Can the catcher stand on the plate waiting for the ball to be thrown to him?

My younger sons team had this happen, our kid made a little contact in order to touch plate because kid was standing on it. Although I believe he should of slid home according to league rules, but the ump didn't call him out.

Look up OBR 2.0 Obstruction.

Bottom line is a catcher has a right to field a thrown ball. So if the ball was heading toward the plate he has the right to stand there and field it.

As long as the ball was on the way sounds like your guy got it right. If not a conference with the coach to get his man off the plate with no play would be in order.

So, even if F8 in deep center field has just thrown the ball towards home in an attempt to make a play, it's okay for the catcher to obstruct?

Nahhh. It's not that simple. The interpretation for years has been that the catcher must be in the immediate act of receiving the ball. If not, the runner has the right to the base line and plate.

In the OP it states that the catcher was "waiting for the ball TO BE THROWN..."
