Big game Friday night. St Thomas vs. Nova. Gallagher vs. Swarzak. McFadden will be there. Two of the top teams in 5A. I will try to be there to watch. Who do you think will win?
I personally hope Nova whips them. St. Thomas backed out of game vs Coral Springs last week, claims they never had it on the schedule. Yeah right! All these teams have great pitching, good players. However up against a 6A district team they have trouble, their records are so good because they play weaker teams. After all, didn't Taravella prove that a few weeks ago?
In my mind Taravella's win proved 2 things neither of which has anything to do with the numerical classification of the schools:
1. When you have two outstanding high school pitchers facing off the team that hits timely and makes the fewest errors is likely to win; and,
2. This is a great season to be a high school baseball fan in Broward County. Consider: 5A Nova beat 5A Cooper City twice; 5A Cooper City beat 6A Douglas twice; 6A Douglas beat 6A Taravella twice; and 6A Taravella beat 5A Nova.... Or, coming from a different direction, 3A Chaminade which is sub-.500 and in last place in its 3A district recently defeated Douglas which was 9-0 in its 6A district (the district which includes both Taravella and Coral Springs.) In fact and fairness, Chaminade is a good high school baseball team (as are all the teams mentioned here) and its deceptive record may be the result of playing in what is at least arguably among the most competitive districts in the state despite the small population of the member schools. (District also includes Monsignor Pace, American Heritage Plantation and Archbishop McCarthy.) Bottom line, this year, perhaps more so than most, nobody can afford to take a day off school size notwithstanding.
As for the match-up of Messrs. Gallagher and Swarzek, um ... well... the team that hits timely and makes the fewest errors is likely to win. And, as much as I too would like to see it, I would be surprised if it happens this Friday.
Fabeets, You are so correct! A perfect example is Taravella (ranked 7)loses to Coral Springs (unranked), now with Coral Springs possibly moving into the 2nd spot in district 6A.
That's why we love the game of baseball, you just never know what is going to happen.
I hope everyone is enjoying the season, because it will be a long time before anyone sees such outstanding pitching again.
When Taravella beat Nova I put the credit right where it belonged. On the other pitchers in our district. We knew that after facing Dave Kopp 3 times and Mickey Storey 2 times and Mike McCalla 2 times that we had faced quality pitchers that were in the same arena as Swarzak. (Who I believe is the real deal) I believed it gave us the advantage. 3-2 and 2-1 and 1-0 games are not unusual in our district and our hitters faced 90+ many times. I knew that we would have an advantage after I looked at the schedule that Nova played. Frankly, I believe Nova to be awesome. I just don't believe that they were challenged enough to compete in a tough game. If they go on to win the state, they can look back to that game as a wake up call. There is a ton of good pitching in this county this year. JMO and not meant to disparage anybody.
I believe that Nova is the best coached team in the county, certainly giving them an advantage. But I often wonder if their pitchers had to face pitchers like Kopp, Storey, Ridener, Portice, English on a regular basis where would they fall in the standings. Welcome to Broward County! This has been a topic of conversation around town for years.
Pleasantly surprised to see the coaches let the big dogs loose. Beaucoup smoke emanating from the mound. A rematch would be great, but I suspect Jupiter, Barron Collier, etc. et. al. may disagree.
Great win for st.thomas! Nova does this year after year. They play nobody good during the regular season and then lose in the playoffs. If he allows his team to play you it has to be on HIS field, and if you win he never schedules you again. Just my 2 cents.
Well as much as I think that St Thomas got out of playing against Springs using a lame excuse they never put it on the schedule, I am glad they won. Only to solidify that when you put Nova up against a tough team, they could be toast! I am not taking anything away from their players, they all are very good and coached well and I know some of them personally. Nova's tournament each year puts them in the weakest bracket so they get to the championship. If you are correct, they won't invite Taravella back next year!
Why would St Thomas try to get out of playing Coral Springs? Maybe your coach messed up. Did that ever occur to you? We have beat some pretty good teams. We are not afraid of Coral Springs. Earlier u said you hoped St Thomas lost and later u say that u are glad they won. Which is it? I am sure u wouldn't like people saying stuff about your son or his team. Our whole team knows who u are.
Raid, I did not say one bad thing about your son. No our coach did not screw up. It was a scheduled game, submitted in the beginning of the year by the AD and approved. Get over it. Your team has beaten some pretty good teams and I am sure that you probably could have beaten us too, however, that is just the way it appears so get over it. I will state what I have said before, Nova and your school, Gibbons,Westminster are very well coached teams, gives you all an advantage. So what about your whole team knowing who I am? I know who you are, you just have some issues you think involve me,not so. I can say whatever I want, and I will state hear and now that I was glad St Thomas won only because THE pitcher did a fine job.
Ugot, Excuse me, did I mention anyone's name? You are accusing me of accusing you of being someone? Actually I could have been speaking about anyone, if you took it as directed to you, whoever you are, that is your problem. Very interesting two new posters in a day! So glad that I bring out the best in everyone!

I still don't know what u mean by "Well as much as I think that St Thomas got out of playing against Springs using a lame excuse they never put it on the schedule". Why would we want to "get out of playing" Coral Springs? What reason would we have to do that?
My name is none of your business. I don't want my name on a website so u don't need to know my name. I asked a simple question. U acused St. Thomas of ducking coral springs. U said it. Simple question. Why would we avoid coral springs? My team is not afraid of coral springs. U need to be careful when u start acusing people, some of them are reading this.
Raid, One more time, did not ask you to put your name on a website..in a PT, please do not act like you do not understand. That's it, end of discussion, will answer your question after the PT.
I understand. U just want to badmouth a program in public and not be held acountable for ur acusations. If u are going to badmouth st.Thomas in public, have the guts to defend ur statement. We have beaten better teams and pitchers than coral springs. U demanding that I identify myself to ask u a question is just ur way of avoiding answering the question. Everyone sees that. I knew that u would not answer. We ain't duckin nobody!
There are 2 reasons I won,t tell u who I am. My coach doesn't want us to go on message boards and I wouldn't tell someone like u who I am so u could badmouth me. Coach was right, there will always be haters. Peace out back to just reading.
Enough of this thread. A. It was a valid question. B. Don't make comments that you are not willing to defend. C. You don't have to answer. D. People don't have to identify themselves to ask questions here. Topic Closed
