College of St. Scholastica into a Division III baseball power, died Tuesday. He was 42.

He had cancer for four months, the school said.

Baggs was hired by the college in 1991 when he was 24. The Saints won 12 straight Upper Midwest Athletic Conference titles and lost in the NCAA Midwest Regional finals last season. Baggs had a career record of 531-197 in 17 seasons.

St. Scholastica athletic director Don Olson said Baggs “truly represented the best of St. Scholastica’s tradition in athletics.”

The team chose to play its scheduled doubleheader Tuesday night against Wisconsin-La Crosse at the Metrodome

Quite a career for a very young man.

This is so sad. Starting as a head coach at age 24, building a national DIII power, and having his life end at such an early age.
DIII baseball has many great coaches who are wonderful leaders of people. I would guess Coach Baggs is one.
Hopefully, his players will be able to manage this loss and perform with the pride and effort with which Coach Baggs lived his life. Hopefully his life will be an inspiration for years to come.
